I went back to look at how often the Jets have made back-to-back playoff appearances. This is only the 5th time this has happened (we've never made it 3 consecutive years). What I found interesting though was that this is the first time in which the second of the 2 playoff seasons the Jets finished with a higher record than the previous season. I guess you can't read too much into this, but maybe it means that the team is on the upswing (despite the flaws). Since I'm often viewed as a darksider (I don't think I am, really), I figured I'd throw out this piece of positive trivia.
First time since 98 Jets clinched a playoff berth before the last week of the season lol Better hope we land a legit pass rusher this off season or theres no chance @ a 3rd
You may not be a darksider but I am shocked that this thread didn't contain a negative factoid since this is within 24 hours of a Jets loss. We have a coach that has changed the culture and expectation right under the nose of the darksiders. We are no longer seeing people pissed because the Jets are 4-12 a year after making the playoffs. We are seeing people pissed off because they expected a superbowl and may not get it. This team is certainly on the upswing and will be competitive as long as Rex is around.
The last time was 2001/2002....though 2001's record was better, anyone who was a fan then knows the 2002 team was MUCH better. Man, reminiscing...I miss 2002. What an amazing year....
I'm surprised it happened 5 times. It's certainly been awhile. We have to remember Rex is a second year head coach. It takes time especially for a guy like Rex who sometimes goes with his heart over his brain when deciding what to do. He will get the game management down that stuff comes with experience. He seems to have a good grip on the other things so let's not run the guy out of town before he can accomplish what he's capable of. Good job to get us in two years and Im sure we would all love to see this team become consistent post season participants during the Rex/Sanchez era.
I have a feeling that as long as we have Rex Ryan and a healthy Sanchez, we will always be in the playoffs.
We need to keep rolling. If Sanchez can get more consistent if our defense gets a pass rusher(s) we can get to the playoffs yearly. Its no easy task tho.
Cool stat for sure! This team will be good for years to come too. Sanchez will only get better. Add pieces to the D, keep the Oline in tact, etc. The future is bright for Gang Green, but they still have unfinished buisness this year.
I had a feeling around Thanksgiving that the Jets might get the #1 seed in the AFC and lose in their first game, ala 2008 Giants, 2006 Colts, etc. How disappointing would that have been in retrospect? Since I've been a fan, the Jets have never lost to a lower seeded team in the playoffs and it won't happen this year.
In 2002, the Jets lost at Chicago in week 16 to fall to 8-7. Most Jets season ticket holders did not buy playoff tickets after that loss. The Jets went on the beat GB in week 17 on that crazy day when NE came from 10 down late to beat Miami in OT and the Jets won the division and made the playoffs. A loss in week 16 is not the end of the world.
Jets actually lost to Chicago in week 15 to fall to 7-7 similarly to how they lost to Atlanta in week 15 last year to fall to 7-7 with no one giving them a chance from that point. In 2002 the Jets beat the Patriots week 16 and the Packers week 17 and received a lot of help in those 2 weeks to ultimately dig out of a 2-5 hole and win the division.
It's definitely hard to complain. They surely aren't great yet, but I'd agree they're on the upswing.
