This is from the Jets website so you can take this how you want. Here he is getting high praise from Jim McNally the O-Line consultant: Discuss O-Line Consultant McNally talking up Hunter. Edited: Hunter is arguably the biggest question mark on the line. I saw this video and figured it would be a good topic to discuss as losing Woody worried a bunch of people.
Wayne Hunter played pretty decent when Woody was out, working with the best offensive line staff in the league today, I think Hunter will be more than adequate, he's already pretty good when it comes to run blocking, I hope he steps it up just a little bit more in the pass-protection department btw Jason Peters top 10 RT? Errr ...
He is a left tackle and is over rated in my opinion. The NFC doesn't have the caliber of Lt's that the AFC does, not even close. He will be a perennial Pro-Bowler there, where I think at the very least there are 4 LT's better in the AFC, maybe more.
not sure why anyone is worried.hunter played well in the playoffs against good teams.i am hoping vlad looks good at guard because i have a feeling we are set at rt for the next 3 years
Watched that video earlier today and was interested that Coach McNally was making the comparison to a player he has coached and thinks is amongst the top tackles. Points I liked about Hunter - very coachable, great feet with strength and size. Wayne did really well stepping in for Damien and as has been said his run blocking is more than adequate. We run a lot to the right especially for some of the bigger gains so a plus
At this point I would be surprised if Wayne Hunter played poorly. I would expect that he does a better job in pass protection, but I would be equally surprised if he could match Woody's dominance in the running game. The ground and pound offense takes a step back this year IMO.
The coaches made a point last year that Hunter struggled a bit when he had to come into games to replace Woody mid-game, but that when he had a full week of practice and prepared to play the whole game, he did great. I think that is totally true. Now with a whole offseason to prepare, plus going into every game getting 1st team reps, he will be more than fine.
After clicking the link to watch the video and getting yelled at by Fireman Ed to download his Jets Chant app... ...I watched McNally's comments on the Hunt. He's was high on Ducasse too. So take it for what it's worth. Hunter is so tall he looks thin. Sort of like D'Brickashaw.
I think he's adequate, however I don't think he gives you anything extra. With his age and athletic skill set, he's not a long term solution in my opinion.
He's definitely better than Slauson...I don't know what theyre doing with Slauson still starting at guard.
I think he will do fine, btw who do you think has the biggest offensive line in the nfl, because the jets have some big boys on that line
What's happening with Vlad Ducasse. He couldn't beat out Slauson at G and Hunter at RT. So far you are 0-3 on your top 3 picks in the 2010 draft. Wilson had 2 demotions over the course of the season, and Ducasse and McNight weren't activated until the last game. How are those guys looking this camp. Looks like your best pick in that draft was the FB
not quite... Mcknight was active the last half of the season, where he played exceptionally well on ST. Ducasse was a project pick, I personally hate project picks, but if you have the time to develop them properly, they can turn out to be valuable commodities. Ducasse was never really going to be a starter last year, he was too raw trying to make a transition from UMass to the NFL, while switching from T to G. Wilson played better at the end of the season and into the playoffs. But he, like all other first year players in the NFL, didnt get an offseason of work with the coaches to show how they improved. So the Jets decided it was better to bring back Cro than to risk the fact that he might not be ready. but yeah, Conner is going to knock the heads of some LB's this year.
Ducasse is a project. Slauson had the fast-track to that LG position since he was drafted. He came from Callahan's system at Nebraska to Callahan's system with the Jets. Ducasse never had a chance of beating him out there. With the limited reps/opportunities Ducasse got because of the lockout, giving him another developmental year is the right move. He'll take over Hunter's old position in the Big TE set and grow from there. McKnight was active a for much of the latter half of the season as a spe ial teams player and was a solid contributor which is right on par with what you would expect from a 4th round pick. By all reports he has rededicated himself and is acting as a leader on the ST squad. He'll contribute on offense this year. Yea, Wilson struggled but now he's taking all of his lessons from Revis. Last season was his first time ever as a nickel and it showed. He still managed to keep pace and body position on his WRs, he just had problems locating the ball; a typical rookie issue. He did a great job against Steve Johnson in the final game against Buffalo and he's been working with Revis all offseason. That doesn't guarantee anything but given that he already had the right aggression and physicality coming into the league for Rex's defense and is now learning from the best CB to ever play in Rex's defense, I think he'll be alright.
While Hunter did a fine job last year as a late season replacement for Woody, his performance then is no real assurance that he will be able to perform at that level or better while holding up over the course of a full season. He very well may be able to do so but then again, he might not. The CS obviously thinks he will so I suppose that makes it more likely than not that he will be able to do the job to everyone's satisfaction. I sure as hell hope so.
