Yeah we need a guy who can stretch the field, but IMO, we need height moreso... If we get another 5'11" WR, idk how well that would work with all 3 starting WR's being under 6 foot. I really think we need a guy with height (6'3"+) and someone who can stretch the field (sub 4.5 40 yard dash). That pretty much describes Braylon. And yes thats hard to find, but I would give up a 2nd for someone that fits that mold, combine that with good depth at the WR position in the draft this year. But if Schotty isnt gone, speed means shit with his dink and dunk shit.
Pace and Scott are both 31 or about to be. One of them needs to get replaced in the next season or two or we'll risk having them both go at the same time like Lewis and Jones and degrade the defense in the process. My money is on replacing Pace fairly quickly because Ryan won't let go of Scott until he has no other choice. Pouha is 32 and that likely means in the next couple of seasons, although the Jets might get lucky and have him stay healthy as he ages. Losing a step is less important for a run-stopper on the line in a 3-4 because their job is basically to stand in place and not get moved while the ILB's make plays around them. Westerman might be an answer at ROLB but Thomas is now 32 and recently injured which is a career threatening development for somebody who hits on every play. Regardless of Thomas status the Jets really need to upgrade the position anyway until they find their 12 sack guy there. You cannot run a good 3-4 over any extended period of time without having a pass rushing ROLB. Smoke and mirrors works for awhile but eventually the blitzing catches up to you. Both the safeties are replaceable although Leonhard is serviceable as a player and has great heart. In my opinion he won the Dallas game when he pushed Witten out of bounds at the 3 on the long play. Without his hustle and speed the Cowboys go up 31-17 and it is all over. Romo fumbled two plays later and the Jets wound up winning the game. It's the little things, and sometimes safeties, that win games in the NFL. So on defense it is FS, LOLB, NT, ROLB, SS in roughly that order with the hope that Westerman might be the ROLB. On offense RT must be replaced and fairly soon after that RG because Brandon Moore is getting a bit long in the tooth. LG might be held down by Slauson as he gets more experience but he looks like replacement level material right now. The WR surplus is going to go away fast because both Plaxico and Mason are short-term solutions at best. The RB's are ok if McKnight is an RB and probably not if not. The Jets have a LOT of needs that need to be addressed in the short-term and if they don't address them the needs will address the Jets in ways that will make us sick.
This is where you pray that Kenrick Ellis can step in and be a replacement that can not only handle the run but disrupt pocket protection on 3rd down. It'll make Pouha last longer going into his final 3 years. Agreed. This next draft/FA period has to address plenty, because if it doesn't happen this team will stay 8-8/9-7 until it hits a 5-11 year and then the shit really starts to hit the fan.
I think the dink and dunk is more of a product of a poor o-line, an inconsistent and still developing QB, and the limitations Rex puts on the offense by wanting to ground and pound. Our conservative offense is a collective problem and not just Schotty. I used to defend him, and although the situation has never been great for him here, he hasn't adjusted well enough to his talent (although he's definitely tried). I wouldn't care if he stays or is gone.
What about Kenrick Ellis? The Jets addressed NT in the draft this past year. Don't need to do it again. If they want to draft another one for depth, fine, but that's not our biggest need. QB: Set for this year's draft. We do need a better veteran backup. If Sanchez hasn't improved by next season, then we can re-evaluate then, but can't imagine drafting competition this coming year barring serious injury or regression. RB: Hopefully set. Last 3 drafts, we've spent a 2nd, 2 4th rounders, and a 5th rounder on RBs. None are producing that great now, but McKnight and Powell haven't gotten chances. The Conner pick doesn't look great, mostly because drafting FBs is stupid. This is another spot to re-evaluate after next year, after seeing what Greene, McKnight, and Powell can do. WR: NEED. Holmes can be the 1, and Kerley can be a slot guy, but we sorely need a deep threat like Braylon was. No one on this team can stretch the field, and Plax and Mason are old and FAs. TE: NEED. Keller is fine as the 1. I don't love him, and drafting a 6'2 TE in round 1 was a bad decision, but he's fine. We badly need another TE across from him who can block and catch passes in the redzone. OT: NEED at RT. I'm not giving up on Ducasse entirely, but we can't go in thinking of him as the answer. Hunter isn't that good. We're set at LT obviously with Brick. OG: NEED. Slauson isn't that good, but we can live with him, and he's still young. Moore is good, but he's slipped a little this year, and he's getting up there a bit. C: Set assuming coaching staff still likes Baxter and/or Turner comes back from injury the same guy. DE: Mostly set. Devito and Wilkerson at DE should be fine. Pitoitua and Dixon aren't bad backups. If we could get a stud here, that would be great, hopefully Wilkerson becomes that, but for the most part, we're fine. NT: Mostly set. Pouha is getting up there, but he was drafted at age 26 due to a Mormon mission, so he's got less wear and tear than most 31-year olds. Ellis was drafted this year, too soon to give up on him, and hard to keep 3 pure NTs. OLB: NEED. Pace and Thomas are getting up there in age, and Thomas has this achilles injury. I don't think Westerman or Maybin is the long-term answer. We need a speed guy who has more balance than Maybin. If we can get a stud 3-4 OLB pass rusher in the mold of Merriman/Ware/Miller, that's our #1 goal. MLB: Could use a depth guy. Harris and Scott are entrenched as starters, but Scott is getting a little older. Can't see us getting rid of him any time soon, but our depth is questionable behind them. CB: Set. Between Revis, Cromartie, and Wilson, we have invested way too much in CB that getting more would be ridiculous. Maybe a dime back, but that's a late pick or a FA. S: NEED. Both Leonhard and Smith are limited. Leonhard is a good leader and I'm fine with him starting, but Smith is getting exposed. We need a rangy safety who can make plays for us, just like we've wanted for years and we hoped Kerry Rhodes would be. Safeties are tricky in the draft though, we don't necessarily need to spend a #1 here. To recap: OLB, S, OL, WR, TE are our top 5 needs.
