I have always been the fan that would defer the kick off if I was the coach. I have Noticed that almost everytime that the Jets win the coin toss, they select to kick. I think that this helps us in more ways than one and has also helped us win some games this year by having the lead going into the half, and building on that after halftime. Do you think that this is part of the jets strategy or that its just a coinceidnece?
100 percent strategy. Our defense coming out on the field and stopping opposing teams offenses immediately swings momentum in our favor. Also if we score right before the half and than score again on our first possession of the second half that can be a huge points swing.
Rex has said on more than one occasion that he will ALWAYS defer if he wins the toss. I've been a fan of this move forever and he's the first coach I've ever seen who does it religiously. Nothing deflates a team (especially on the road) more than stuffing their asses on the opening drive.
I've always preferred to get the ball coming out of halftime. Seems to me you can make a bigger impact with a big drive in the third quarter than to open the game.
Have we even given up any points on the opening drive this season? Ravens-fumble recovery Patriots-3 and out? Dolphins-3 and out? Bills-3 and out? Vikings-3 and out? Has any team even gotten to the 50 yard line on us in the opening drive?
I look at it this way: At the start of the game, both teams are tied at 0-0, but come half-time, your team could potentially be losing by a large margin, and not getting the ball to start the second half isn't helping. Simple strategy.
Yes, it's completely random that every time the Jets have won the toss since Ryan took over that we've elected to kick.
the funny thing is when buffalo won the toss this year they deferred to us and we marched down field for a TD
Having the offense on the field to start the 3rd quarter is the ideal situation, ALL THE TIME in my opinion.
I would defer a kick even if my Offense was the shit. You want to be able to come out and dictate how the second half is going to be played.
We haven't even allowed a point in the 1st quarter this season. Our defense always starts out great. (Manning got sacked twice opening drive of AFCCG)
I would always defer, no matter whether I had a good O or D - I'd just rather be sure of getting the ball when the game is half over, whether I'm down or up.
My coach in high school had a saying. "Winners want the ball." So we elected to receive every game. We won a single game that season. DEFERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
I think deferring the kickoff is tailor made for the Jets. Their defense is good enough that the coaching staff will always feel confident they will get an opening drive stop. There offense, while solid, is not a scoring machine. There is no reason to believe they can storm down the field on the opening drive and score (although that's just what did to the Bills) consistently. Plus, I love getting the ball with a chance to go up by more and/or break a tie, and maybe more importantly, if you a trailing give yourself a chance to come back quick.
No brainer here. Defer every time. Rex wants to send as message to the league by telling everyone to give us their best shot right from the door or else we're going to bury them with our defense. While our D has left some things to be desired (mainly due to injury & Wilson), they have been very effective & will continue to do so Sunday. Offense wins games, but Defense wins championships.
