    Coach on the Field

By Bassett on May 31, 2011, 10:30 am

    LaDainian Tomlinson

    A quote from Jets West.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is why the lockout needs to end. He's not only ready to hit the next plateau, I think he's going to make a quantum leap in his progress, as much as one can in a ball control offense.

This kid's ready to bring it home.

He needs to improve in his accuracy. I am glad he can see it but he needs to execute better, particularly early in games. I appreciate late game heroics, but more consistent play may reduce the need for comming through in the 4th quarter.

This is obvious and overstated in every Sanchez thread...but what does it have to do with him becoming a true leader/coach on the field?

He is a leader, your starting QB is supposed to be. I would like to see him play his position as well as he can apparently talk about it. The fact that he is a coach on the field means squat if he cannot complete passes, particularly early in games.

His accuracy has been an issue but so was his decision making and ability to read and react in his first few seasons. While his physical tools may or may not be improved, it seems that his grasp of the game and his comfort level as an NFL franchise QB has skyrocketed. This can only be a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Maybe he can't sling it like Peyton but from what we hear and read about Mark, he will work his ass off to be the best he can. Seems like there is never 'good enough' with Sanchez, but instead: 'how do I improve and get these fellas a ring?' A lot of people give him shit for being a top 10 pick on a playoff team with stats that resemble much worse.

We should know and understand as Jet fans that he's quite inexperienced and took over from day 1 without much of a veteran hand-holding process. He went through trial by fire and he sucked at times, but he also showed great intangible skills that bode well for the future. This year is the litmus test. I think he will have a top-10 QB season. Not saying he will be a pro bowl nominee or a fantasy football star, but I expect a good, solid season from #6.

"This Year is the litmus test". That I can agree with. I do not have enough info to determine whether his understanding has as you state "skyrocketed", but I hope so. The fact that he works his ass off to get better, I appreciate that, but he is supposed to.

Finally, if you are right about him becoming a top ten QB (I hope you are right about that) and we can keep most of the pieces in place, we should at least get to the superbowl.

Dude just needs to be consistent we all know that, the leadership is there, the ability to play in big games that's there ... it's amazing how much we ask for in our QB he's still young and very inexperienced ...

I think this is the season he'll be much more consistent but I still see a lot more improvement coming forth in the next 2 seasons, to make this much improvement at this rate to me shows volumes about this guy, people outside the Jets fanbase may not understand this right away but when he's throwing TDs against their respective defenses on a weekly basis, people are going to be pretty butthurt pretty quickly - and realize Sanchez isn't a joke in the NFL

Now if only we can get the lockout lifted ...

the thing is, he's not really an inaccurate quarterback. I.E. he wasn't like a Jake Locker ish type college guy who couldn't crack 55% in college, and carries that over to the NFL.

he's not that great on the deep balls, but a lot of his incompletions are pretty simple throws that *he can make*. i don't know if it's because he gets too jumpy or what, but they're relatively easy throws to make for an NFL quarterback and someone with his skillset.

i think one thing about sanchez, and maybe this applies to a lot of quarterbacks, is that he's a rhythm guy. if he gets into a rhythm, he starts completing passes in bunches. when he's not in rhythm, he can't make any throws.

IMHO a lot of it is just mental, and in part due to being a young quarterback

Yep, there's a common misconception that he's inaccurate. He is very accurate, just inconsistent.

    There is a difference.

So he's inconsistent at being accurate which is inaccurate.

Yes, he struggles w/ comp % but that doesn't mean he is inaccurate. he takes chances downfield and doesn't take enough of the easy throws that increase comp %.

    no

because by that logic and argument, you're saying completion percentage is the sole metric in determining how accurate a quarterback is.
    which it isn't

Sanchez needs to get that completion percentage up to 60% in 2011.

Time for Sanchez to take it to the next level this year. Can you imagine what we'd be capable of?

Getting past the AFC Champ game for the next 4 years would be nice, and winning the Super Bowl all 4 times.

If we want to be specific, he broke 60% passing 6 times last year in the regular and post season. The Jets won 4 of those games, the two they lost were the playoffs against Pittsburg and the Bears game. 5 of his games were at or above 64% To gauge that, the all time leader in career pass completion percentage is Pennington at 66.0%.

His best game percentage wise was the first game against New England where he was at 70%.

Sanchez was below 50% 4 times last season, against the Ravens, Vikings, Miami and the Packers. The Jets lost all of those games except the Vikings game.

The Miami game was the worst, he was at 38% had four fumbles and lost one, threw a pick and only managed 216 yards on 44 attempts. He was however sacked six times, which could have been part of the problem.

So 624's original statement is true: "Yep, there's a common misconception that he's inaccurate. He is very accurate, just inconsistent."

    Drops were a problem too.

This plays such a huge part. He has below average attempts per game since we run so much. All of those drops kill his %.
