Why not? You say he won't get the same kind of contract but then go on to say it wouldn't surprise you in the least to see him get signed for almost the same $/year?
Honest question: Does anyone think that loyalty to the Jets and wanting to play for Rex will have any MONETARY effect on signing Braylon or Holmes? I know they both want to resign, but it always seems that cash trumps it all.
Yes. Not in a big number, I mean, Raiders 7M > Jets 5M... but I'd say Jets 6M could defeat Raiders' 7M. --- And the more I think of it, the more I like BE over SH (obviously, if both are available, even better).
$7 million + the yearly contract escalation = $7.5 - 8 million. I think Braylon will get $6 million per. Maybe even a little less to stay with the Jets. It's not almost the same.
Only for Braylon. Holmes hasn't made his big payday yet. He's going to be all about the cash, and really should be.
I truly believe Edwards is a top 10 guy and is a must bring back. One, as has been previously mentioned, he's second to none in run blocking and despite his reputation, never gives up on plays. Often times you'll see him making blocks 30 yards down the field. Second, and most importantly, you need to look at the QBs he has played for. The 2 qbs he has played with for the most games are Derek Anderson and Mark Sanchez. Two guys who were both very very young when he played with them. I think we can all agree that DA is the most mediocre QB in the NFL. Mark Sanchez is a second year player whos TE and RB caught 40% of his passes. He's a young player who loves his checkdowns. That limits Braylon's opportunities, not to mention he shared them with Santonio Holmes and Jerricho Cotchery. His numbers were undoubtedly deflated by these factors in addition to the fact that we run the football as much as any other team in the NFL. I believe he will be undervalued because of this and we should give him an extension
I could see braylon taking a little less cus he already made a ton of money as the #3 pick. The other guys won't
Yeah, 107 is good if you don't have many holes to replace. I'm expecting a cap around $140 million based on predicted escalation from 2009 to 2010 and a desire by owners to keep things somewhat level next season with regard to the projected cap. After signing rookies, figure we'll have about $28 million to work with if the cap comes in that high. Initial year values for Holmes/Edwards add up to maybe $11 - 12 million. That leaves $16 million and close to 20 holes to fill/players to resign. If FA comes after the draft and we have an OUTSTANDING draft, we may be able to get away with that and retain either Harris or Cro. Seems unlikely, though, unless Mark reworks his deal and/or we restructure Pace/Scott. It's just going to be a tougher prospect this year, finding and replacing veterans with a shortened FA and less time to actually train/introduce them to the gameplan. I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of going into a shortened offseason with a whole lot of new players. It's a big part of why I'm so desperate to see Edwards and Holmes re-signed, and why I hope Tanny doesn't balk at the numbers and decide he needs it for the defense. With the record number of players in FA this season, I can see plenty of depth players being found on the cheap floating around the FA pool. Agreed. I hate the 18 game season. The only way it benefits us at all is that it's going to be a leverage piece. The NFLPA may be able to negotiate a higher cap/revenue percentage if they use the 18 game season as a bargaining chip. I don't think we see a players' strike. I do think we see even more changes to NFL pension built into the new CBA. I also think football is too strong to have a true dark period. It doesn't require the same kind of commitment as any of the other sports as far as number of games, which means it's a lot less likely to see any drop in attendance and revenue. It's a concern for the casual fan, sure, but I wouldn't call the drop off a necessary 'dark period'. Football would have to fall a long way for me to use that term, and it's so far outpacing the other sports that I don't see it happening.
Yes, Boldin received $7 million per. Contract escalation would drive that contract up at least $500k this season. I don't expect Edwards to see more than $6 million per. Over a 5 year contract, that's a difference of $7.5 million. I don't consider that close. We're talking about number levels at which $1 million per is actually a lot of separation.
I couldn't find anything talking about escalators in his contract. 6-7 million is pretty much the same range IMO. I mean what are you considering the same range as $7MM/year? 6.75 - 7.25?
Edwards REALLY likes it here apparently. I'm sure tannenbaum might give him a small contract because of the DUI. He might sign it, im not sure what other teams want him tho. If we can get edwards for say 4 years/20 million Than thats a win for us imo.
He does have a DUI that lowers his value. That 6.1 was from the cleveland contract. Does anyone know the total payroll as of now for the team for the 2011 season? and what was the cap last year?
Personally, if it comes down to signing either Edwards or Brad Smith, I would much rather get Smith signed because I feel he means alot more to the team, with all the versatility. For some reason I just don't see all 3 getting re-signed.
A DUI does not lower a contract to what you think its going to be. You still have to pay him market value because he hasn't seen any jailtime. What can happen is that the guaranteed money is less due to the infractions. He'll still see 6.5 on average each year, but the guaranteed money can be smaller due to his off the field trouble.
