If we lose Cromartie, Rex will definitely try to bring in another CB. His system relies heavily on coverage and he needs more than 2 effective CBs to run his system. Also, we need another capable guy in case of injury. I would hate to see Wilson and Lowery/Coleman as starters if Revis hurts his hammy again.
The jets fo should go all out for nmandi it would solve our pass rush at the same time as i could see alot of coverge sacks or rex just saying go get'em boys
Having Revis and Nnamdi both under contract along with Wilson would be a tough challenge, especially with all of our own /fa to worry about
I'm not sure Carlos Rogers is going to be that much cheaper than Cro. I kind of dig Darren Sharper for the Jets. He's an older guy looking for a ring and playing time so he could be a nice fit.
I wouldn't expect him to be the star of the team, just a Taylor/Pryce kind of player who plays well on the cheap. I'm pretty sure he's looking for playing time and a ring more than money at this point--at least that's what he says in interviews--so he could be a fit.
4. I like Barrett Ruud and Kirk Morrison only out of the LB crop, and they are both ILBs, which Jets don't need. I don't think Jets should reach for OLBs here[/QUOTE] If Ryan thinks he can get more milage out of a FA MLB, he could always move Scott back outside. Scott did play both in Balt and I believe was more effective outside. I also believe that the addition of Wilkerson at NG will free up the LBs to roam more because they don't have to cover Pouhas butt as much. I know a lot of people love SP, but I feel he was a decent backup on his best day. Ryan always had an extra man covering Pouhas area of operation.
Taking Bart out of MLB lineup means Harris is losing his personal body guard. No matter how good either Morrison or Ruud has to be, they are not coming in for that kind of role if they are indeed called up. Bringing either just to send Bart to the OLB spot is a dumb idea. (And I'm being very generous in this assessment too.)
what about tanard jackson...pretty sure he is or will b released by the bucs and has great potential but he is a chore outside of football
I think personaly this is the only way id be ok with letting Holmes get away. Let Holmes and Cromartie walk bring in Plex and Nnamdi. Two big ass recievers with more then enough size and speed/talent and a backfield that will allow alot more pass rushing and Cotchery/Keller for short route raping. This actualy makes me feel warm inside.... Pause
Spot on post. Scott is invaluable to Harris inside. Scott is usually the first in the hole to either take on a lead guard or fullback and is consistently blowing up plays to free up Harris to make the tackle.
DLine: -The Jets spent their first two picks on the DLine with Wilkerson and Ellis so I wouldn't be expecting too much in the way of big names coming in here. -I'd like to see Ellis back for another season in a rotational role. He's had some problems staying healthy recently and the thought of a 34 year old with a lingering knee ailment as a starter scares me. Still he is the longest tenured Jet currently on the roster so he gets sentimental points and he has shown that he can still bring some heat in big games. If he's willing to come back at reduced snaps and a reduced salary then I would love to have him on the roster for one more SB push. -Kelly Gregg seems like someone who would get the Trevor Price treatment form Rex if he ever became available. He knows Rex's offense and is a great run-stuffer but at this point I'm not so sure if there is a spot for him on the roster. Pohua isn't going anywhere and Kenrick Ellis is set to be our NT of the future provided his upcoming July 12 trial doesn't end with a 20 year prison sentence. Martin Tevaseu's roster spot would seem to be Gregg's target and I believe he is still PS eligible but there's also the question of how many NTs Rex wants to keep. Kelly's only role is on the inside where as Tevaseu could probably play DE as well as NT. Then there's also the Howard Green factor. Rex likes carrying a lot of DBs on the roster which tends to force DLinemen off of the team. -Aaron Smith would be a nice addition to the team as he can still wreck havoc against opposing OLines, doesn't do too shabby as a pass-rusher and would bring in some great veteran leadership. However, signing him would revolve around the same questions as Kelly Gregg: money and numbers. DeVito and Wilkerson aren't getting cut for him and Pitouitua - if he can rebound from his ACL tear - is someone I don't see Rex letting go of. Shaun Ellis has health problems that Smith doesn't but he also has two seasons in Rex's defense and would provide the same veteran leadership, if not more since he's already bled with this team. Trevor Pryce was only signed to a one-year deal and is considering retirment but he's a Rex favorite so he should be given consideration until he actually announces his retirment. Jarron Gilbert has been a fan favorite prospect and someone Rex had his eye on since the 2010 draft. Marcus Dixon has been solid but not spectacular in his tenure as a Jet but he has also been Kenrick Ellis' go-to for emotional support/personal advice and given Kenrick's history I don't think it would be wise to make his personal advisor go away. Out of all of these guys to see go, my guess would be Gilbert. I