Joining the five first-year-eligible players are nine other modern-era players and one contributor.

A finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent to be elected.

    » Chris Doleman, DE/LB (1985-1993, 1999 Minnesota Vikings, 1994-95 Atlanta Falcons, 1996-98 San Francisco 49ers)

    » Charles Haley, DE/LB (1986-1991, 1999 San Francisco 49ers, 1992-96 Dallas Cowboys)

» *Chris Hanburger, LB (1965-78 Washington Redskins)

» Cortez Kennedy, DT (1990-2000 Seattle Seahawks)

» Curtis Martin, RB (1995-97 New England Patriots, 1998-2005 New York Jets)

I've never been to Canton, but I think if Martin gets in this year, I may try to make the trip for his induction.

That was my thinking, I'm not sure how mnay more NYJ HOFers I'll ever get a chance to see and as a Mets fan we don't seem to have too many of them either.

I guess finishing 5th all time in rushing isn't good enough for you.....

Not sure why some don't think Bettis is a hall of famer. Flew under the radar?

Shannon Sharpe deserves to be in, the guy was a phenomenal TE AND he has 3 rings.

Bettis is a HOFer, he has the stats, a ring, durability, and was almost a house-hold name during his prime.

I WILL be pissed if he gets in ahead of C Martin, though.

He is not a first ballot HOF to me. Faulk and Martin were both way better. I know he is 5th all time in rushing, so I guess thats good enough to make it, but how he went out was pathetic. I guess that has always rubbed me the wrong way. He was terrible, the team was not that good, and the NFL wanted the bus to go out a champ at his home in Detroit. It was literally the worst I have seen the NFL.

I always thought retiring on top was THE best way to go out, as opposed to fading away as a JAG ala Emmitt.

Bettis had a career similar to Curtis in the sense that he was never THE premier back of his generation at any point but he was always in the conversation. Though he was probably a bit more visible due to the Steelers' postseason success.

The power back of his generation. 5th all time rushing. A superbowl ring. A big personality to back up his big stats. Sure fire hall of famer. Maybe not year one, but he'll be in there.

Please stop mentioning his Super Bowl ring folks. Its like you guys didn't even watch that game or something. For Bettis, that season even. My point is, he should not get in before Martin. It would be sickening. Could happen too because he was a Steeler. Maybe he is a HOF, but it is borderline. To me at least.

Bettis: 13 seasons, 13,622 yards. Never over 1,000 yards in his final 4 years.

Martin: 11 seasons, 14,101 yards. Over 1,000 yards EVERY Season but his last, including 1,697 in 2004 to lead the NFL.

The two are not close. Bettis' ring annoys me so much though cause he was worthless. Its like if Gholston gets one this year.
