In the Super Bowl era only 7 QBs have led their teams to back to back playoffs in the first 2 seasons of their career. Dan Marino 1983 - 1984 MIA John Elway 1983 - 1984 DEN Bernie Kosar 1985 - 1986 CLE Shaun King 1999 - 2000 TAM Ben Roethlisberger 2004 - 2005 PIT Joe Flacco 2008 - 2009 BAL Mark Sanchez 2009 - 2010 NYJ I didn't include Pat Haden because he played one season in the WFL
I didn't say it meant anything, but it's interesting that only 7 players in the SB era have led their teams to the playoffs in their first 2 seasons in the league.
Maybe it does not mean anything, but it is interesting. At least it is interesting to some of us, especially those of us who like historical NFL tidbits.
3 shaun king was a backup for tampa in 2002 and flacco is only in his 3rd year, so you can't really count him as ringless
Sanchez hasn't even had a chance yet in his 2nd year, and Flacco is only in his 3rd year. I think it's more fair to say 2/5 with a fair chance have a ring, which isn't a bad percentage.
heres some interesting info on a 2nd year QB: Josh F*cking Freeman was 21 for 26 with 5 tds dont our weapons and oline trump tampa's? when the hell is Marc gonna have a game like that? i want answers
King was the only one who peaked in year two. He didn't start any games in his 3rd season and only started 3 games in total beyond his second season. Marino was the only QB to win against the Bears in 1985. In Elway's third year he directed the Broncos to a record of 11-5 which was not good enough to qualify for the playoffs that year. In his third year, Kosar took the Browns to the conference title game. Roethlisberger won a Super Bowl in his third year. Finally, Flacco will be in the playoffs for a third straight year.
Sanchez when his confidence is up is an amazing quarterback. It seems though he gets rattled very easily.. at least from the way his face looks
I also like Freeman more than I like Sanchez, but what are we going to do short of convert to Tampa Bay fans?
im hard on him. Im not trying to be overly pessimistic. I think in the end it really lies more on the coaching staff. It hurts to watch other young QBs especially ones drafted recently succeed in passing the ball
I believe that Sanchez is the only one in that group that didn't play his senior year in College- he drafted as Junior. He's about the same age as all of the Rookie QB's in the league this year, and he has an extra year of NFL experience that they don't.
I don't know if anyone remembers or not, but I LOVED Flacco going into the 2008 NFL Draft I like Freeman too, but I am really happy with Sanchez
Sanchez is 14 months older than Freeman and 15 months older than Matt Stafford. Those are the two QBs he will be compared to perhaps more than any other QBs for most of his career. QBs usually get compared to others from their draft class. Ages during their 2nd NFL season for QBs mentioned anywhere in this thread to this point- 22- Matt Stafford, Josh Freeman 23- Matt Cavanaugh, Dan Marino, Bernie Kosar, Shaun King, Ben Roethlisberger 24- Pat Haden, John Elway, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez
