He's just not skilled enough to start. He's had injuries that have made him less than average athletically, and no amount of smarts will make him what we need at OLB. He's a nice story and a good, cheap backup/specials guy, but if he's starting that means the Jets foolishly ignored their biggest need.
I would say you're dealing with an absurdly small sample size and you can't just dismiss a guy who came into the league and learned the position and then was injured. I think if we're counting on a rookie to come in and play better than a guy who's been in the system two years we're in trouble, and I think it's too early to make a call on Westerman. I really don't know what you'd base your scouting report on. -X-
I can't see him starting in a top-level defense, maybe an increased role but with us likely adding a good pure pass rusher I can only see him starting over Bryan Thomas if anything. I don't think that will even happen
I am a die hard mets and jets fan. so as you know i always hated the teams that "buy championships" and it seems as tho thats what the jets are trying to do lately. its upsetting to me as a fan. so i would definitely love to see a guy like this get the starting job and have a solid career for us, more so then picking up a big name free agent.
If you're referring to my post, I'm basing it on having seen pretty much every game the guy's played for the last 6 years, both at RU and with the Jets. When he was in school I honestly didn't think he was skilled enough athletically to even play end in the NFL, much less drop off to OLB, then factor in the injuries that really slowed him later in his college career and it only makes things worse. I'm glad he's been in the system and all, but unless he's developed some top notch pass rush moves and an ability to play in space all while not seeing serious PT, I have no faith.
