Yeah but if they lock out, players and coaches will not have contact.

I said this in the coach resigning threads when people were asking why teams are extending coaches who should be fired. It's because if teams get a new coach, who has a new system and they lockout, the new coach will not be able to implement his new system. He would have to default to the old system the players knew. So if that's the case why sign a new coach?

Anyway, Wilson may not even receive coaching prior to the season.

Also, let me put a disclaimer here, I am a firm believer an agreement will get done and not affect preseason training.

The point of the matter is, teams are acting preemptively to protect themselves by signing coaches who shouldn't be signed (Marvin Lewis, Coughlin? ignore Oakland), so the Jets would be negligent using your point by saying they can get by with Wilson, he just needs coaching which may not be there.

Considering they are outside LBs and not inside lbs yes I like them. Middle Lbs changing systems is a completely different animal.

Alan Branch is an intriguing thought. He's finally starting to play better, but not enough to merit a big contract. Same argument of "if anyone can get him to fulfill his potential, it's the Jets."

Nothing, just that you would expect more of emphasis on the pass rush out of a 4-3 than a 3-4.

I doubt any player takes a significantly lower salary to stay w/ the Jets. Look @ Revis, he loves being a Jet (or I think he does) & he still needed his money. Players always say it's not about the money but yet they somehow wind up w/ whomever gave them the highest bid anyway.

    ...

You think OLBs are the same in the 3-4 and 4-3?

Name a dominant 3-4 OLB measuring in at 6' 230 like Ernie Sims. I'll bet you can name one, and even he has 10 pounds on Sims.

Okay fair point, didn't mean to put words in your mouth.

See my points to IJR about coaching and lockout.

You could make a case that a 4-3 OLB is similar to a 3-4 ILB but I don't think that's where he was going

Cro will...he needs to pay for all his kids and a lockout will bankrupt his ass. Give him a signing bonus and minimum base...done! Next please.

I'm really hoping Ellis want to retire a Jet and will give a big time hometown discount. In that case I think we can make do on the DL and dont really see it as a major need. DE in a 3-4 just not an impact position and I think the guys we have and the rotation we can make do with.

The biggest needs I see are a super freak pass rushing OLB, two would be nice and a ball hawking safety. Improving these two areas can bring this D to the elite level.

    Shaun Ellis
    Steve Weatherford
    Brodney Pool
    Tony Richardson
    Braylon Edwards
    Wayne Hunter
    Trevor Pryce
    David Harris
    Robert Turner
    Nick Folk
    Antonio Cromartie
    Lance Laury
    Santonio Holmes
    Eric Smith
    Brad Smith
    James Ihedigbo
    Drew Coleman
    Kellen Clemens
    Marquice Cole
    Michael Turkovich
    Marcus Dixon

Folk has to go. Damn it's gonna be two more years before we get into the playoffs again. If they aren't able to retain some of these guys it's gonna be rough.

Similar in size, but not technique. It's not where he was going anyway.

OLBs are typically your guys who you send after the qb and I think thats where we need to upgrade most. Kill me.

I picked Ernie because I love his speed and he can hit and speed is definately something this team needs a bit of. Does he fit the 3-4 system to the tee no he doesn't but neither does Vilma and I can only imagine how good he would be here with Ryans hybrid 3-4, 4-3.

Why not replace one Oregon QB with the guy who replaced him at Oregon? Actually I'm not sure Dixon would be cheap nor would I be entirely comfortable with him being the #2 guy behind Sanchez.

I still like Seneca Wallace, granted he's not a franchise QB nor will he ever will be but I think he does a decent job of managing games.

Is it even remotely possible that we bring back Pennington?

I have always been a fan of Tyler Thigpen.

There are actually a lot of backup type QBs available this year

Brady Quinn, Drew Stanton, Luke McNown, Bruce Gradkowski, and Troy Smith.

All of those guys you listed are going to command a higher price. I'm just not sure we have the luxury of that with the other players we have to resign.
