To all of the naysayers, and there are many. I really think that I will be in a position to say to you sooner rather than later, "I told you so." All of the reports being generated thus far, coupled with buzz from the HC, are raving about this guy. From the hands to the route running, deceptive speed to the fact that one tackle doesn't normally bring him down, he's got all of the tools. It's just that the previous admin and dipsh..t HC never had the balls to actually show this guy some meaningful playing time. Who knows, by the end of TC and into the pre-season he might even land himself in the #2 spot... "Told ya so."
I hope I can say the same thing about Houston. These guys haven't been given a chance in the past. They have the right tools, and there is no reason to believe they don't have the "right stuff."
If things continue to go bad for mccariens and good for cotchery, it most likely will happen. Lets face it in terms of first impressions, Mangini likes Cotchery more than justin.
i think a lot of people get caught up with speed in evaluating the wide reciever position. yes, speed is important, and you can't "teach it", but jerihico has the makings of a good possesion reciever. somebody who'll go over the middle and get the 12-15 yard receptions in 3rd and long situtions. i hope he does land the number 2 spot, mainly because i think justin mccariens is a bum, and somebody needs to light a fire under his ass (but i still think hes useless). but let's not get too caught up in the hype, afterall its only TC...
He was the 4th WR under HERM....how the hell do you naysayers go off complaining that herm never gets his younger guys involved, yet still will not believe that Cotchery can and will break through....you can not have it both ways....He is the perfect type of wr for mangini, as he is a very intelligent player.....if he stays healthy he should and will (imo) be a starter week 1 and on
Bradway always said Cotcherry would make a good #3 receiver, but never even gave any indication he could be a starter one day. Mangini on the other hand likes smart, tough players who work hard. He's giving the guy - like everyone, a chance to prove himself. Let's see how it works out...
i hope cotch proves me wrong i want the guy to shine.but he got alot of hypoe here and he really hasnt done much.
If Cotch does turn out to be something special, I think we might have a more poteint WR corp than most thought. IMO McCareins would be a great #3 (but not at the price we are paying) option (had a great year as a slot WR in his last year with the Titans).
I dont think looking good in TC and being the hardest worker in this offseason is considered hype. We've seen Cotchery have some great plays when he was thrown to. Its not like this game has never been on the field before. This guy still has to prove things, but I think he will a great role in this offense.
I really like Cotchery so I am freakin' psyched he is going to get an opportunity this year. He will take over McCareins' spot for sure
http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/115432404985090.xml&coll=1 Cotchery receives uncommon praise from coach Monday, July 31, 2006 BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets coach Eric Mangini throws around individual player compliments like manhole covers. His mantra is team first, team second, team forever. But when the subject matter turned to third-year wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, Mangini couldn't contain himself. "He was (voted) the most outstanding player in our off-season program," Mangini began. "That caught my eye. His work ethic and the fact that he distinguished himself in that way, I think is outstanding. "After seeing Jerricho develop from the other side of the ball, I'm happy to be here working with him. I think he has great potential." Cotchery, a fourth-round pick from N.C. State, was a favorite of former coach Herman Edwards, who always promised to get him the ball, although it rarely worked out. Last season, Cotchery had 18 catches for 206 yards and no touchdowns. He also returned 23 punts for 182 yards and no touchdowns. But with Mangini having declared an open competition at all positions, Cotchery could have a breakout year this season. He's battling Laveranues Coles, Justin McCareins and veteran Tim Dwight for playing time. LB Victor Hobson, who pancaked WR Phil Silva in a one-on-one tackling drill, said the new drill has been a big hit among the players. "It's realistic," Hobson said. "I don't know how many times you get caught in the open field. You don't want to be the one on the highlight film diving and the guy is running past you for a touchdown. It (the drill) gets you ready." The Jets got a big scare when backup NT Sione Pouha injured his right knee in a pileup. He was helped off the field but later returned briefly.... S Erik Coleman (illness) and rookie TE Jason Pociask (shoulder) didn't practice. Although the Jets' QB rotation came full circle with Chad Pennington working with the first team in the afternoon, Mangini said the rotation will continue for "a little while."... QB Patrick Ramsey had another solid day of practice. RBs Derrick Blaylock, Cedric Houston and Leon Washington have been impressive in the absence of Curtis Martin.... The Jets, who had two 2 1/2-hour practices, had their first practice in shells (helmet, pads and shorts) yesterday afternoon.... S Kerry Rhodes had his third interception in three days....S Rashad Washington dropped an interception.... Former Jets WR Wayne Chrebet is opening a restaurant/louge across the street from Hofstra. I think he will make one hell of a third wr.
...one thing that I really like about the CS so far, is that any player, regardless of draft position or anything else, will be given a fair evaluation like never before. Maybe when this season is over we'll know pretty much if JC can be an effective player for the Jets. I don't believe the same could be said about the previous regime. We'd still be on here hoping that he'll develop into a solid contributer, all the while never knowing for sure...
Cotch is a stud. If Birdbrain Bradway hadn't inked Chrebet thru the end of 2008 and "clock management" Edwards had a clue Cotch would have played a lot the last 2 years. Wayne did little the last 3 years except draw money out of the jets and their Birdbrain GM who thought Martin, Chrebet, and Mawae would play forever . Another year or two of Bradway and we would have lost Cotch who would leave like Jordan, tired of sitting on the bench behind one of greybeards.