don't think we'll be carrying more than 6 DEs and I would really like to see Shaun Ellis back. -Kris Jenkins should just retire already. He was a great personality in the locker room and he was a beast on the field but his health problems kept him from being a major asset to the team. Two knee injuries and back problem have led me to doubt whether he could stay healthy in a rotational role. OLB: -OLB would be position to make a huge addition for in FA but given the amount of money already tied up in the position the FO would be had-pressed to make it happening shy of a trade or some creative work-arounds in Thomas' and Pace's contracts. -Kiwanuka could be intriguing, provided he passes a physical and sets his price to something in line with the risk of signing him. Kiwi had experience playing standing up with the Giants and was a good pass-rusher. If he can overcome his injuries he could be a reasonably-priced rotational player. -Matt Roth would be interesting as a rotational player if the Jets decide not to bring him back Jason Taylor. He'd be a decent camp player who at the very least could serve as a benchmark for minimal production/improvement for Garrett McIntyre. -As for OLBs in general, the FO should be asking for some money back from Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas regardless of whether or not they plan on targeting another OLB for FA. Pace has been an injury concern and slowed last season and Thomas, despite being a great run-stuffer, just isn't bringing in the pressure in the pass rush as well as he is being paid to. MLB: -Zach made the point regarding Scott perfectly. He means a great deal to Harris' production and he's a strong personality on the team. I wouldn't want to see him part from this defense. -Barrett Ruud is a Tamp-2 MLB, he's not suited to play for this defense. -Nick Barnett is hitting his 30s and is coming off a major knee injury. Keith Brooking is well into his 30s and if I remember correctly had a nice little article written about how he doesn't approve of Rex's coaching style. Whether that was the truth or just jealous ; this defense is not desperate for bodies at MLB, is not wanting for veteran experience/leadership at the position and uses multiple formations where they pull one MLB in favor of a safety in passing downs. Neither Brooking or Barnett are much better options in coverage at this point. Barnett is a question mark coming off of his injury and Brooking has lost a step. The only LB that makes sense for this role would be Barrett Ruud but unless he's willing to play special teams then he's pretty much going to be designated solely for coverage situations which would put his roster value below any other safety we could sign as they would likely be just as good against the run in that role/formation and could also see the field in a safety rotation where as Ruud would be confined to passing downs. -We have enough back-up potential between the normal ST corps and Westerman's ability to play both positions. Although Durant could be serviceable if he can flex to ST coverage as well. Between Harris' tag and Scott's salary I really wouldn't expect too much in the way of interest for a name we'd likely recognize without the help of Google. CB: -Nnamdi next to Revis would be an amazing combination if the Jets decide to let Cro walk. However, given the financial problems that we're likely facing to resign Edwards and Holmes, I doubt we get a shot at Nnamdi unless he takes a HUGE paycut(not going to happen). -Foxworth knows the defense and Rex but falls into the "old and injured" -Carlos Rodgers would be decent as a #2 but honestly I'd rather give Wilson a shot at starting than letting him fill in at nickel for another year after being taken as a #2. -Ike Taylor has been one of the longest tenured CBs on the Steelers' roster which has less to do with Taylor being decent and more to do with him the CB playing opposite Taylor being disappointing/terrible while Taylor maintained a skill level of "slightly better" and getting more familiar with the defense. Now he's old and has to learn a new defense; PASS! -If Cro stays then the FO should be looking to find someone to replace Coleman. He stepped up his coverage to about the role of a nickel/dime player so he is (finally) right where he should be and he has been more than serviceable as a pass-rusher in Rex's scheme along with Digs and Cole. Safety: -If Dawan Landry hits the FA as unrestricted then I say go for him. I consider him an upgrade over Pool and Smith as a starter and if Lowery starts pressing for playing time it would be in a role that would complement Landry. -Darren Sharper is 35, coming off of a major knee injury that kept him out for half the season last year, is seems to be set to resign with the Saints unless another team offers him a starting job. The Jets will not be offering him a starting job. -Brian Dawkins: fuck that guy. -As for the rest, the question is going to come down to how much more/less money they would want over Smith and Pool. If we're looking at guys to be nothing more than rotational players next to Leonhard and a developing FS prospect in Dwight Lowery then we might as well stay in-house for that role.
Is anyone else thinking a very short free agency period might lead to more of our guys from last year staying with the Jets? I hope so.
