Admittedly I know very little about McElroy, but it seems to me like me is very similar to Chad Pennington, meaning he is very intelligent, but doesn't have the physical skills of a top tier QB. He makes up for his lack of physical skills by being smart and accurate. I don't know how much his winning record factors in to things. While some scoff at the idea of another "noodle arm", I think he could turn into a very reliable backup or more depending what happens down the road. Hopefully "or more" never happens as a Jet.
I think the guy is smart enough and accurate enough to be a good "game manager" in the NFL or "Field General" as he likes to be called. And when your talking about a backup QB that's really all you can ask for
i was actually ecstatic when we drafted him. the guy knows how to read defenses, is a born competitor and leader. if he had the arm to make all the throws hed have been one of the best qbs in this draft. he should be a solid backup for years to come.
I'm liking this pick more and more as the days go by. Brunell sucks behind center, but this kid could turn out to be a reliable backup.
There are similarities but w/o dragging this into a Chad debate Chad was a top QB when healthy(unfortunately that wasn't very often). I think Greg will be a great long term backup.
Brunell is valuable for Sanchez, if Mark gets hurt and Brunell has to play many games we are in trouble but mark was/is very valuable to the growth of Mark.
Nyjunc, I agree with you, but like Tommy said, "Brunell sucks behind center,"... It smells like a player's coach that might be taking up a roster spot.
We would carry 3 QBs anyway, he's not taking a roster spot. In a pinch he can still play but if he had to play multiple games in a row we'd be in trouble but that would be the case w/ Clemens, McElroy(at this stage) or Brunell.
Yeah, I'm not denying Brunell's obvious contribution. All I'm saying that in the event of a Mark Sanchez injury, Brunell wouldn't be much help leading the team. Of course, McElroy wouldn't be much good this season anyway, and Brunell won't be back in 2012, so it's a moot point.
Yeah, I'm glad that McElroy has the potential to be a great backup/starter, I just hope we never have to see him play.
Exactly. McElroy isn't going to be a starter in this league, and it's completely unfair to suggest he's as talented as Pennington. However, he has exactly what I want out of a backup: an ability to absorb the playbook and not lose his head as soon as he's forced to set foot on the field. I love that he got a head start by heading out to camp. He just may have the playbook memorized by TC and can start getting comfortable in the offense at that point. He could be the primary backup by the end of this season, let alone next.
Too much hating on Chad. He took us to the playoffs 3 x's which is a lot more than most of the QBs this team has seen. I still would like to see ChadP back as a QB coach. He's got a great mind. Besides he played for 9 years for us and that's an eternity for this franchise. Just disallow him to play anything but soccer.
I'm guessing someone heard Tanny on NFL Radio Thursday morning @ 10 AM... Am I right? uh??? (smart QB without the greatest arm strength will forever be known as the Pennington) Mildly retarded with a cannon should be knows as the JaMarcus Russell.
McElroy = Matt Shaub type player, needs little motivation and has all the tools... Might not be Pennington 2.0 but damn near close to it...
Who cares? Once he injured the shoulder he was toast. Nacho has done more in 2 seasons than noodle ever did. And noodle was still riding the pine at this point in his career. I don't want him anywhere near nacho, I don't want him picking up the wuss mentality of not taking chances. Sent from ... FU KOZ
