Can we ever focused on what santonio brings to the table??????? Holmes doesn't even have a full season with sanchez....
What Santonio is supposed to bring to the table, the thing that's supposed to make him such a valuable weapon, is an ability to make big plays in crunch time. He's supposed to be that 'clutch' guy. But you aren't a 'clutch' guy if you can only be depended on to make that play half the time. If, in crunch time, you drop a pass that hits you in the hands that your team absolutely needs to have, you're not a clutch player. One play usually doesn't ruin a reputation, but usually one play doesn't make a reputation either, and Holmes' Mr. Clutch thing is built entirely on his one catch in the Super Bowl, with two plays this year to support it and a handful counting against. Holmes has made a couple big plays in some close games this season, but on the whole, he's kinda felt like just another guy to me, nothing like the Superbowl MVP that's almost always given with his name. Off the top of my head, I can remember probably four or five plays that stand out as terrible, terrible plays on his part, and only one or two that were great plays on his part. That slant he took for a win in OT against the Browns was a big one obviously. His big play in OT against Detroit was tremendous. The touchdown against the Texans wasn't really, Edwards had the huge catch to give the Jets a first down right by the goal line, and Sanchez put the ball right in Holmes' breadbasket, catching that ball isn't a great play, dropping it is a terrible one (as seen in Miami). So, on balance, in some big spots he's come up big, in some big spots he's come up small, and on the whole he hasn't produced terribly much, with too many drops and a whole lot of failed connections in the mix. I'm sure Holmes wants to be paid like a Superbowl MVP, and he just hasn't been that kind of player for the Jets. There's still time this year, but right now, based on what he's done on the field, if one guy has to go between Cromartie, Harris, Edwards, and Holmes, I gotta think its Holmes.
Do you guys not remember in the Super Bowl that he dropped the first pass and then caught that game winning TD on the next play? Granted they were both hard catches, but it's not like he's been 100% automatic his whole career.
this was holmes best year by far as far as being clutch. he made 3 big plays in 4 years as a steeler. yes in the super bowl he missed a easy catch right before the one he made he was one play away from being the goat and it was a easy perfect thrown ball. last year evenb though he had big numbers he was as much of a non factor as you could be. the first game of the year against the titans he was good and then never made a positive key play the rest of the year. he was the big reason in 2 losses. i laugh at his clutch tag the bonehead you see happens way more then the good. like i said this has been his best year by far. the funny thing is even those games he had huge catches in look what he did for the entire game until then nothing. if he actually showed up for all the game he wouldnt have made a big last second play. there is a reason the steelers dumped him for a 5th, a big reason
Some of the Holmes bashing during this thread has been more than just pathetic; they'e been sad. One of the greatest WR's of all time had plenty of drops in Terrell Owens. Look at Andre Johnson of the Texans... He's also made mistakes. We have a gifted athlete in Holes. He's an extremely talented WR, who's been a huge reason why the Jets EVEN made the playoffs to begin with. He also brings more than just playmaking ability to the team, he brings veteran leadership to the field for a young QB in Sanchez to develope with. But yet, we see threads like this about a true #1 WR talent, playing as our #2 WR? Beyond sad. Threads like this, have me wondering when we'll see a Jets fan bashing Revis during a thread for "allowing" Wayne to rack up a whopping 1 catch for 1 yard. Wouldn't shock me. Threads like this, has to be the perfect example on why you'll never see me post..let alone read a gameday thread.
I don't have a problem with him dropping a pass, even though that one was in a HUGE spot in the game and could have killed us. What he did on that punt return is FAR worse, because it was just completely stupid and there was no reason for it. He's going to bounce back though and have a big game this week, no question about it.
I just wait for Santonio's response to a poor performance. My hope is he really concentrates and plays, well, like the Santonio who won the SB for the Steelers or won the several games for the Jets this season.
More and more I find myself with a nervous stomach when he's running with the ball. Sorta like I do everytime Folk lines up for a kick.
i understand how santonio may rub people the wrong way with the way he's 1. portrayed by the media - and some of it he brings upon himself with his poor communication skills in front of the camera... 2. 'bad judgment' lapses - both in game and previous transgressions off the field 3. apparent arrogance with his first down celebration and maybe the plane and for some people, they can't look past that and wait for him to fail with a catch or what not... and then give a told you so, or complain about it... that's just the nature of fans... some embrace him... others don't. the punt return was boneheaded, but nothing resulted from it... the 3rd & 5 should have been caught, but he did have quite a few other nice catches as well... santonio and braylon (and cotch) have been instrumental this season in helping bring the team where it is... just enjoy the ride...
