http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets..._xFuVEeFn1JfIWINUoiLowK?CMP=OTC-rss&FEEDNAME= Weren't there concerns in the preseason? Laughable concerns, but concerns nonetheless. Its called Rex Ryan, and Mark Sanchez being the unquestioned leader of this team.
Good article...things are falling into place for our team. I'm sure we have a few more bumps in the road and I could see us losing maybe 2 more games. But I really think barring any major injuries, come playoff time, we are going to be in great shape. A great time to be a Jets Fan!!
I laughed when I read this line: Tight end Dustin Keller said Sanchez "does it so much it gets annoying."
Like we said in the preseason, its all the other teams can hope for, we have way to much talent not to be winning an awful lot of games this year. The question from here on out is can we put it all together down the stretch? As everyone is aware, our defense is not playing up to standards, heck it isn't really even performing on a top 10 pace yet. Don't worry, thanks to the bye, our guys will get healthy and spend extra time in the film room and fix the mistakes, and come out as a dominant unit against Green Bay. Our offense can still be better, we leave lots of plays on the field, either through missed throws by mark, or a missed block by the OL, or a drop by the receivers... If they ever start clicking on all cylinders and play the "perfect game" they might score 50. By perfect game, I mean Mark doesnt miss any wide open guys (like he has the last 2-3 weeks) receivers don't drop a pass (keller dropped one this past week, holmes the week before) and the OL puts in a dominant performance in the running game.
Exactly what is making the defense so average this year (compared to last years)? Is it really Revis' absence/average play that's causing all it?
I have no idea, because if anything, Cromtartie has really stepped up and filled in for Revis' old role. It can't be that we're missing Kerry Rhodes and Donald Strickland that much.... I really don't get it.
I would say that's most of it. He's close to 100% now though, and the pass D really did well against one of the better passing attacks in the league last week. I think we're about to see the pass D get back to full strength. Of course you also have a lot of new guys in the secondary (Cromartie, Pool, Wilson) - and teams have a year of film on us.
Yet 5th in Pts/game (16.8) Yards are an overrated stat. A team can be playing good red zone defense, creating sacks and turnovers at key moments, and the offense isn't giving other teams a short field. Just ask the Cowboys who are averaging 400 yds/game yet only 20 points.
The only thing I can think of is that early on (and still now, although not as much) the Jets were giving up huge completions due to communication issues/awful play by Wilson. That said, the red zone D has really stepped up for the most part and limited the damage of those big plays. Of course Revis helps out with that a lot. He removes Wilson from the field with the exception of nickel packages, allows Cro to be placed on ideal assignments (rather than automatically assuming the Revis role each time), and obviously shuts down the offense's #1 receiver on each play. He has a MASSIVE effect on how this defense plays.
In the last Mike Pettine interview, he specifically said that they haven't been able to do some things on defense that they were able to do last year because 24 isn't ready. He's probably going to be ready on Halloween. Then the rest of the NFL can lick nuts when they try and beat us.
That's in yards allowed .... IMHO a lousy way to rate a defense, we have been ahea in almost all of the games and gave up some BS yardage as teams were trying to come back .... They are tied for 8 in points allowed with 101 or 16.83 points a game and 4 of those 8 teams have only played 5 game ..... I agree the "D" doesn't seem to be as good as last year, but allowing 16.8 points a game is going to allow us to win a lot of games. We are within 9 points of 2nd place in points allowed and that is KC and they have only played 5 games ....
