Why the Jets cap space is limited: Restructures were cancelled.

I am happy for the contracts to stay as they are unless these guys are agreeing to actually pay cuts - if we can get through this off season without creating too many more problems down the line then that's great.

According to reports today from camp, LT, Scott, and Pace are all not practicing.. apparently if you restructured your contract you can't practice until Thursday and none of those 3 have an injury to keep them out of practice.

 

I'm not sure on this. LT's paycut has been reported in detail over the weekend and it seems Scott, LT and Pace are not participating at camp yet, possibly due to their modified contracts and CBA rules.

 

You must be mistaken. Jason from TheJetsBlog.com said that they didn't restructure.

 

Smart move, if they re-structured Sanchez's contract, he would not be able to practice until the 4th. It will probably happen, along with Harris's long tern deal later in the week when the restrictions are lifted.

 

Yes, harris and Sanchez will probably be restructured after the 4th. Although I can't see how the Jets are under the cap with Sanchez current cap number of 17-18 million and Harris around 11. Maybe both Harris long term contract and sanchez conversion of salary to bonus will be announced right before August 4th? The two transactions will create a minimum of $10 million in cap room for 2011.

 

I saw a quote from Bart Scott where he said he was willing to restructure, but was *not* taking a pay-cut.

LaDainian Tomlinson’s role is expected to decrease this season, and so is his salary.

ESPN.com’s John Clayton reports Tomlinson will “only” get $1.1 million this year, down from $2.625 million.

That is a significant pay cut and it likely means the Jets told Tomlinson he would get released if he didn’t take the deal. The Jets were lightly rumored through NFL Network to be interested in Ronnie Brown, which may have created additional leverage for the team.

In one sense, the news is surprising because Tomlinson exceeded all reasonable expectations in 2010. On the other hand, the Jets like Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight, while Tomlinson struggled down the stretch last year.

A pay cut like this makes us wonder if Tomlinson is even guaranteed to make the roster.

 

Scott, and Pace aren't practicing and the writers are waiting confirmation on their restructured deals.

 

Sanchez's contract should NOT be restructured.

If we restructured Scott and Pace's deals, we're going to need to pay the full $17+ million on Mark's this year. Next year would be a great time to restructure/extend his contract to free up some cash. If BS and CP's were indeed still restructured, we just lost the two best cap-saving restructures for next season.

 

Harris wouldn't be a restructure, it would be a fresh contract. Forget 2011. We need to push as much cash into this year's cap as possible now that we've addressed our biggest issues. Our prospects for a pass rush are pretty sad at this point, but I could see us going after Roth or Lawson with Harris's money.

I don't know that it'll take to the 4th to sign Harris. Tanny had indicated he'd take care of it after the weekend. We'll see. Either way, we have to be under the cap by Thursday.

 

I think prior to signing Cro we were about $7.5 million under.

Do you think we used any of the Vet money to work Cro in?

 

I don't know. I had assumed we were planning to use the money on Ellis, but now I'm not so sure. The next few days will be interesting. Like I said in another thread, I'm guessing they'll hold off on signing anyone else until Harris gets his contract. The salary cap deadline is only 3 days away now, and it's not as though we have remaining time sensitive FAs.

I had heard something about Lawson not getting looked at until teams were able to work him out (Thursday or later), but now I can't find that.

If the Jets are under the cap as is, they should probably not restructure all the deals and maximize the cap hit this year, unless they plan on another big splash, which I doubt. Take the hit now and free up room for next offseason.

 

Right, I'm just saying Harris cap number will change with a new contract. But if they wait until closer to the 4th to make it official he can practice.

I'm finding it tough to believe that they can fit Holmes, Cromartie, Braylon, Hunter and Eric Smith under the cap with Sanchez having around an $18 million cap number and Harris around 11. I would love it if they didn't have to convert sanchez salary into bonus but it's hard to believe. I can't imagine Pace and Scott restructuring created much cap room.

In order to get under the cap I think Sanchez restructure and Harris new contract will probably have to be done by the 4th but I hope I'm wrong.

 

It seems pretty tough to stay under the cap without restructuring Sanchez, but if we still are under the cap, not restructuring Sanchez is ideal. Best to take the $17mil hit this year than to spread most of it over the next few years. His hit next year is around $8mil I believe so you instantly have that $9mil drop from one players salary. I find it unrealistic that we didn't restructure him, didn't extend Harris, still managed to bring back Santonio and cro while signing Plax, and still managed to stay under the cap. If Sanchez hasn't restructured, Tanny just told the world he is the salary cap god and that naysayers can suck his pipe.
