Nowhere did I bash him for doing what he is doing, I am discussing the silly comments about "only" having $400,000 to get through the next few months. I don't have any sympathy for an NFL player not having enough money to get through a lockout that would last potentially a few months.

The Jets should suspend for the Miami game, at least!

I bet most NFL players don't buy houses since there are no guaranteed contracts. Why rent a place and throw money away when not getting paid. Makes perfect sense.

Plenty, but that's a product of the city I live in.

It's incredibly prudent on his part. That's about it. He shouldn't be felt sorry for because he made a smart decision to save his money with labor uncertainty.

As far as others saying he's got plenty of money, that's true...for now. Slauson's a Sociology grad from the University of Nebraska. He's counting on his NFL money to outweigh whatever job he gets once his playing days are over. He's not going to be hired to any sort of career job right now given that the lockout could end at any time and he could go back to work. No employer is going to want to take on that part time work, so it's either working an hourly temporary job or moving back home and being able to continue training. I know which one I'd rather have him doing.

True. You probably do know plenty of people making $400k a yr and yes, it is a product of the city. I live in Dallas and besides a few doctors/surgeons, i don't know anybody making that much. Most of the poeple I know make $70-250k. The ones making around $250k are the ones buying and selling properties every quarter just for the heck of it. So I guess they must be well off.

Nobody needs to feel sorry for Slauson. He made a decision to save money, but that doesn't mean he's broke. Thats actually very smart. Why pay rent electricity etc when you can live with your parents for free. Living with parents and spending time with them is his choice.

Now I don't know WTF JaMarcus Russel did with his money. Probably ate it...literally. It was like $40mil guaranteed, plus salaries and his $1.5mil mansion had to be auctioned or foreclosure?

@ $300k for a small house in NJ? I'm lucky I can afford it as it is. I doubt an NFL player is gonna buy a "starter house" for a team he may be with unknown seasons.

In your parents basement - yes.

    ^^^ WIN.

Rent on a decent place is easily $1500 a month. A typical 2 bedroom condo or apartment is $1200 a month in a decent area like lower Bergen county or eastern Essex (Lyndhurst, Nutley, Bloomfield, Rutherford. et al). If Slauson was renting a house where most of the players lived in towns like Livingston, Florham Park, Summit, etc, rent is NOT cheap. Easily $2500 a month or more.

He's probably made $400k over the last 2 years so although thats a lot more than most of us will ever make in 2 years, its not Revis or Sanchez money by any stretch of the imagination.

Remember when Revis said that he needed a new contract so that he could be able to "feed his family"? Slauson can afford an apartment.

I thought I read 800K per year. Sorry, he made about 750-800 combined. I think that puts him around the 33% to 35% tax bracket. Of course that's only federal, plus state (6.37%), then benefits. So he probably took home 200K per year or so (over only two years). So I guess I can understand his position a bit more.

Although unless you're filthy rich, you don't buy a house outright with cash. You get a mortgage. So I still think he can afford a pretty nice house with that salary, and I'm sure he should have some money saved in case of a lockout.

He wouldn't be paying cash for the house, he'd take out a mortgage like normal people. He could afford a nice big house in NJ based on his salary(which doesn't include his guaranteed money).

Plus guaranteed money. he could still afford to buy a nice house. He shouldn't have any money problems right now considering he didn't pay for college and he is right out of college. His next contract should be much bigger, he'll be fine if there is a lockout.

I know it's hard to believe, but not everybody lives around NYC.

I could live most places in the world, and even a lot of places in the US with that kind of chunk up front. Proper investing and frugal spending can take you far.

heh, reminds me of a saying I heard once, "According to Italians, the Delaware River IS the west coast".

    So true:lol:

Depends on the house. Is it a 50 room mansion? Or a 5 room guest house on the back 40? I'd be in for that.

Man, I'm really living in the wrong area. $1200 - 1500/mo for an apartment? $2500 for a house? $300k starter homes? I need to get to Jersey. Can't get a freestanding house in our neighborhood for under 7 figures, and $300k will maybe get you a studio apt.
