I think Mangini is making a huge mistake with this 4 man QB rotation. Whatever QB wins this battle will take the field in September without having the necessary reps and they all need it.

Pennington needs to knock off the rust and build up his arm strength. He hasn't played regularly in almost 2 years

Ramsey has started only a handful of games in his career and is working with players he doesn't know

Clemmons is a rookie and has so much to learn and quickly if he is going to start this year.

Bollinger - well Bollinger is just not a starting NFL QB anyway.

And all four need to learn an entirely new offense with a new OC.

Under these circumstances, it makes no sense to give each 1/4 of the reps and expect any of them to be ready come September.

What Mangini should do, IMO, is the following. Clemmons should not start this year under any circumstances. The OL is new and needs to learn and gel. Few rookie QBs react well to starting immediately, and some who have done so for bad teams have never recovered. I'm not saying he isn't good or that I don't like him, but I am saying the situation is not right for a rookie starter with this Jet team. Give him a clipboard and let him learn for a year and let's hope he is the QB of the future. Bollinger is just not a starter. He should clearly be #4 of the 4 unless it is crystal clear that Pennington can't cut it physically. Until then, Bollinger should spend most of practice watching.

Mangini should split the reps between Pennington and Ramsey and let the best man win. And he should decide between the two as early as possible - by the third preseason game at the latest.

Any other strategy will significantly hinder the development of whichever QB ends up as the starting QB.

He's waiting for someone to seperate themselves from the pack. I'm sure he's got a deadline in place for designating someone starter if no one stands out. It's early yet, give him a minute.

Your points are well taken, but I for one do not think the 4 man rotation is going to last too long. They are putting in an entirely new offense, as you mentioned, so it is ok for 4 QB's to get reps right now, to me, because they are running the whole playbook, and putting in the new offense; I am sure there are plays in there that Pennington would run, that Ramsey won't, and vice versa, so they are running everything. Actually more important for the O-Line to me in this early stage, getting blocking assignments down, and O-Line calls. By next week, I think you will see it be between Penny and Ramsey, but they are covering bases with Pennington's injury history. Once he shows he is healthy (God willing), I feel it will be a traditional two man race. It also sends a message to the whole team; every job is open, even QB...No one's job is a given... You are going to have to play well to get the job.

Bollinger will be removed from the rotation any day now.

As for the others, Mangini will have to make up his mind in the next couple of weeks. The starter needs the time with the rest of the offensive starters.

    I agree 100%.

At the very least, I'd cut back on Bollinger's reps. Probably Clemens too.

This is really a 2 man race with Clemens having a really outside shot. It would be good for Chad and Ramsey to treat it like it is.

I agree too, but I will say, don't you think Mangini has a plan? If we know one thing so far about this new regime, they are ridiculously clandestine, play everything INSIDE the vest, and give up little to nothing of what they plan to do. (I LOVE this btw). Think they showed this right off the bat with the way they handled the draft. I think there is definitely a plan in place for QB, and it is contingent on Chad's health and ability (if at all) to come back from this latest injury. I personnaly feel Mangini would like Chad to win the job, because Penny, when healthy (those all too rare times), has been a very "Parcells/Bellicheck" type QB... high percentage, good decisions, protect the football, let the defense win games.
I mean, we don't even really know anything about the offense we are going to run! That is how guarded this regime has been. Seriously, I have seen interviews with Lil' Schott, Mangini, etc... NO IDEA what this offense will look like.

Could not really disagree more. Mangini keeps saying that it is an open race and I have no reason to disbelieve him. If he tells you somrhing it is likley true. I actually think that Clemens is the favorite right now. I am not in the rookies should never play first year camp thing at all- I guarantee if you did the research the success failure rate of QBs is the same whether they start or not. Barring a collapse, Clemens will start. Resiging Ramsey was not a vote of confidence for him, it was a clear indication that CHad will never be back and they will need a 3rd QB next yea after Oenny is gone. Bollinger is the most hated Jet for some reason, but he is alegimitate mid-lower tier STARTING QB and will likely wind up as the #2 this year and next.

