I think that right now he's at best a league average DE. He's not the weak link, but he's also an impending UFA. If the Jets are trying to scrounge up every last penny and they can swap Ellis out for someone who does the same job for cheaper, they'll do it. If free agent negotiations happened in a vacuum, I'd agree with you. But who's to say that some team looking for veteran leadership on the line doesn't offer Ellis more than he's worth--do you really think that he'd accept less money to stay in New York? Again, my point is merely that the Jets have a lot of roster flexibility. They need to keep Harris and one of Holmes/Edwards (preferably Holmes, but he'll be tougher to re-sign.) Ellis could easily end up the odd man out if the Jets are looking for a little dough.
Guys we need to keep: David Harris Antonio Cromartie Santonio Holmes Braylon Edwards Out of the guys above Braylon is the one who should be worried. 2nd Tier We will keep: Brodney Pool James Ihedigbo Nick Folk Wayne Hunter Robert Turner Pool might be the least likely to be resigned and Ihedigbo might be signed away from us. Lastly I believe Mark Brunell was signed to a two year deal or at least an option on a 2nd.
Given what i've seen thus far this season....I wouldn't shed a tear if we let Brodney Pool walk after this season. I thought he'd have a bigger impact....but he hasn't really done anything spectacular.
Without a new CBA in place, any discussion is a complete waste of time as we don't know what parameters we'll be operating under. Relax man and enjoy the run..
Everything about the 2011 CBA is up in the air so we can only speculate and base the upcoming CBA on past history. I would assume the cap would rise a bit especially if they are going to force an 18 game season - which personally I think sucks, but I digress.... In any event, based on that speculation, we need to keep all 3 WRs on this team. Homes, Edwards, Cotch, plus LT & Keller as catching options is sick. LT will be around another year based on his contract and hopefully continues to develop Greene's catching ability, which seems to be improving. Edwards, in my opinion, has definitely earned a spot on this roster. He's made some awesome catches and has been the go to guy for Mark for a majority of his passing yards. Holmes, is an obvious keeper. Cotch is a fan favorite, a stud WR, and would be a 1st or 2nd on most teams in the NFL. Outside of the Green Bay debacle, he's had the best hands in NFL for the last couple years and he's a sideline magician. If Sanchez is going to be great, not good, you need great WRs. All three of these guys are great WRs and are young enough to keep playing for 7 - 10 years. We've already seen how good Mark is. But he needs the players at the other end of the ball to be great. PManning played with the precision of a neural surgeon against us in the AFCCG. But if guys like Collie or Clark drop a pass or two, Jets win. If Mark grows into being as accurate as Peyton is, but has Tedd Ginn for a receiver - what are his chances of leading this team to a Super Bowl? ALL 3 WRs are a must to retain for the following seasons.
I don't wanna talk about the offseason, not because I'm enjoying this run too much to discuss the future but because I'm in denial. Logic says we're gonna lose a very good impact player and that's a possibility I'm not interested in entertaining that right now.
Not necessarily... His cap figures will be (approximately) of 16.5, 14 and 8 for the next three years... maybe he agrees to make them 13, 13 an 12.5 to have some $$$ to re-sign his WRs... maybe with a bigger chunk paid up front as a bonus. There are many ways to make this a good deal for both Sanchez & the Jets without adding money.
That said it's very hard to specualte about the off-season because 1) Will there be cap? 2) IF there is a cap (which I think will happen) how much will it be (right now it's 60% of the NFL total income)? 3) How much will an 18 game season influence the cap? 4) Will some rules change (how bonus are counted, guaranteed money, etc)? 5) Will there be rules that allow teams a year or two to adapt to the new financial side of the CBA, however it may be structured? As of now it's equally probable that we re-sign everyone or that a player or two leaves the Jets... it also depends on how far we go this year imo. When the structure of the "new" NFL will be clearer I'll have a more educated opinion.
I dont see the Jets not resigning Cromartie. We gave up a second round pick for him. I can't see us giving up a second rounder for a rental.
Harris will get paid big... I'm expecting a contract similar to Scott's. Holmes & Edwards are proving to be very important for Sanchez. I love both and I hope we keep both... however if we HAVE to let one of them go I say goodbye Edwards... his skills are easier to replace and he's not as good a team-mate as Holmes (though he is a good guy). Ellis imo should be cut and re-signed to a more reasonable 2 year deal... something along the lines of 1 mill guaranteed next year and 1 mill not guaranteed in 2012. I'm not sure what we can do with Cromartie. On one side we just invested a 2nd/3rd rd pick in him and he is playing well, on the other we have Wilson waiting in his wings and he's going to demand a pretty big contract (gotta feed the kids). hope he signs for around 4-5 mill per year. - - - - - - - - - - - - - B. Smith is interesting because I could see some team offering him more than we can. I think a reasonable contract would be of around 1.5-2 mill per year. Goodbye Pool... Coleman should sign for what he's making right now.. around 0.75-1 mill. But I'm not going to kill myself if he leaves (As long as Cro stays). Ihedigbo is a valuable ST player + blitzer... around 1 mill is plenty enough. Folk should be in the 1 mill department too... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If we let Woody go we should keep Hunter as a backup hoping Ducasse wins the job. If Woody stays goodbye Hunter! Turner is so valuable as a backup... he should earn around 1 mill with harsh penalties for every time he commits a personal foul penalty . Not sure we'll be able to keep him... he might be offered to start some place else but maybe we can tag him. E. Smith's situation is similar to Ihedigbo but he sees more time on the D so maybe around 1.2 mill. Clemens either gets the vet minimum or he goes somewhere to try and start in this league. If Schotty gets a HC gig I could see him following him. Brunell will probably retire... at least I hope so... love having him as a backup this year but he'll be what, 50?
I could care less about next season right now. It's literally the last thing on my mind, right next to where I'm going to buy new socks when I run out.
Just a general inquiry: How much would we save if we got rid of Pace (trade or cut)? If the Jets can get more of a pure pass rushing OLB in the draft, I don't know why we would need this guy and I'm sure he commands a decent salary. I think we keep Bryan Thomas for his run stopping ability and the fact that he's cheap and the rookie OLB plays the other side. If Pace is that big name guy that we need to get rid of, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.
I didn't see this before. Like mentioned above, I'd say they should get rid of Pace: he's more expensive and hasn't generated the pass rush that we want out of him. Thats not to say he's not a good player, but I feel we have 4 run stoppers at linebacker right now and we need a guy who can blitz.
