I was surprised we didn't get one with the 4th pick which leads me to believe something will happen during free agency? Thought?
Maybe the Jets like their current linebackers. Maybe they thought that there were no good linebackers in the draft (possible). But, yeah, I think they are going to try to get a lb in free agency imo. They definitely seem to be one guy short at this point.
Or maybe we were old, slow, and pedestrian on the defensive line...not allowing our rush LBers to run off the edge without double teams. Or maybe it was both.
So just who is our number one back-up outside linebacker? I guess Calvin Pace and whatever his first name Thomas just never get injured. Does'nt Pace usually miss the 1st 4 games of every season? Who backs up Pace and disappearing Thomas?
Does anyone asking the question whether we'll pick up an OLB in free agency realize who is available via free agency? No one but a couple of franchised monster contracts. We can pick up some cuts or some scrubs, but we're going with Pace and Thomas again.
The DL additions will mask the lack of speed off the edge to a degree. There will also be June 1st cuts, and there is a possibility Calvin Pace plays better having fully healed his foot.
don't discount Tannys ability to make a trade. a guy may not be a Fa but I am willing to bet tanny could snag some OLB via a trade...
Look out for cuts also. Altho chances are we won't find anybody better than what we have already in that market.
Tanny could address the pass rush via FA But the key will be out kicking game, safety, OL depth I think OL depth would work via FA from the draft
Obviously we won't know for sure but what about restricted free agents? If we can get a 24-26 year rising OLB I think it may be the worth the sacrifice of what will likely be a low draft pick in any round.
That's true, but we have to be careful about what contracts we're acquiring. It's a shame we have to wait a while (and possibly a long one at that) to see how things play out.
David and Bart are studs. I've always felt that Calvin's a little underrated. He always seems to get a late start to his season and doesn't get on track until late in the season/postseason. Bryan should strictly be a two-down linebacker, we need a speed rusher to platoon him.
Here's a list of available guys: http://football.about.com/od/nationalfootballleague/a/freeagentLB.htm Remember, Hali and Woodley were both franchised. Antwan Barnes is someone to watch. Rex coached him and he never really did much until he was an injury addition in San Diego. Again, that's for depth, though. Westermann will likely see more time outside this year. I like that they made him versatile early on here.
Yes I really dont think he is that bad of an OLB.When healthy he finds ways to get them sacks.Especially now with hopefully our upgraded DL.
