so we blindly follow phil simms because he stands up for sanchez? i understand sticking up for your kids, i understand not wanting to hear anything from the desmond howards of the world but i would have to say phil probably overreacted just a tad. he should have given him a stone cold stunner.
He was an All-NFL (or All-Pro if that is your bag) choice as a punt returner in 1996 and 2000. In 1996, he was the consensus 1st-teamer at punt returner. It is hard to say a guy was a bust if he was ever an all-league performer. I am uncomfortable calling Howard a bust. Vernon "Gladys" Gholston, Ryan Leaf, Art Schlichter- those guys were busts. What I will say is that Howard did not turn out to be what he was supposed to be. When Washington traded up for him it was considered a brilliant move at the time. Here were the Super Bowl champions trading up to get who many, many people thought was the best WR and playmaker in the draft. He did very little his first two years. In his third year, he won a starting WR job and did some nice things (40 catches, 727 yards, 5 TDs). It looked like maybe he was going to become pretty good. But that was it. He went to Jacksonville in 1995 and did not pan out there. Then in his final 7 years he caught only 31 passes.
It seems this is a black and white issue to you. If I too were to make it a black or white issue, then I would say Howard was a bust. But, again, I am not completely comfortable calling a guy a bust when he was an all-league performer for two seasons. See, to me, a bust is a guy who was basically a complete zero in the league. I just cannot say Howard was a complete zero.
Phil Simms is the toughest SOB I ever met. If I was there, I would have slipped him a couple of Benjamins.
Fair enough. You and I define "bust" differently.... For example, to me, Marvin Jones was a bust. He was a solid player for many years, a team leader and even one of my favorite NYJ ever; but based on his draft position and expectations, he was a bust. Since we define 'bust' differently we'll just have to agree to disagree.
I think I use different levels. There are the out-and-out embarrassing bust guys like Gholston, Leaf, and Schlichter. Everybody can agree those guys were busts. Then you have guys like Howard. Again, if I was asked if he was a bust or was not a bust and those were my only two choices, then I would say he was a bust. However, he wasn't a complete zero. Bust is way too strong a word to describe Marvin Jones. He played too long and too well and started for too long on some good teams to be described as a bust.
cool i just gained alot of respect for simms. he is the man, and the dude who said that shit to him is a prick.
Howard should man up if he is going to make comments. Don't go spouting your business all over Twitter like a punkass.
And to add, Simms is not 100% right either. There are better ways to handle business like that than challenging Howard to a fight.
Matt Simms does suck, though. I don't really think Phil has a leg to stand on here nearly assaulting a guy over (accurate) insults said about his adult son. Desmond would've whooped that old man's ass.
Marvin Jones is a former all-pro. Go back and look at that first round. Aside from Bettis and Roaf, they passed on such luminaries as Curtis Conway (amazingly and unfortunately he'd end up here anyway) Patrick Bates and John Copeland. I know people are going to bring up Strahan, but the entire league passed on him.
I'm aware of this. He was supposed to be an impact player. He turned out to be a very solid 2-down ILB.... I loved his game, but he didn't turn out to be what they hoped.
I like Phil Simms, but he makes critical comments about players in every game that he covers. He should have thicker skin than that. I'm sure he's pissed off a lot of fathers by saying shit about their NFL sons during game broadcasts. It's a little hypocritical to start threatening to punch people because the same thing happens to him. The smarter move, IMO, would have been to shoot back at Howard with something about his own short-lived NFL career. I wouldn't call him a bust, but he certainly never became the player some people thought he would be.
