Well the Jets thought alot of pouha(one dimential player-run defender) they took two guys high in the draft- M Wilkerson and Kenrick ellis.
jets thought alot about a guy who is 32. plus all people do is knock the jets for depth, and now they have it
Pryce and S. Ellis are gone soon--maybe this year-- Pouha is 32 and a free agent after this season, Dixon/Ropati are long shots, Devito is a good player who worn down and is a free agent after the 2012 season, and defensive linemen ususally take two or even three years to develop. Before the draft there were no linemen on the 2013 roster who you could reasonably count on to be good. You've got to build the team for the long term and that means taking some defensive lineman high every now and then.
Yeah, Pouha and Devito will be playing for contracts. Both will be worth retaining and I doubt either will be calling for big money from other teams, unless we do reach and/or win the Super Bowl. If we can't retain at least one of them, then we'll be fishing early in the draft again.
Free agents from winning teams get bigger money than they deserve on playing ability alone-crappy teams like to try to make a media splash by saying they got so and so from the Steelers/Patriots/Colts/Ravens. Do you want to pay a 29 year old Devito something like the 5/25 Tampa Bay or Denver or San Francisco offers him if he plays like he did last year for two more years? Hard to tell this far out. The Pouha issue is a simple one; he's 32 and at some point father time is going to catch up with hm and his play will fall off dramatically. Is is this year or when he's 37? I have no idea.
Pouha is a solid starter and an incredible #2 NT, but he doesn't get the pressure or demand the double teams a really GOOD NT should. I like Pouha. but Kenrick Ellis has a greater upside and yes he is a big risk too. Ellis won't be starting week one, but by week 17 I think he will. well, if he stays out of trouble and Rex's dog house. Pouha had 59 tackles last year which is incredible for a NT/DT, but only two sacks when we have a great pass coverage secondary is not so incredible.
I I think Rex will utilize a lot of 4 man fronts with the personnel on the d line. The defense will still be a base 3-4 but Wilkerson, Pouha, Ellis, and DeVito look to be versatile enough to play DE or DT. The edge LBs don't necessarily help the case for 4 in the backfield either. I think we'll see: DE: Wilkerson, S. Ellis DT: Pouha, DeVito LB: Pace, Harris, Scott And DE: Wilkerson, Pouha NT: K. Ellis LB: Pace, Harris, Scott, Westermann
