So it seems like the Jets #1 priority is re-signing Holmes... Rotoworld's opinion (for what it's worth) is he should command Brandon Marshall type money (47 mill in 5 years)... I think that's crazy! Considering his off the field risks (one more failed piss test and good-bye NFL for a year) and his actual contribution on the field he shouldn't get a penny more than 8 mill per year, and even that would be a pretty generous contract... I'm hoping he re-signs for around 7.5. Something around 37.5 mill for 5 years (7.5 avg), that can go up to a total of 40 mill if he reaches some incentives, would be a fair contract. How much money do you guys think he should get?
I think this dosen't warrent it's own thread and was being discussed in the previous Holmes thread just fine.
If there's another thread sorry please merge... but to me it looked as though all the other threads where about who we should keep between Holmes-Edwards or Cro bla bla bla... this thread is only to discuss Holmes value (since the Jets have clearly shown he's the priority, regardless of what we think of Edwards and Cro) in terms of $$$ maybe comparing him to other WRs in this league (like for example Boldin that makes 7 mill per year).
my opinion is that holmes contract should be in 5-6 mill per year in base, and then loaded with incentives. Some simple ones (start 10 games, 35 receptions) some more difficult (10 touchdowns, lead team to 14 wins), and if he hits all his incentives in a single year, a 9 mill salary. With the restriction that if he gets hit with a conduct policy violation the he can not receive 50% of his incentives that year, and if he gets hit with a suspension for any reason, he can not get any incentives, and if he fails a piss test and gets booted for a full season, he gets 1 million in pay for the year (heaven forbid we let him go hungry).
I think in that case he get's no money at all... players don't get paid when they're suspended do they? That said I agree the contract should be low but contain many incentives...
It's all about how much is guaranteed. The total amount of the contract is usually just fluff to make it look bigger. I think he'll get something closer to what Anquan Boldin got than what Marshall got. Boldin signed a 3 year 25 million dollar extension with $10 mill guaranteed, plus the 1 year 3 million he already had on his existing contract - total of 4 years, 28 million, 13 mil guaranteed. Holmes is younger so I think he'll get 5 years, for between 35 and 40 million, with 15-20 million of it guaranteed. The Jets absolutely have to protect themselves against the possibility of him screwing up again and being suspended for a year as well.
new cba... I'm sure that players will get some money even if they are suspended... But I think contracts with medium salaries and tons of incentives that gives holmes (and edwards) reason to put forth all of their effort is a great weapon. Give them enough easy to obtain incentives to get their expected salary to be about what they want, and give them incentives to pay them much more than they could hope to get in base on the open market. But tie they them down with behavioral clauses, if they get in trouble with the NFL their incentives go away, and we get them on the cheap. Win-Win, if they produce we pay them what they are worth, they don't produce (or get in trouble) we don't have pay up.
F*** Boldin. He's a glorified version of JCo The problem with the Holmes situation is ...Just how good could he be with a decent OC. Look at how the Pats scheme for Welker, and Woodhead. You get Holmes 100 balls in open space, he scores 20 TD's over a season. I love Braylon Edwards because he's more of a prototypical WR (my favorite part of the game)...but Holmes' potential has not yet been tapped.
This is a tough one. If Holmes wasn't on his 3rd strike...I'd break the bank for him. Having said that, this is the type of playmaker Sanchez needs in this offense. Let's hope Holmes keeps his nose clean and continues to make clutch plays for this team.
If we give Holmes anywhere close to Brandon Marshall money, Braylon can take a hike. There's no way we pay two receivers top dollar in a run-first offense.
I'm not even sure what you mean by the second part. We've been top 4 in rushing YPG since Rex got here.
Have you not bought quality weed lately? Stuff is expensive. Any contract less than $10m/yr will not be enough to keep him 'happy'.
