I keep seeing this thrown out there over and over. Here are the facts. 12 teams since 1970-71 have gone to the AFC/NFC championship game 3 or more straight years. Additionally there's I think 4 or 5 more who have done it 3 of 4 years. Anyway, has it been less common in recent years? Of course, but to say it won't happen is stupidity. Anyway, here is the list. 1971-1974 Dallas Cowboys 4 1972-1974 Miami Dolphins 3 1974-1978 Oakland Raiders 5 1975-1977 LA Rams 3 1975-1977 Pittsburgh Steelers 3 1981-1983 Dallas Cowboys 3 1989-1991 SF 49ers 3 1991-1994 Buffalo Bills 4 1993-1995 SF 49ers 3 1993-1996 Dallas Cowboys 4 1996-1998 GB Packers 3 2002-2005 Philly Eagles 4
Its unlikely of course because its so difficult to make it there but anything can happen any year. There will always be new firsts to football. Like first fat coach to win a superbowl :/
I just made this point in another thread--look at the last ten years of AFC playoffs and look at where the games have been played in the division/championship round. A vast majority have been in Foxboro, Indy, Pittsburgh and San Diego after they got past Oakland early in the 2000s. A few other teams snuck in there for a game or two, but most of the big games have been in those places between those teams. We've kind of cracked into the club, we need to pass New England and get those Foxboro games to be in our place. If you're one of the good teams consistently it's not that hard to get back. It's hard to get back when you're one of the also-rans who grab a Wild Card every few years, which is what we need to get away from. At the time it was a step up for us, now we need to take that next step. If we can hang onto a good coach and QB for a while, which would be a first, it can be done.
Plus Rex, some assistants, Bart Scott and Leonhard have all been in there 3 straight years as well. Next year we take the next step.
They go to the SB, but they don't necessarily win it. History tells us the Jets are going very soon in that case. Let us be fortunate to be a part of the winning side.
Yes! As hard as that loss in Pittsburgh was, I was able to shrug it off pretty quickly because it's just part of the maturation process for this team in my opinion. Sanchez looked like a boss and a leader even when down by 21 pts and him getting 6 games of playoff experience before his 25 birthday is just crazy. A couple of additions to the front 7 and this team will get over the hump. Of course it would be ideal if the Jets only had to play 2 home games to get to the Super Bowl next year.
Over the last 18 years (Since I remember starting to watch the Super Bowl, starting with Super Bowl XXVII) Here is how many times teams have gone: Patriots-5 Steelers-4 Packers-3 Cowboys-3 Bills-2 Broncos-2 Colts-2 Giants-2 Rams-2 Bears-1 Cardinals-1 Saints-1 Buccaneers-1 Raiders-1 Panthers-1 Eagles-1 Seahawks-1 49ers-1 Chargers-1 Falcons-1 Titans-1 Ravens-1 Dolphins-0 Jets-0 Bengals-0 Browns-0 Texans-0 Jaguars-0 Chiefs-0 Redskins-0 Vikings-0 Lions-0 Its kinda sad because 22 of 32 teams have gone, and the Jets are clearly the best of the 10 teams who haven't gone over that time period. Maybe the Vikings.
Third time was the charm for Steve Young. Then again, it took McNabb 4, just to lose to the Patriots.
History doesn't predict the future, so it's not going to tell you anything about what the Jets will or won't do next season or the season after that. There might not even BE a next season.
like was said in a thread a number of weeks ago about the same situation, difficulty of getting to 3 afc champ games in a row. its a moot point to begin with but it is an especially moot point because we have already been to 2. if you were to sit here today and say the jets will make it to the afc champ game the next 3 years in a row the odds would be against you. at this point all we need to do is make it next year. and while the odds are still against you they are a shit ton more favorable than the previous scenario.
I don't remember any analysts saying that no team has ever done it, or that it's impossible. They were just saying that geting there multiple times in a row is very hard, which is true.
It's not impossible, but hey, if we lose the first game of the season it'll be "oh see I told you so, blah blah blah, we suck, blah blah blah.." Yea, cuz we didn't do that this past season right? Just gotta believe, and see what the future lies for us..
the big point next yr has to be to win the division outwrite get the first round bye and play the afc title game in the meadowlands both title games were winnable but the team didnt play a complete game in either game
Football records are made to be broken. If the Jets play 4 quarters in either of the last AFC Championship games, this conversation would be moot.
I've read it multiple times on this forum over the past few weeks. It's been a reoccurring theme. Not sure how many posters have been saying it, but I keep reading it, so i decided to research it.
