Inside Dish: Jets to reduce Martin's workload By SN correspondents - SportingNews The Jets aren't saying so publicly, but look for them to drastically reduce the workload of 33-year-old RB Curtis Martin. Former coach Herm Edwards was fiercely loyal to Martin--too loyal--even though he showed signs of slowing down last season. New coach Eric Mangini respects the venerable veteran, but he will have no qualms about sitting Martin for long stretches if it helps the team. Martin could be a new version of Marcus Allen, a premier back who steps into a part-time role and extends his career. . . . Gratuitous Link
As long as he's healthy and producing he'll get the most carries, I did expect the load to be reduced before these articles came out so there's nothing out of the ordinary in them. He's old for a RB(has been for a few years) but he still has some gas left in the tank as long as he is healthy but we have a nice group of RBs and the carries will be spread out a little more but I expect Curtis to still get the most carries.
to me this is just the media looking to milk a story out of Mangini and the new tight lipped office. we all knew coming off a knee surgery at 33 hes not going to be the workload back hes been, especially with the drafting of washington. theyre going to look for people like washington and blaylock to catch out the backfield and go offtackle or send them in some counters to hit some big runs. i think thattl be 40 % of the running the other 60% im guessing will be martin/houston pounding the ball with occassional runs over 10 yds.
When was Marcus Allen NOT in that role? I think this could be good, and it will certainly benefit Martin. I'm excited about Leon Washington and Cedric Houston, and maybe Blaylock will step up. I can't wait to see how this all shakes out. -X-
This doesn't surprise me. I mean, how on earth could we expect him to keep the same workload, when he didn't even run the Santa Monica steps this year, and Cannizzaro hasn't run the "ageless-wonder-in-the-best-shape-of-his-career-and-on-a-mission" story yet?
When you are in the kind of shape Martin is you don't need to run the steps anymore. This years off season regime is riding the elevator up to the spa to get a message.
Not surprising that this is what will end up happening. If anything this should have been done last year. Fantasy wise this will put to rest any talk about drafting a jet rb. RBBC is death fantasy wise.
He'll get the majority of the carries, if he stays healthy. Leon probably needs time to gain some weight and get used to the speed of the pro game, and in the meanwhile Blaylock and Houston both offer a different skill set to the running game. My hope is that Houston gets plenty of work, with our line relatively young we could use a move-the-pile type back with some success this year.
This should have been clear with the batch of young talent we have to assess on our team. However, I wouldn't write off Martin that quickly. Last season he was hurt and, well...behind our line. I'm sure Parcells told Mangini "you've got one of the most valuable RB's on your roster," in one of their meetings.
I wouldn't want you to sit in that big Captains chair all day catching rays, putting down a few cold beers and smoking Cubans without at least hooking one.
Never under estimate curtis. Sure its more like they he wont get the more then 50% of carries but if had 1100-1200 yards and 5-7 td's I wouldnt be suprised
Catch and release, baby. Or, I could have you stuffed and mounted. What're your thoughts on Thai . . . for both?
Unfortunately, besides Martin, I believe we have 3 decent backs but none of them are going to be able to be a real starter. CMart will probably get a majority of the carries.
