I was listening to Colin Cowherd this morning and he was discussing Andrew Luck and going through all 32 teams and deciding whether he thought the team, given the opportunity, would draft luck. This is in no way, shape, or form, me saying I think we will get the first pick in the draft or that I think Sanchez is a bum, but hypothetically speaking, if you were the GM of the Jets and had Sanchez already on the books, would you/could you draft Andrew Luck? Another situation I found interesting was with the Arizona Cardinals. If Luck falls into their lap do you/can you draft him even though you just signed Kevin Kolb to a 6 year 65 mil contract.
You can do anything you want, this is America, but you would ruin all of the other positions on the team for years to come by giving up a zillion draft picks. So....no and no.
You didn't say you were talking about us having the number one pick anywhere in that post. In fact you said: If you followed this with, "If we did get the first pick.....", it would have been different.
it was implied that it was a hypothetical scenario. but yeah, i would probably draft luck if i had the #1 pick and trade sanchez.
If we had the #1 pick I would without a doubt pick Luck. We could then flip Sanchez for a first rounder, at worst second rounder. I like Nacho and all but Luck has the talent to be Awl-Wuhld.
If we had the first pick, I'd have to see what the compensation was to trade it away and why we ended up last in the league. If Sanchez was a huge reason we ended up dead last, then I'd take Luck. If Sanchez was getting killed because the o-line sucked and the defense was giving up 35 pts. a game, then I'd trade it away and reload the rest of the team with all the picks we'd get from the trade, and it would be a lot of picks now that there's a rookie cap. Hypothetically, I could draft Luck if we had a failing Sanchez.
I don't think his value would be that high. I think it would be a conditional third that could turn into a second. Max Thats what I think made this debate so interesting. Cowherd went through every single team and diagnosed the situation. If you were the Saints would you do it? The Giants? Jacksonville? Tenessee?
IMO, unless a team offers you the world for him (which a team might), you take him and don't think twice. Luck is the best QB prospect in a long time. Having 2 potentially franchise QBs isn't bad and by trading one we can help us get back some depth. This goes for every team.
If Sanchez was sucking then yes, I would draft Luck but if he showed more signs of improvement and still had that clutch gene then I would trade that pick for a kings ransom and re stack the team with youth and also use a 1st rounder I would get to draft Jeffery or Blackmon.
If the Jets got the number one there would be a team willing to trade a kings ransom for the rights to Luck on the rookie wage scale. I would trade out for no less than 3 picks.
Even if Luck turned into the next Peyton Manning and Sanchez lets say the next Jake Plummer? ......Just stirring the pot
Now you are getting into unfair hypotheticals. No one, even in the real scenario, knows the answer to that because it won't happen until years later. Hindsight is 20/20, so it's easy to take Aaron Rodgers at 1 overall instead of Alex Smith 5 years later. I take the picks. Keep Sanchez.
I love Sanchez, and I may be biased, but I take Luck in a heartbeat. This, however, shouldn't be representative of the attitude of the greater fan base.
The Jet's aren't even going to be in a position to draft Luck and aren't going to trade up for him, it's a moot point. Luck could be the next great QB, but there is no guarantee. Nacho is our QB, take it or leave it. IMO, it'a waste of bandwidth talking about it.
