It will almost certainly be Pool and Smith, but we'll probably see a lot of 3 safety formations with Lowery out there.
Lowery will be the 4th safety. Smith will be the nickel safety/sorta linebacker. He'll play closer to the LOS and blitz/cover RB's out of the backfield, etc.
Wrong- Smith will be the starting safety, the Strong Safety to be exact. Yes this position is normally closer the the LOS it's even described on Wikipedia that way. Lowery will see more action than Diggs, especially against Peyton and Diggs still a little banged up. If anything Diggs will just be out to blitz. Smith is the starter, it took over Jim's role and it's waiting for his return. (Nickel safety sorta LB)??? lol
smith can't keep up with fast players. luckily their receiving TE tamme isn't very fast at all. smith should be fine against him
I'd rather Smith be calling the plays though. Since the Colts run game is so weak I think we'll see 5 DB's out their at least, at all times.
I guarantee you that Eric Smith will be starting against the Colts. His knowledge of calling the coverages will be needed against the pretty much pass only Colts. He may scare you in coverage but Lowery has done nothing to show he can cover on a consistent basis. Besides we'll be rolling deep with DB's all game.
Why would any of you guys want E. Smith in there? Against the kind of O run by the Colts he'd be nearly useless... I hope to see a lot of Pool, Lowery and even Ihedigbo before I see Smith back there... PS Tamme isn't the most physical TE in the world so he shouldn't be that big of a problem to cover...
Let me make this clear: I am not suggesting that the Jets should do anything with intent to injure. So don't even go there. I am saying I'd like to see Smith starting and making Tamme and White pay dearly for going over the middle. Let them make a few ctaches. Then hit them, knock them into next week with LEGAL hits. The weak spot in our pass D is over the middle, has been all year. From Bess to Burleson, to NE and any team that has put points on us, it's always about the soft middle of our pass D. Neither Tamme or White are durable recievers. They have both missed time, White with concussion problems. Making them pay for going over the middle should disrupt their concentration, and if one of them gets knocked out of the game with legal hits, so be it. It's football. NFL receivers know there is, or should be a price to pay for going over the middle. If Tamme and White can be nuetralized, we can cover Garcon and Wayne with Cro and Revis. Smith knows how to lay big hits. He just has to do it without leading with his helmet or launching.
I think our DBs can minimize (but not totally eliminate) the damage wrought by Indy's deep threats. Got to respect Manning's skill. And we'll still have to find a way to keep slant and hitch patterns from costing us too much. We can't afford pass interference penalties; Cro has got to stop doing that shit. And he's gotten away with a lot of penalties, too. At least Ed "Hercules" Hochuli's crew won't be officiating. I do NOT see Indy reaching 100 yards rushing... combined. Hell no. I agree with you in theory. But Lowery has made more big plays, and Smith has consistently been prone to lapses in decision-making and concentration. Still a toss up, if you ask me, coverage wise. Let me ask you this... if Woody starts (and it appears that he will be), how do you see his match-up with Mathis or Freeney turning out? It stands to reason his run blocking will be better than his pass blocking. Let's win this game! :jets:
Props to the posters who believed in Smith and din't lose faith in him. He and Pool played very well.
I said it in the fourth quarter of that game that E. Smith had one hell of a game. Props to him for coming back from an injury and playing fantastic. I for one wanted more Lowery, I'll eat that crow. Brodney Pool began the Colts game on fire and Smith cleaned up the second half. Good all around play minus the one play.
