The funny thing is that he didn't even sound like a retard in any of his pre-draft interviews. His stupidity on the field was a complete blindside.
If the Jets drafted a 6 foot 3 inch whale shit and stuck it next to Pouha, it would have more sacks and tackles than Vern. It would also have the added bonus of smelling better.
One thing this shows is that fucking up a first round pick does not set a franchise back 5 years like so many like to claim. QB's are a different story, of course.
If you're smart and willing to spend money you can afford to make a draft mistake once in a while. The thing was the Jets had already upgraded the OLB spot with Pace so in theory they were trying to strengthen the position that wasn't considered a weakness.
Also, the running back would likely run around the shit, thus slowing him down, instead of running right through Vernon.
6 sacks a season will get you a nice contract nowadays in the NFL. Look at Calvin Pace. I believe he had 7 sacks or so before we signed him to a huge contract at the time for OLB
I respectfully disagree with your statement 100%. Just think IF we had drafted a player that contributed instead pf VG today we may have been CHAMPIONs of the FB world since we only needed better D to get us over the hump (namely a player who can pressure the QB :jets:
Yeah, I think that pertains to QBs more than anything, because you're stuck playing the guy, hoping he catches on, all the while turning away guys who can probably win games for you. By the time you figure out he sucks you've wasted 3-5 years on average. Other positions have a shorter learning curve and a quicker hook.
Gotta say, while I don't usually agree with champ... the elite pass rusher that Gholston was supposed to be could have been the missing piece to our Super Bowl puzzle of 2010/11.
A lot of things could have been. How about Kris Jenkins in the middle of the D line? Think the Steelers run wild in the first half? Probably not.
This list is complete shit. Archuleta? He was actually a really good player. He had a great combine, but he also had a great college career. Same with Mamula. Bey is only in his second year, and really hasn’t been THAT bad—especially when you consider the team he’s on. Shit, he’s even had a 100 yard game. Not saying he’s great, but I wouldn’t call him a workout wonder because Oakland drafted him 20 spots too high. Matt Jones wasn’t terrible- he was just a fuckup. Sullivan sucked. Gholston sucks. These guys all had good college careers though. It’s not like they came from nowhere, ran a fast 3 cone drill, got drafted high, and just sucked. I must say though, we have a rare one in Gholston. It’s not very often that a top 10 non QB is this bad, and never had an injury. Typically guys that bust are injury riddled. Vernon may be the biggest bust of all time.
Sorry I totally disagree with that statement also. Injuries are supposedly part of the game & maybe we erred when we depended to much on Jenks based on his playing time with us. To expect him to be playing in our 19th game of the season is really totally far fetched based on his past playing time history. But to blow the #6 overall player in the draft is a horse of another color & is one of the reasons that after all these years of us playing FB our overall record is still under 500 because of all those wonderful draft choices we screwed up year after year :jets:
Having someone who was worthwhile instead of Gholston would have been nice this past year but it isn't as simple as you want it to be. If Gholston is someone who could rush the passer maybe the defense wins one of those games at the end of 08, Mangini gets another year, and the Jets never have Rex and Sanchez to get us to the AFCCG the last two years. Butterfly effect man.
& if your scenario occurred maybe Man gets them to the AFCCG & even the SB. Getting to that game means ZERO like even below ZERO if you lose it since all it means is we are losers like all the teams that did not get to the POs & all those that got to POs but exited before us :jets:
Maybe, we will never know. What I do know is that you haven't done anything to show me that drafting Gholston set the Jets back 5 years, if it all.
Sorry to say whomever educated you did a grade D job since whenever you draft a non productive 1st rounder the team is set back. Now whether it 1 year, 2 years, 3 three years or more no matter you are setback. The same goes for HCs see Man 3 years negative results, Herm 5 years negative results, BB dumping us negative results BP also negative results, Coslet negative results, Kotex negative results so on & so on until you reach EWBANK positive results (that was 1968 season 1969 SB)
I remember that a bunch of mocks had us taking him and almost all had him going first round. The only thing is that the known risk in taking Gholston was that his production came in spurts and he was inconsistent throughout his career. Great example of that was the National Championship against Florida his last year when he was virtually invisible the whole game.
