I really hope we can somehow retain Edwards and Holmes this offseason. Sanchez has great chemistry with both of them, and he needs to be surrounded with weapons. Edwards, Holmes, and Cotchery really compliment each other well. A big red zone/deep threat, a speedy YAC/deep thread, and the all around possession guy.
I said it in another thread, but i will reiterate it here. We need to keep Edwards and Holmes more than we do Harris and Cromartie. Our future is based on the development of Mark Sanchez. In order to allow him to develop, we need to keep things the same around him as best we can. Allowing him to have those 3 guys plus DK to throw to for the next 4-5 years will give him the best chance to reach his maximum potential. Harris and Cro are both studs, but Rex has proven time and again he can bring in UDFA's and get them to perform on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, we need to keep the squad together.
Love hearing that Sanchez and Co. stay after practice to improve their chemistry. It's one of the most important elements of all the elite QBs in the NFL: their work ethic.
"Cotchery told The Post that Sanchez spent a lot of extra time last week working with the receivers after practice, which paid off. Holmes pointed out that the receivers and Sanchez are watching a lot more film together, too." Kind of surprised they haven't been doing this earlier. Some of the great combo's used to do this: Namath/Maynard, Unitas/Berry, Manning/Harrison.
and we need as many offensive weapons as we can get in order to counter the suck that is Schotty's playcalling. I agree, but I'm kinda dreaming that this labor thing is going to get itself sorted out, there's gonna be a huge cap and the jets will be holding all the stars and have the ability and the cap space to pay them. Drool.
No Harris is the #1 priority for the offseason, not Edwards, not Holmes, but David Fucking Harris. I fully understand what you are saying and I think it is wrong. You do not let ILB's like that go. In fact, I will go so far as to say, Rex Ryan would never allow that, not in a million fucking years.
He's not more important than Mangold or Ferguson, but he deserves the contract more than anyone. He's a top ILB in the game, and has great character. He hasn't whined once about his small contract....he is definitely priority #1.
There are a lot of hard decisions that will need to be made this off-season. I don't think Harris is going anywhere (Defensive HC won't allow it), and I don't think anyone feels that Wilson is ready to be the starting CB next season, so Cromatrie is almost a must. Then you have Edwards and Holmes, I think Rex likes Holmes more then Edwards because Holmes has beat him too often in the past. Ellis is also a Free Agent.
I think we need to keep both Harris and Cromartie. It'll be hard keeping both Edwards and Holmes but if Kyle Wilson can develop into a top-caliber corner i can live with Cro being let go. Sadly that's not the case, Wilson has alot more to do to develop. But I hope they find a way to keep this core toghether.
If there is football next season, the Jets cannot be major players in the offseason. They need to make sure people are resigned on this team. Continuity at a lot of positions is paramount this year. Also, this team really does need another 6+ player draft.
I've been a believer since the bye week that this is the most important factor in our future success this year. Getting some better coordination of the QB and receivers is key to success. If nothing else, just to get the completion percentage up a bit to improve our odds on third down.
Agreed. While David Harris is the number one priority, I think Cromartie is also a must. I hope they can find a way to keep both Edwards and Holmes. But we can draft lower in the rounds for an OL man, while having Wayne Hunter and Rob Turner compete for some spots, should we let Woody go. But I don't think they should let him go until one of Ducasse or the other guys takes the position and gets the job done.
it's just my opinion. Mick has been saying it for months and months, this team will only go so far as Mark Sanchez can take it. In order for him to do so, he needs to reach his potential. The easiest way to obtain that is to surround him with weapons and keep them there for as long as possible. Believe me I don't want to lose harris. Hell f-in no. In fact 2 weeks ago I was very much in the state of mind you were. Harris should be the #1 priority in part because he is the last of the "core 4," in part because he is the best player of the unsigned on our roster, in part because he has been the consumate professional and if you are going to pay malcontents (aka Revis this offseason) and then turn around and not reward Harris, a message is sent to the locker room and that holding out is more likely to get you paid than being the good guy and letting the chips fall where they may. Heck two weeks ago I was ready to ship out both receivers if it meant we could keep both Cro and Harris. Not after what Mark has accomplished the last two weeks. Mark has shown flashes of greatness, he will continue to do so and the only way to make him consistently great is to surround him with greatness. This receiving core, imo, is the best in the NFL. You can't surround him with much more talent on the offense than he currently has. If we keep the core of the offense together, it will become disgusting when Sanchez hits year 4-5. Rex has already proven he can lose elite talent on the defensive side of the ball and keep the unit in the top 10. Losing Harris would hurt us, maybe even cripple us. But if there was one coach in the league I would trust to keep that from happening its Rex. In the end however, you are probably right, Rex would never allow it. (Franchise tag in the worst possible scenario.) But then again, we just don't know. We have yet to be faced with this dillema in the Ryan era, hell when's the last time we had to choose between keeping an elite offensive core together, vs. an elite defensive core? For all I know, probably never... The ideal situation is to keep all 4. My guess is it might take a miracle to keep 3. Most likely scenario is we are able to retain 2 of the 4.
