I thougt when I saw this it was a pass, I still do, no matter how many replays, that call was wrong, imo. and then we have this.... (sorry shitty video, but it does show whats needed)
There's no way that's the tuck rule and there's no way they were overturning the call on the field. The only thing to complain about with that play is why the fuck didn't we just run the ball and try to get into halftime.
Point of the thread was that at times the tuck rule is just too hard to call. But I still believe that Sanchez's arm was in the process of moving forward as the hit came.
That Sanchez play doesn't resemble the tuck rule. Why would you use it in this thread if your thread is about the tuck rule?
I agree third and long deep in your own territory I just finished telling my buddies I would run it and go in to the half 17-0
So did I and I started to walk to the pisser assuming that's what they would do. I blew a gasket when I saw them pass.
I think you put them in that situation schotty would normally go conservative and call a run. Maybe all the criticism on his play calling got to him. Of all the times to take a chance. Can only wonder what the second half would have been like down 17 instead of 21
Speaking of rules. Am I the only one that would like to see the 5 yard face mask back in play? Tired of seeing 15 yard penalties for Grabbing a fasemask for a half a second.
The tuck rule is an exception to this rule. It applies if the quarterback brings his arm forward in a passing motion, but then changes his mind and tries to keep hold of the football rather than making a pass. In this situation, if the quarterback loses the ball while stopping his passing motion or bringing the ball back to his body, it is still considered a forward pass (and thus an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground).[1] Mike Pereira, the former director of officiating of the NFL, noted that the design of the rule obviates the need to consider the quarterback's intent,[2] although the referee still must judge whether the initial forward movement of the arm was "intentional" on the part of the player or not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuck_rule
In order to make QB intent a non-factor and to just make things a lot simpler in general, I think the NFL should change the rule so that if the ball leaves the QB's hand after a defensive player makes contact with the QB's shoulder/arm area, then it's a fumble. It would make all the rulings a lot less subjective.
WSW has this covered. The reason it was still called a fumble had nothing to do with the tuck rule and everything to do with the fact that his arm was not clearly moving forward.
He was cocking his arm back and almost exactly as his hand was about to move forward, it made contact with the helmet knocking it loose, which is why it was ruled a fumble. I was praying they somehow called it an incomplete pass because i'm a jets fan, but i knew they made the right call.
I agree. If they would have just thrown in the towel for the first half, they might have been able to come back and end up taking the lead 19-17. That's not a given obviously, but we would have had a much better chance. OT: I hate the tuck rule.
