There's going to be a huge amount of pressure to at least match the 4 wins of last year if not improve by a win or two. Going 3-13 would put this regime on the cusp of a 2 year reign and out with more experienced heads brought in if they can't get things under control in 2007. I think the single biggest misconception about the Jets right now is that the new guys are playing with a free year. Nothing is free.
This doesnt bother me as much as havung a revamped OL with 2 rookies on it. Regardless of how Penny does in traing camp, I think they would be best suited to let Bolly start the first couple of games or at least till the OL shows them they can protect our QB. He is mobile and durable giving him the best chance out there.
Hey hey Buttle, how goes the battle dude? I come here everyday, but rarely does anything provoke me to post.
my take - The Coaching Staff loves Clemens...the trade up to get him in the draft and his camp work is proof. However, would it be the best thing to start this guy as a rookie? Behind an Oline with two rookie starters? My guess is Clemens will sit to start the season. If things get out of hand, he may become the starter by the 2nd half of the year. If not he'll see spot duty at best. Personally, I like everything I've heard about him - but I want to see for myself in Camp and in the Pre Season.
I tend to disagree. If you look back on history regarding OLinemen, almost all of the greats start as rookies from day 1. Personally, I feel as though coaching and the QB position take much more time to develop than a position on the OL. I feel that D'Brick and Mangold will be perfectly fine, especially with veterans like Kendall, Moore, Jones, and Clement playing next to them.
It would be in the Jets best interest to let Clemens sit at least 6 games until the o-line learns to play together. Why rush the kid and risk him getting hurt so we can be posting about the qb they have to draft next year.
Barring injury in the preseason, I think Brooks will be cut before the season. Again, barring injury, I think you'll see Chad & Ramsey - the opposite of your guess - we'll have to wait & see.
I would like to see the new offense gell a little before throwing a new QB in there. There are 2 rookie OLinemen starting, who is the starting RB, FB, TE; I would like to see these parts start to work together as a unit before Clemens becomes the next David Carr back there. It's like he is a goat being blocked by a curtain in a lion pen - he has no protection in Houston. I would feel better if the new parts, especially DBrick and Mangold, show their stuff successfully before Clemens takes the starting position.
Does anyone else feel bad for brooks, hes a long shot to make the team even after he showed he can be a servicable backup in the league last year. I for one am rooting for brooks to beat out ramsey.
As much as I like Clemens potential, under zero circumstances do I want to see him starting the season as the #1 QB. I think there is just too much for a QB to learn for him to be ready week 1. He would also be behind an OL with rookies (albiet very talented ones) at LT and C will likely get a QB beat up early on.
KC is going to sit for at least a year unless Chad is done and Ramsey is a flop -- which sadly could be the case. We drafted KC becuase even if Chad is back he is no young puppy anymore. Ramsey is garbage, Chad wil start, KC will sit and learn for year or so as it should be.
I look at it this way. Ramsey has one year left on his contract and I am sure he will be gone after this year. Bolly will cost alot less to keep and from what I've read so far, is playing better in camp. It sounds like Penny and Clemens are the front runners, Bolly is solid and Ramsey is struggling. If that continues through preseason, I think Bolly stays.
Absolutely right mate i cant believe people are thinking about starting clemens at all this year. Its what always happens, the fans call for him to start then when he does bad hes booed at and insulted, but he cant help it cause hes a rookie. I was even worried about Mangini trying to 'teach' Brian but still hoping for the best when the season does start.
We are in the era of the salary cap. Chances are Mangini has 4 to 5 years to prove he can take this team a long way. High priced rookies can't rot on the bench for a year or two when they are relatively speaking affordable. If you do that and they prove themselves in the walk year it just ends up setting the program back. If Clemens is the real deal we should give him plenty of snaps and he should start at some point this year. That way if he starts showing he is a big time QB sometime next year we can extend him early when we still have some leverage.
He'll get 4-5 years if he has 1-2 good years in there, if the team isn't making progress he won't last that long.
