If this article means anything, it means the NFL owners and powers that be may give more opportunities to "loose or unconventional" guys who may not have gotten those opps before.

Guys like Mangini, Coughlin and Belichick will be considered too tightly wound and perhaps not be considered in the future.

We'll see. Rex has to win a couple for any of these theories to be proven.

I agree completely with all those who say Ryan's style works because it is who he is. But I also think to at least some extent his style works for this team in a way it might not work quite so well with others.

Timing is part of it. The Jets have just gone through a sequence of coaches and coaching styles, some with more success than others, but none who had quite his degree of success. We as fans have seen how the relative merits and differences of those styles have been some mix of successful and frustrating, but all without ultimate success. There were even people who were hopeful when Kotite came to the team, but his lunch pail deferential style sucked. One coach I will go even further back is Pete Carroll, who I was quite disappointed in, as his player's coach style did not work as well as I hoped. Parcells had great success, and I frankly do not share the negativity obout him that others have. I loved his caustic humor, but BP only made it so far, too. Groh was just a cypher by comparison. Herm amused until that got old, let the roster decline and then left under very obnoxious circumstances. Mangini came in hoping to be more business like and serious, what we thought the team needed, with the Belichik pedigree (which I always thought wsa oversold, but...), and that failed as well.

So we knew the tight lipped control freak didn't work. The cartoonish/buffoonish didn't work. The organizational cypher didn't work. THe snarly bully nearly did, but didn't.

Rex is none of those people. His style is totally refreshing compared to all who went before. A player's coach but an effective one.

    There's more, but that's a start.

of course it would have been a completely different article -- the Jets would have lost and thus maybe Rex wouldn't be as appealing if he didn't walk the talk. that in no way reflects anything negative about the content of the article, which you are clearly attempting to insinuate.

fuck, you guys are so sensitive that you can't realize how ridiculous you sound. realizing that the jets are as good as advertised now isn't jumping on the bandwagon. plenty of people thought we were the top team in the NFL at 9-2, but our finish certainly didn't validate that. the idea that someone has to believe the Jets are the best at all times, despite how they play, is f'ing asinine. The Jets earned the opinion people had that they weren't the best. now they are proving that they may be.

I agree. First some here spend half or more of their posts complaining the Jets get no respect. Now some people whether begrudgingly or not are acknowledging their success, and some post on and on about not wanting people to say good things.

I mostly only care about this stuff to the extent it motivates or discourages the players. Otherwise I couldn't care less what non-Jet fans think of the team.

What I want to know is...who was Bart Scotts first head coach?

I envy you Jet fans. I'm over here in San Diego, having to deal with freaking Norv boring Turner as our coach.

I initially started following you guys a while ago because of Sanchez, because of his USC ties, but man, Rex is the shit.

This team has grown on me, big time. The Jets victory made my day after the Colts and Pats games. The Jets even came through for me in a 5 team parlay last weekend...to bad Real Madrid didn't. One of the few non Jet fans that knew you guys were going to wreck some shit in NE.

Will be rooting very hard for you guys. Good luck.

    Yea.

Except now guess what...Our great defensive coordinator Rivera is gone. Gates and Rivers are getting older and lonelier(sp? lol) as LT, VJackson are out or heading out.

But at least we got to keep Norv.

Well, the good news for me is that there are strong rumors a stadium will be built in my county. The specific location would make the stadium walking distance for me.

How sweet would it be for him? God I would love that.

Talk about a huge indirect bitch slap to the Chargers organization.

Brees leaves and wins a ring, then LT leaves and wins a ring. That would be insane.

Sorry, I can be a little rough on my organization sometimes. Nothing but misery.

Insinuate what? You think that Collinsworth would of still had great things to talk about the Jets if we had lost? The only thing that is funny about the arcticle, is that you have Chris pretty much always putting them down all year and now it's good football when Rex talks smack. No big deal, stop anaylizing every word.

Parallels, I know. You guys have a title though.

The single greatest moment for me, as a fan...beating the Steelers in the early 90's in the AFC Championship game and going to the SuperBowl.

It's been all downhill since then.

Anyway, back to Rex. A mans man.

I would not have been the least bit surprised if they had fired Norv. All that talent on the roster. Putting Ryan aside, imagine what someone like Malarkey could do with the Chargers.

Hate to say it, but your team has lousy ownership.

And in due time we'll get a coach who takes things who takes things too far.

I am not following you. You think Collinsworth should have written an article that would have been the same whether the Jets won or lost to the Pats?

of course. everyone is supposed to think Rex Ryan is great regardless of whether he wins or loses. clearly the meaning of the article isn't that his personality is great for the NFL in conjunction with the fact that he delivers.

I think Rex is a great guy and a great coach. He's my favorite Jet head coach of all time by far and I've been watching since around 1976. He makes the game enjoyable for everybody - the fans and the players.

I still don't like the "Look at me" celebrations after plays, especially TDs. Holmes does it a LOT and it's annoying. In fact, when Holmes dropped that 3rd grade pass in the end-zone a few weeks ago, I think it was because he was already anticipating his celebration after the catch. It shows poor character and it's not sportsmanlike.

Having said that, almost every team does it. So it was pretty lame of Jim Nance to single out the Jets for their celebration in the end zone. Criticize the NFL or ESPN for glorifying the celebrations. Don't single out one team.

Did Nance see the Pats after they drubbed us 45-3? They were airplaning all over the fucking field.
