Sorry, could/too lazy to find the other thread on this topic. Sounds like he'd be open to it (surprisingly), but it probably won't be possible. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2011/01/07/2011-01-07_rex_ryan_says_jets_have_place_for_brother_rob_ryan_if_he_doesnt_become_head_coac.html Rex Ryan says Jets have place for brother Rob Ryan if he doesn't become head coach, leaves Browns There could be a double dose of the Ryan brothers on the Jets' coaching staff next season. Rex Ryan tried to hire his twin brother Rob when he got the Jets' job two years ago, but Eric Mangini had hired him as the Browns defensive coordinator before the Jets offered their head coaching job to Rex. When Rex asked the Browns to release his brother, Mangini replied, "Give me a break, he's already here," Rex Ryan said Thursday. "I told him blood was thicker than water. They were not going to lose him." But now that the Browns have fired Mangini, Rob Ryan could be available. He will be interviewed for the Carolina Panthers head coach opening, and Rex Ryan is optimistic his brother will get a job as a head coach or defensive coordinator. But he's got a safe and comfortable place to land if nothing is attractive. "Without question, that would be an amazing opportunity for us if we could bring my brother in here," Ryan told the Daily News Thursday. "You want to surround yourself with as many good coaches as you can. We are fortunate here. We've got a lot of good coaches. Would I like to add my brother? Of course." Ryan called Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine "an unbelievable coach," so Rob Ryan would not get that job, Rex said. "Rob has never really been in this system anyway," Rex said. So what role would he have? "We would try to come up with something," he said. "If that opportunity was out there, I think the first guy that would come to me and want to do that would be (GM Mike) Tannenbaum and even (Jets owner) Woody (Johnson). I don't think we will have that opportunity. He will be at least a coordinator in this league, if not a head coach. I'm not the only one who recognized the guy is a great coach." Rex and Rob last worked together on their father Buddy's staff with the Arizona Cardinals in 1994 and '95. Rob Ryan reportedly is still under contract to the Browns, which means if the new head coach wants to keep him, Cleveland could prevent him from taking anything that is not a head coaching job. It'll never happen, but good grief, if they could keep Pettine as DC and add Rob Ryan to the mix somewhere on defense? It would be worth it just to see Hard Knocks 2.
Definitely, or a head coach somewhere. Minimal if any chance he ends up in NY, but I was just surprised Rex would even consider it.
sounds like Rex is basically telling his brother that if he can't find ANYTHING, he can come to the Jets as a last resort...and Rex will find a place for him on his staff.
Adding Rob Ryan to the staff would be amazing. Just imagine what the press conferences would sound like. Indianapolis delenda est.
Well, I dont see Rob getting a HC job this year, so it will come down to whether he wants to go somewhere and be a DC or whether he wants to come to the Jets. If I am Rob, I might go to the Jets, build a dominant defense with Rex (all they need is 2 new OLB's, a DE, and another safety) and then he will be guaranteed a HC job next year. Also, just thinking off the top of my head, where is he going to be a DC next year? The new Browns coach might want his own people, and a lot of other teams are set at DC, and I am not sure he would want to be a DC of a bad team with a coach he doesn't know.
If we can get 2 decent LB, another safety we will be hott. We really need to resign Harris and Cromartie if we want to make an unstoppable defense.
With Cable out, the Guy Rex allegedly wanted should be available.... Best hope.... Jets get to at least AFCCG, better Win SB, Offense scores 90+ points in 3 games. Schotty to Miami.
I told you guys this. If you've been watching Rex's press conferences this year (in particular the ones surrounding the Browns game) he's said the same thing and also added that he's put in for Rob Ryan last year AND this year with the Browns. But was denied. If Rob doesn't get an offer anywhere and the Browns don't want him I definitely think he'll end up with the Jets.
itll never happen rob ryan will get chances elsewhere rather then being forced to be a assistant position coach on the jets staff
I really don't see what's so great about Pettine. We all know that Rex controls everything about that defense, having a guy like Pettine is basically just having someone who can relay Rex's message when he's not standing there. I'd imagine someone who is coming from a different place can add more than a yes man. A lot of this is just based on my assumptions, but I guess I just can't understand how this paper champion defense has such bad stretches. It makes sense that it happens because we only have one thought process going on, and if that doesn't work we're just screwed. To have someone who has a different style (though slightly with Rob) would add a ton of versatility.
