You're right, we were in zone for a majority of the game. Once Brady softened the zone coverage, they were able to break out good runs also. Woodhead is quick, but there is no way he should have gotten 50 yards. The angles that guys were taking to him were redonkulous! We need a fish fry this weekend to get this taste out of my mouth.
because that is how the browns played the Pats -- rushing 2 dropping 9...mixing up what was falling into coverage. He out planned himself and went away from what he likes to do most - man up and pressure.
Interestingly, this is also what happened in the 1st Half of the Divisional Playoff game vs SD last year. In a post-game interview, Rhodes said the players implored the coaches to switch to man-coverage; they returned to it in the 2nd Half, and that's when the D started causing SD's Offense problems and came up with stops.
i couldn't understand that eiether. i mean we would back them into 3rd and long and then play zone 3 man rush and let him get a 1st down. horrible playcalling. just horrible. Everyone knows elite QBs will kill a zone
Didn't you see Revis running back and forth to try and man Welker? The Pats were moving these guys all over the place. Welker was even lining up in the backfield sometimes. I thought they played alot of man. Most of the Pats big plays came off of rubs (crossing patterns) that gave the receiver a step on the defender. Branch's TD was man against Cromartie, Welker's TD was man, and Tate's TD was man coverage.
It doesn't matter what coverage we play, if we can't get to the QB we're fcked. We can't match up against the Pats, they have too many weapons and Brady uses them all to perfection. Revis can only cover one guy, Cro can't cover Branch apparently and no one on our team can cover a good TE. We need a freaking pass rusher more than anything, without one, the only way we get to teh SB is if someone else knocks out NE.
i don't get why they didn't just play up on the little smurf receivers and just beat the hell out of them for the 5 yards...destroy all the timing. Don't allow any free releases to them..while you do that send in a safety or LB on a blitz up the gut.
They aren't superhuman; we covered them just fine in Week 2. If you're saying that we just didn't have "it" last night, then I'll agree. But we are capable of covering them.
Curious, did you notice all the bunch formations, players in motion and/or coming out of the backfield? It's rather difficult to hit that which you can't.......
i saw the bunch formations...bunch of bullshit picks being used..play the guys with an inside line and force them out...you have to knock some guys down. Pick a guy and take one out of each pattern. You have to try something...without Jenkins the pass rush really is a hindrance. The Ravens play physical but they can get pressure without bringing up cover guys. That is why the Pats don't want to see Balt in the playoffs.
Com'on man... when you get bunch formations like that you at least have to chuck the guy who crosses your face.. Its inside 5 yards and your allowed to get your hands on receivers... there wasn't even an attempt most of the night to disrupt the flow of the short passing game...
yeah -- i hate that play..i think they should start calling that offensive pass interference. The offensive player has such an advantage already to mix in pick plays is a joke.
That was week 2... that was a completely different offense. Now Brady is comfortable with those TEs, Welker is feeling better, Woodhead is adding another dimension.... we're fcked dude, we can't cover this offense, we are simply not built for it. You need LBers and / or Safeties that can cover TEs, and we simply do not have this. I think BT is our best coverage LBer and after that there's a HUGE drop off. Safety wise well, that's not even open for debate, E. Smith is pure garbage in pass coverage and B. Pool.. well I don't know, is he even on the team anymore? ONLY way we get past the Pats in the playoffs is if someone else knocks them out for us.
Hey I didn't say the Jets made an effort but the Pats used a lot of formations where typically the Jets (Revis) that like to jam the line couldn't. Belichick's defense's made a living jamming at the line. They used that method to defeat Peyton a ton of times and the Rams years ago. It would stand to reason he would know how to combat that technique better than anyone.
Because of the favorable matchups for NE in the slot and at TE. The Jets don't have the LBs, the safeties or the corners after Revis and Cro to matchup well. I think Cro might have gotten exploited more by playing man more. It is those gnat recievers that give big corners the most trouble.
I agree with the general sentiments here. Revis literally was never thrown at. Other than that, there's not really anybody that can guard ANY of Branch, Welker, Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Woodhead one-on-one. That's just asking to be picked apart, because Brady can find man coverage and get the ball out pretty much instantly.
nfl.com actually has a playbook video up showing a few times where Brady wrecked man coverage for big plays. Some screens, the pass where woodhead wound up wide open (and revis ended up covering no one), Branch on Cro 1 on 1, branch's TD on 4th and 3, etc. Interesting to see Brady/BB give respect to Revis in a lot of playcalls (made intentionally to get him out of plays)..very likely why he was so successful.
