I'm not using record as a barometer. It's the roster turnover and direction of the team, which takes time to change and has clearly taken a turn for the better. He had to do much more than make the team better to not get fired; as soon as Holmgren was hired you knew he'd want to bring his own guy in.
He got fired because of the same problems he had with the Jets and the same problems that Josh McDaniels had in Denver. He's too much of a control freak who alienates players. He angered what few leaders the Browns actually had on the roster and traded away talent and draft picks to surround himself with the same guys that got him fired from the Jets. He had a detrimental relationship with George Kokinis which directly lead to Lerner bringing in Mike Holmgren to try and temper him. Top that off by averaging one win less per season than his predecessor and you have a pretty clear reason as to why Mangini was sent packing. Now it's time for Holmgren to bring in Marty Mornhinweg so he can get fired for the same reasons Brad Childress was fired in Minnesota. Indianapolis delenda est.
Holmgren was fired because Mangini fucked up the roster and they needed someone who wasn't a complete dipshit to run the front office. Indianapolis delenda est.
Yeah no shit, and as soon as he was hired, you knew he'd want to bring one of his boys in at the slightest sign of trouble.... Midway through the season things were looking good after they beat NO and NE, two Quarterback injuries later they're in a tailspin again. Name me one team that doesn't go into a tailspin after two QB injuries, leaving them with only Jake Delhomme.
I think Mangini would be an excellent head coach hire for Cincinnati. Mind you, I said "an excellent head coach hire," not an excellent head coach. Cincy's in utter need of a complete gutting. That's what Mangini does best. (Plus, he's obviously got AFC North experience). The Bengals could bring him in, give him complete control of the roster, stockpile a shitload of picks and high character JAGs when Mangini trades away every douche on the team, and then fire him a day after they secure the first pick in the 2012 draft.
You forgot about the part where he trades away draft picks for the high-character JAGs. Indianapolis delenda est.
Alright, I am over exaggerating a bit on the turd business. I just hate the guy. He was still a solid defensive minded coach, but there wasn't a line of NFL owners waiting to hire him afterward either. Like I said, you can't really compare them exactly... Belichick still had a solid resume behind him in the league after the Cleveland job. Mangini's, not so much. My point is that it isn't impossible to flame out at first and then work ones way back into the game.
Did anyone see this video? I don't know whether it's funny or sad.
He had to go. Holmgren couldn't sell him to the public for the third straight year. I really thought Mangini would be a special coach in this league especially if you look at what he did in his first year here.