Dustin Keller is a free agent I believe after next season, what kind of money is he going to command ? I mean I cant see him asking for big $$$, but at the same time he has the potential to be an Elite TE if he stepped in on the right team (ie SD where Gates might be effed up long term). If Keller is doubtful to be resigned due to asking for too much $, then drafting a 1st round TE who can block and catch could be a solid idea. Hell I might be a fan of that either way. If we could run legit 2 TE formations that could do wonders for the identity of this team
I wouldnt be against getting a TE somewhat high in the draft, but i would NOT use our 1st round pick, I mean NE got gronk in t he 2nd round. At this rate we a looking at the teens and could have a shot a good passrusher. Id say that is way more important, along with WR and Safety
IMHO, needs to be addressed in the offseason/draft. OLB is the top of the list, someone who can rush and rush hard. Need a deep threat receiver to stretch the field. need offensive line depth. saftey, and another OLB.
Well, the year we got Sanchez, Cimini was saying the Jets liked Harvin, Freeman, or Pettigrew if we stayed. Pettigrew would be perfect for the Jets. We need a big blocking tight end who is good enough to use his size to make plays in the short passing game to help move the chains. Keller simply isn't that big. A guy like Pettigrew/Gronkowski would be more valuable to the Jets than most WRs because Rex still wants to ground and pound. Having a TE like that would be so helpful to this offense.
Mark Sanchez is not showing us his best side at the moment but he is a lot better than just about anybody we could reasonably get to replace him. When he's on his game he's exactly the QB that Rex Ryan needs to make things work in his formula for winning. The key right now is finding a way to get Sanchez to be consistently at his best. That involves doing very counter-intuitive things, like maintaining a good offensive line in front of him and giving him continuity with his receivers. It involves calling plays that he is suited to execute well on a consistent basis. It involves normal QB development and support, a concept that the Jets only loosely adhere to these days. You could bring Andrew Luck in here next year and if he had the situation that Sanchez has to deal with every week he'd get run out of town in three years flat.
Jets squad as it stands is dangerously thin at the central positions as a whole. On defense, that would mean Jets do not have a quality starter at FS to start. After that, a capable bodies to rotate on safety spot are in order. Then on the second level, both OLBs are that gaping hole. I would like to think that Maybin and Westerman both need to stay on the roster, so LBs can rotate throughout the game. After that, I would like to believe that Jets are set at DL, but we don't know how Ellis and Wilk will pan out. On offense, immediate starter is necessary at RT, and Moore's replacement should be drafted as well. (And just say FUCK NO to any more project drafts. Draft itself is a lottery all right - do we need to add uncertainty factor to an already uncertain lottery that is draft?) If Slauson does not improve to a starting quality, LG is also a need. (At least Jets OL will have nice depth to go with.) Turner and Baxter should stay on the roster, I would like to believe. --------------------------------------------------------------------- After the central positions are addressed: I think Jets are set at CB. No worry there. Also, Jets are set at TE position, but they could improve if they can find a big TE that can block AND catch. Lastly, on WR, Jets should either draft a quality top target wide out in the mold of Calvin Johnson, or bring Braylon Edwards back. --------------------------------------------------------------------- After all that's been said and done, fire Schottenheimer, and bring in REAL offensive coordinator that will not be offensive to watch.
BR4-Sanchez IMHO is what you call a system QB-not someone that is going to lead a team by himself. His comp. % is low and he is not even on the level of Pennington who was very accurate! Lets be real the Jets live and die with their defense and right now the defense hasn't found their identity. I believe Rex Ryan is a good coach and I actually like how he challenges the powers to be-but he's the kind of coach that only works if the team is winning. If the ship starts to sink all hell will break lose. If you lose to the Dolphins and Bills you will witness this firsthand. I thought it was a mistake to get rid of T Jones. Gritty hard nosed Vet that makes everyone around him accountable. I thought the Jets were a great fit for him-big loss.Sanchez is best on the run a pocket passer he is not esp. with pressure around him.And also very inconsistent>
Sanchez is a system QB who can break out of the system and lead 3 and 4 play drives to score a TD in under 2 minutes when the Jets will lose otherwise. That's a big difference from the usual system QB's. His lifetime completion percentage in the playoffs is 60.4% and his rating is 93+. He's thrown 9 TD passes and just 3 Int's in the postseason. Writing him off as a system QB is a mistake because he's only a system QB until crunch time and then he becomes something much more than that.
i see the future draft needs as exactly what you claim we are set at and that's the oline and receiver then safety. slausson is a jag, at least can be easily improved upon. hunter is a jag and moore is old. ground and pound doesn't work unless you have the line for it. past playoff vicories have come because of the ground and pound. opponents had to respect the run to the point that it helped sanchez be effective when we needed him in the playoffs. without ground and pound sanchez lose's his edge and becomes a handicap!
