Yards against are how most judge a defense and it has some merit, but not a ton when it comes to winnign or losing games. Points on the other hand do. Take a better look at those numbers for both teams. Both New england and Miami are in the bottom half of the league for points against. That to me is a more telling sign than yards against, but lets face it, if you give up 400 yards, 20 points and win, whats the difference from giving up 300 yards, 20 points, and winning? Miami is giving up 22.4 points a game, New Englend 23.2, or .8 points difference. Not all that much. On the other side of the ball New England leads the league at 30.8 points for a game and Miami is sconring a lowly 17.8 points a game, less than Jacksonville for comparison. The phins offense may be more balanced, but its not more productive or at all scary to my eyes. Totaled up, New England's point differental is +7.6 per game, while Miami's is -4.6 points a game. Neither team is all that great on D while the Pats have a very high octane offense and superior special teams as was evident in the game the two teams played. I'm not afraid of winning the Division. Do I think its wraped up? Hell no, but we are in the driver's seat and I am not the type of preson to fear winning big. I think a Phins victory over the steelers helps us more in the long run than a loss by them, because the fight for home feild is going to be rough. I don't see Miami winnign the East after dropping two home games already in the Division. Its that simple.
I dob't put too much stock in NE's scoring, they're notorious for running up the score. The point here would be that the only put 14 up on us and Miami only did 9 better. Bottom line is this is our division to lose this year. Until it's wrapped up I will always root against our division oppenents. Except the Bills of course.
Pretty much. I can think of one time--last game of the 1986 season, MNF, last game ever at the Orange Bowl. Jets had lost 5 straight to finish 10-6, but if Miami beat New England we would have still won the division and gotten a much-needed bye. One would think the Phags could close out a legendary stadium with a win but of course they didn't and we didn't win the division for 12 more years. Aside from that I can't think of any other time.
Yeah exactly. I would root for Miami in this game if we were 14-2 and Pittsburgh was 13-2 and we needed them to lose in order to get homefield. In this case though, it's week 7. Too much shit can still happen, and Miami is Miami, fuck them. Once the Jets have the division on complete lockdown, then go ahead and root for Miami and New England against Pittsburgh, but it's still too close to root for them over teams that would be potential competitors for the 1/2 seeds in the conference. And everyone hates Miami and their fans, their crowing will be deafening if they beat Pittsburgh.
Lol hold your nose and root.......I am with you. It so satisfying after a Fin loss. You should hear the crying and whining on the radio down here. I almost feel like a sadist, it is such an awesome thing.
Just remember that the Steelers are 1 Polumalu injury away from being a much more average defense. The Pats are 1 Brady injury from being an average at best offense, you could say the same about the Jets and Sanchez or a number of players on a number of teams. My point is that things can change quickly in this league. It looks like the Steelers and Jets will be in contention for the #1 seed right now, but that is FAR from assured. What we do know FOR SURE is that we need to beat out the Pats, Fins and Bills to win our division. That's why you root for them to lose until much later in the season when the playoff picture starts to materialize.
One of the first weeks I had DirecTV Sunday Ticket in 2002, the Jets were getting killed by Jacksonville. Prior to getting DTV I'd have been stuck with it until 4:00, but flipping around I found Miami getting killed by KC. Saved my Sunday, I said fuck the Jet game I can watch this, it was awesome.
I don't think I could ever root for Miami. I don't care how positively it would effect us I just despise their team, city, and most of all their fans.
Yeah, I have to agree with you jutty, the division title comes first plus I hate the dolphins........ and it's a tad early yet to be worrying about the implications of home field in the playoffs related to this Pittsburgh/Miami game. Although one fact that should be mentioned is that the Jets have never beaten the Steelers in Pittsburgh....0-7 lifetime I think. That December game is not going to be easy no matter how good the Jets are or how far ahead they may be in the division.
I hope you don't root for Miami because who you root for directly affects the outcome of the game. We win and lose based on who you root for. Seriously. I mean it.
You mustn't mean me because I'm staring down the barrell of a Yankees-Giants World Series. As a Dodger fan that's a no-win.
Totally agree, Monday's after fin losses are almost as good as Monday's after Jet wins. I usually don't listen to radio down here, except on those glorious Monday's...
I'm rooting for a BRUTAL PHYSICAL game which each team beats the S... out of each other thus weakening them for latter in the season. Other than that, I don't give an F who wins. A Pox on both their houses.
6 games into the season you root for the Steelers to bury the Fins, three games to go and home playoffs on the line you might consider the question... If this is our year you want to do it right, no second guessing, lead the league is the only way to go, beat the Steelers at home and let them come to the New Jets Stadium for a final showdown.
