Well maybe not the Seahawks because I think they would have lost to the Eagles (Eagles would be the 3 and Seahawks would be the 6) but your suggestion is one that I've wanted the NFL to adopt for years after the NBA went to the seeding by record and record only route.
absolutely. even last week, the Jets had to go to Indy simply because New England was better than them both; but there is no reason why the Colts should have had the home game on the sole basis that they played in a weaker division than the Jets, who still ended up with a better record. teams should be seeded on their own merit, not penalized simply because a better team plays in their division.
Yeah, I have no problem with the first round being seeded based on division, but after that it should really be re-seeded according to record.
Bill Simmons suggested that #1 seeds be allowed to choose their opponent. It was very unfair this year that Atlanta had to face arguably the best team in the NFC, while Chicago got one of the worst teams in the NFL.
As retarded as this sounds at first glance reading that...it's actually a pretty cool idea. It would make the sport much more interesting and make for a better title game in most scenarios.
I now have a problem with the Wild Card round being seeded based on division championships. I do not believe the playoffs should be re-seeded after the Wild Card round. I don't like the system anymore. I think the top two seeds should go to the two best teams (by record) in the conference so long as they are not in the same division (by record the two best NFC teams were both from the South this season). You shouldn't get a bye if you don't win your division. The Falcons and Bears would have still been the 1 and 2 seeds. 3-6 would have looked like this- 3. Saints 4. Packers 5. Eagles 6. Seahawks Such a system would have forced teams like the Eagles, Jets, and Chiefs to actually try to win in Week 17. Of course, the Jets won anyway in Week 17. I'm not sure Tomlinson, Revis, Greene, and Cromartie would have sat out that game, however. I remember a time in the NFL when winning your division would not guarantee a home playoff game.