I see Bollinger as the odd man out.Id like to see him traded for at least a draft pick instead of just being released.Maybe K.C needs a backup?

I htought I read the same thing in the paper today. I guess we have to wait and see how long the 4-man rotation continues. I agree with the guys saying it will be cut to 3 very soon. Mangini was quoted that hes waiting for someone to stand out before he declares a favorite but I think he'll declare a "no shot at starting" guy fairly quickly. Of course that guy will be bolly.

I Friday was any indication, it might be less of a problem than one might think. Mangini ran two 2 1/2 hour practices on Friday. In the morning session, he ran 11 on 11 for almost 50 minutes, as opposed to the half hour sessions Herm ran. I didn't go to the evening practice, but I read it ran 2 and a 1/2 hours as well. So, there are quite a few more reps to be had now as opposed to last year. I think the rotation will stay in place until after the first preseason game. I also think Mangini will carry 4 QB's.

Clemens isn't going anywhere, and Pennington can't be cut in any case for cap reasons. Pennington's health will remain a risk factor all year. Ramsey could blow up.... I just don't trust him. So then, Bollinger. I think the long term plan is to keep Bollinger as the #3 QB. He's cheap, he's durable and the coaches must have seen something they like in him, or why would he be in the rotation?

I think Mangini is less worried about the reps, he's more concerned with setting up his way of doing things. He wants these guys to compete under pressure. Take Rhodes for instance, only in his second year, and in another new scheme, and the plan is for both Coleman and Rhodes to play some CB, at least in camp. Why take them away from getting their reps in at the safety spots?

After the first preseason game, I think it will boil down to Penny and Ramsey. There is plenty of time to let them battle it out in the meantime. Besides, herm made sure all the QB's got reps too, last year. The difference is that all of them are getting equal time with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team players, instead of letting one guy get all the reps with the starters. I think it will work itself out in plenty of time.

I see the 4-man rotation as being a part of the entire decision making process. There are plenty of players trying out for a roster spot at most other positions as well (everybody but the kickers are competing for a spot, I like it!) QB is no exception. I don't see any complaints about 5 other DEs getting the same reps as Ellis, for an example.

And I still wouldn't bet against Clemens being a starter soon. I've read about every other QB here throwing ints in practice, I don't remember seeing anything about Clemens making a bad throw yet. I finds that quite remarkable, and exciting. I believe we have a coach who isn't afraid to take chances and be innovative and unconventional...so why not? We were 4-12: its not that unusual for teams with a record that bad to start a rookie at QB the next season (ex: Peyton Manning)

I agree--I wouls not bet on Chad and Martin getting their guarenteed start/playing time they had under Herm (gotta play 'em cause we're paying them thru the nose) Edwards.

I agree with your assessment with one exception. I think Bollinger is a legitimate contender for the starting job. Pennington should be put on the IR and give a totally year to recover. He is a warrior and gave his body (arm) for the team. Ramsey and Bollinger should go head to head for the starting job. IMO Bollinger is a more mobile QB and with a new line I think his mobility is an important factor. :jets:

Just like the McCareins PUP move, the open competition at QB is symbolic more than anything. To keep appearences up, Mangini has to say the QB position is as open as every other position. To do otherwise would be hypocritical and undermine trust in his authority. It also says no position/player is more important than any other.

While I like Brooks, there's no way he's going to win the position. I think they'd rather let Clemens learn before they put him in and also ensure that the protection is sound before putting their QB of the future behind the C. So like others are suggesting, it's down to Penny and Ramsey. And only time will tell who wins there. But we should know more in a week, and I think that's enough time to build continuity on O.

If I were a betting man, I'd say Ramsey wins this thing.

I highly doubt we'd be luckly enough to find a team among the 31 who want a 3rd string qb for a pick

agreed, with one exception- noodle should be cut immediately. you could get more for bolly in a trade than noodle, simply cause he's not injured and has a much lower cap cost.

I don't know much about Penny's contract, but was that even an option? I sorta remember reading on here that it would've been more of a pain to cut him than actually keep him. Besides, didn't he even take a pay cut over the offseason anyway?
