what I see when I watch the pats, which I admittedly avoid whenever possible, is welker getting a free release out of the slot with the corner playing 5-8 yards off of him. then Welker uses his speed and route running ability to get the necessary separation required and makes a catch 5-10 yards down field, then makes a single man miss and picks up another 5-10 YAC. Sure Welker sees guys play on top of him, but for the most part the corners seem to play off him and that gives him all the space he needs to catch his 5-7 yard routes he is famous for.
This is exactly what I should have mentioned earlier, when I said "the Jets have physically abused Welker.". It was specifically Smith, whom has given Welker at least 3 bigtime shots in the last 3 games. 2 of which, I think, took Welker out of the game.........
He has scored in two of the last 3 games he faced us. Didn't have his usual 100+ yard games but still scored.
Unless you are able to specifically jam him on the line (which he generally shrugs off), contact inside of 5 yards is largely ineffective. Ask the Dolphins if you don't believe me. That 99 yard TD he had came with a corner (granted, it was Jimmy Wilson) 2 yards off the line, who managed to get contact right at 4 or 5 yards.
kyle broke up i know 1 play against gronkowski last year(at home week 2), and i think another that same game against him. its odd(because of the obvious physical mismatch with height) but he looked pretty good. his entire game looks alot better. i like how, if he allows a completion the receiver goes absolutely nowhere after the catch. kyle is there like a magnet. next step for him is to make plays on the ball.
bump and run Football 101 You cant press a slot and outside receiver. If they ran an "in & out" route both defensive backs would collide with each other...Then you guys would be calling them stupid.... Hence the reason only one is usually pressed...never both....
I can see all of that happening, actually. When we beat the Chargers in the playoffs, Rex had put Revis on Gates a couple of times with a ton of real estate at his back. Revis was mainly effective because he's got the strength that a lot of linebackers have. I wouldn't want to see him covering Gronk more than once or twice, but as a shake-up to Belichick's gameplan it could work I think. Probably more likely to see Revis on Hernandez if he's anything close to healthy enough for this game.
The big question is whether the Jets can get pressure on Brady without blitzing like they did last year in the playoffs. That will afford them the opportunity to play lots of zone.
you were implying Wilson is Caucasian, and basing his skin color on how well he plays....what's so funny about that?
The Pats hide Welker so well that it'll be tough to get Revis matched up on him. The Pats motion him and line him up behind other receivers. Revis is a beast when he can get his hands on the receiver at the line and "herd" him where he wants him to go. The zone worked so well last year because the jets don't fear any of the other outside receivers and taking the middle away and being physical with Welker trying to run crosse. It also takes space away from Gronk and Hernandez, who may or may not play.
That's not even close to what I was implying. But, thanks for playing. Explaining a joke that has gone on throughout the forum from Eric Smith to others isn't nearly as funny when it has to be explained. Anyway, I've also defended the guy at every turn.
actually, it was the inside zones that afforded them the opportunity to get sacks for the most part, brady had plenty of time to pass in the playoff game ... he just couldnt find anyone
