Wilson has a long wingspan and put up 23 reps at the combine....which is not normal for a corner with long arms. Haden was a top 10 pick, Kareem Jackson and Devin McCourty are on the 2 worst Pass D's in the league. McCourty is ahead of him now....just like Steve Slaton was ahead of Chris Johnson his rookie year. ...and before anyone brings up interceptions, don't when evaluating corners.
I think you are a little short-sighted here. Yes, for established corners you don't use interceptions to evaluate them. But I think it is a different story for rookie corners. Inevitably offensive coordinators and QBs will try to pick on the rookie corner, giving him more opportunities to make the Int. If you look at McCourty the last 6 or 7 weeks he has really come into his own, and thats not only in ints but also in general coverage. I know last week against the Lions he held receivers on his side of the field to two receptions for 13 yards (with 7 passes defensed I believe) and 2 interceptions. I am not sure about the exact stats this week, but I believe it was a pretty shut down night for him all around. The truth is that McCourty is developing into a shut down corner (and no I'm not saying hes better than Revis, I'm not that stupid) and opposing QBs will start to stay away from him.
Yeah, and Danny Woodhead stands at 5 foot 9 inches too, right? Come on... You can see how much smaller this kid is just by watching the game, seeing him get thrown around like a rag doll. I have not seen him look remotely close in size to anyone except maybe someone like Danny Woodhead. Kdub is undersized at the position.
I honestly haven't noticed. If he's listed as heavier and shorter, then how the fk is he being "tossed around" while the others aren't? Wouldn't that make him a sturdier base? Basically you're telling me the listed heights and weights are a lie for Wilson but accurate for the other two. Whatever.
My post was just to say that things can change. I'm not saying Wilson will be better than McCourty, he's shown much more and is definitely going to be great for a long time, but Wilson can be just as good. I'm not saying he'd look worse than Wilson, but McCourty would probably look a little more exposed if he had Revis and Cromartie on the field with him.
That is not what I got from this quote: that has implications far beyond your explanation above. you said the mccourty/wilson situation is just like chris johnson/slaton. How can you not be implying anything by that statement? Additionally, you can only perform within your circumstances, and McCourty certainly has done that. If Wilson had been showing anything to the coaches, there were plenty of Patriots receivers beyond the ones being covered by Revis and Cromartie last night involved in the game to be covered.
I didn't say that Wilson or McCourty will be better than each other....as of now Devin gets the obvious nod but who knows what will happen in the next 3 years. That's all I was implying. The analogy was just an example, I wasn't trying to use it to say what WILL happen, just that it can. They will always be compared being in the same division and 2 picks apart, but they are in completely different situations right now.
Yeah, but you could also say that Sanchez will be better than Brady, but we all know thats a stupid assertion to make (and thats just an example). Right now there is all the evidence in the world to conclude that McCourty will be a shutdown corner (and he has been for the last 7 games in his rookie campaign) and none to conclude that Wilson will be. You also seem to be backtracking from your initial comments that interceptions are not a stat to be looked at in evaluating a cornerback (that implies that McCourty's ints are not helpful in evaluating him). You have been giving him no respect for weeks without any basis, and now you said that you are just saying that McCourty is great but Wilson could be better in the future. Thats not the point you originally set out to make.
Here's the thing I think most vocal K-Dub supporters want to point out. It's unfair to compare Wilson to Haden or McCourty because both are the best cornerbacks on their respective teams. Therefore, as a quarterback, you're better served picking on Wright or Wilhite than you are Haden or McCourty. K-Dub, at nickel, would be the worst cornerback on the field, so quarterbacks would pick on him ahead of Cromartie or Revis, naturally. I get that. I do. But my problem is we didn't draft Wilson for depth or for the future. We didn't draft him for a project. We drafted him to play nickelback in 2010 because we had a gaping hole there. The gaping hole has beaten Wilson out for the job. Yes, Wilson will improve. He has to, by default. I've seen some quality run support and a couple of decent pass break-ups, but he can't play cornerback against NFL wide receivers this year and he looks absolutely terrified fielding punts. I'm not going to call him a bust because I'm not retarded. But that 29th pick was about getting us to Super Bowl in 2010. In that regard, simply put... we missed.
How? The season's not over. The playoffs haven't started yet. We don't know who will be playing for the Lombardi trophy. This entire off-season was about getting us to the Super Bowl. ...so if we fail, every single move we made was a "miss". Simply put, the post is premature.
Much like their wives anticipated satisfaction  What happens when we smoke Miami, and Chicago beats Ne, then We win out?
I don't think that's accurate. Jason Taylor has helped us win some games. LaDainian Tomlinson and Santonio Holmes have helped us win a lot of games. There's no reasonable way you can call those moves "misses." Wilson, on the other hand, hasn't helped us win anything this year. It's December. Now, I'd love it if K-Dub turned on the juice around Christmas and started producing, but that's not the way things are trending. The man's going to need a full off-season to improve, which is true of most young NFL players. He can still develop into an effective corner; he can possibly develop into a top-notch corner. But that's not why he was drafted. He was drafted to help stop Joe Flacco and Chad Henne and Tom Brady and Colt McCoy and Matt Stafford and Brett Favre and Matt Schaub from exploiting our nickelback. He hasn't done that. There's nothing premature about that assessment.
Oh hey, I'm no darksider. We're more than alive and I still think we've got a great shot at taking it all. All I'm saying is that Kyle Wilson has been a minimal part of that success. Quite frankly (this is going to piss some people off) Vernon Gholston has contributed more to our success this year than Kyle Wilson has.
There was a touch of sarcasm in my post. ...but I'd also like to point out that you're blaming a dimeback for us not winning a Super Bowl that is months away.
