There are obviously a million things you could do. I would have begun informal conversation with their agents either during the season or, if for policy reasons I decided not to negotiate extensions in-season, the morning after the steelers game. "What is your client looking for" and "what would it take for us to sign him without him even looking at free agency" are really easy questions to ask with no downside.
I would do that unless I already had reason to think the agent was going to ask for too high a number. absent that, I would make that informal inquiry.
Edwards won't be re-signing with the Jets. He wants to be on a team where he can be the No. 1 reciever with 80+ catches per year. That just isn't going to happen with the Jets and he knows it. Holmes is staying, and along with Cotchery there will not be enough balls thrown to Edwards regardless of the money. Edwards was great this season and I'm really happy he was a Jet. Sorry to see him go but that is just the way it is going to work out.
offense without Holmes > With Holmes Also we had no pass rush at all this season so exactly how bad would losing Harris be? We could also use the franchise tag on someone... Another thing is what other team will want Holmes or Edwards...they are both troublemakers. The "top" teams dont need them. The lower teams are rebuilding. Which of the other 31 team would want them?
our offense will not be better without Holmes. No offense is better without Santonio. He's a rare clutch player.
I think, based upon his play, his focus and his on field leadership, Edwards wants to be a Jet and could definitely live with the situation he had this season w/Holmes. The big question is, did 2010 show he matured and rid himself of his past demons, or is it just a salary drive? But I do think he wants to be a Jet. Holmes.... I see him as more of a guy going to the big money. The problem is, I think the combination of Holmes and Edwards is unique. I don't see the Jets getting the same type of production by keeping one and replacing the other. Where would the Jets be without the two spectacular TD catches by Holmes & Edwards in the Pats' game? So I don't think its a Holmes or Edwards question. They have to find a way to keep both. BTW...doesn't Edwards seem the the type of guy the Pats would scoop up, and would kill us for the next five years if we let him go?
With Tom Brady as the QB, yes Edwards would do damage. But he doesn't fit their system of offense, so I wouldn't worry about them getting him. A shitty team with a mediocre QB will attack Edwards with a 7 mil a year salary and overpay for his skillset. He might have 80 grabs on a new team, but he's going to be unhappy in a small market that doesn't win. He'll also be leaving Rex Ryan's awesome coaching. Anyone who leaves this team must hate their new environment. Ask Kerry Rhodes.
Definitely agree. I think the Jets under used Edwards. I think we can use him as a Keyshawn Johnson type player who is big, tough, can go over the middle, move the chains and catch jump balls in the endzone. Additionally, he has enough speed to get deep. I think he is more complete than Holmes.
