Maybe SOJ is dead but not same old jets fans. Have to laugh when people start bitching about a win. Like I said in another thread. The game plan was obviously to throw, not run against that defense. The weather didn't cooperate so Sanchez looked human, so what?
I don't disagree. We pissed a lot of games away last year, and we've had the opportunity to do so in at least three of five this year and only lost one. So that's the good news.
See you are stating the obvious. The plan may have been to throw, but you must adapt to the elements. In this case, if it is a monsoon, perhaps running the ball is a better option. It is reasonable to question the playcalling when the weather is bad.
A.S., I don't always agree with you POVs, but you're spot on. The Jet's culture has changed, plain and simple. Some fans are never statisfied, this is the NFL, it's really difficult to win week in and week out, and especially dominate a game. Don't think that there won't be some hiccups, its a long season. The Jets haven't turned over the ball, if that comes into play down the road, and it will, games are going to be even tighter. Good teams find a way to win in close games, bad teams find a way to lose. Everyone need to enjoy the ride, it won't be easy, but should be fun with the best record in the NFL at 4-1.
One thing I love about this team is that it seems the bandwagoniers of the NFL fanbase are trending towards hating the Jets rather than trying to pile on in mass. We definitely do have bandwagon homers as every winning team does... but there's so much hate out there that I feel there's a vibe that there's something more to this Jets team than simply being flavor of the month. It's a pretty sweet feeling.
It just feels good to watch this team taking the necessary steps to become an elite squad in this league. Last nights win was, IMV, a statement to the league that although we talked alot, we're backing it up on the field so now feel free either to jump on the bandwagon or STFU. I'm not so sure last year's team would have won this game but I do know the Mangini teams wouldn't have and the Herm/Hackett teams probably would have played it safe all night and lost late. The SOJ's are indeed fading away with each huge win and we have Rex/Tanny and Woody to thank for it by changing both the character and the karma surrounding this team. Now, we're on a short week and headed to a place we don't play well so, lets not get too high here as next week will be yet another character builder and another chance to bury another ghost of the SOJ's. This team is even more dangerous when they're quiet..
I was going to start an almost identical thread. The Jets of the last 30+ years lose that game. The O can't punch it in for the entire 1st 3 qtrs and I knew it would come back to bite them. Even 2 yrs ago, a guy like favre would have beaten the jets in a game like that. To have a QB that plays an unremarkable game, have an offense that stalls on multiple drives, has one drive start at the opposing team's 19 yard line and still not get in the endzone, and still get the W is HUGE. When Sanchez shines, we all know this team will KILL people, but when we can win when he looks marginal is when you know this team is damn GOOD. Rex even tried to "F___" us with poor clock management, revis falls down on the last drive, and still the D can pick up the rest of the team and get the W... Fuck you Miami - you're headed down and we're headed up!
I get tired of reading the immediate postgame complaints from SOJ fans. What if Folk missed the extra point, what if the Jets gave up a clutch Favre TD (has such a thing even existed over the past few years?), an onside kick, and a field goal? Seriously, get out of here with that garbage. Even championship teams don't win all their games by 2-3 TDs. When it's gut check time, good teams find a way to win when they played all game like they were trying to give it away—see the Colts against the Dolphins on MNF last season. The SOJ mentality starts at the top, and Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum should have proven beyond a doubt already that this Jets team strives to achieve more. Apart from a boneheaded decision by Sanchez to snap the ball before running the play clock all the way down, the Jets didn't defeat themselves. However, I can confidently say that Sanchez will not make that same mistake again. Likewise, I can confidently say that if the Herminator ever won the coaching lottery again and was in a position to have his team kick a field goal for the win on first down with too much time left on the clock, he would still have his QB take two knees while Dick Curl convulses on the ground in his own drool. I can confidently say that if Brett Favre is ever desperate to bring his team back on a late drive again in Week 16 against a garbage team like the Seahawks, he will still heave a pathetic-looking duck into triple coverage that gets picked off and all but kills his team's playoff hopes. These 2010 Jets aren't the SOJ. SOJ is an ugly woe-is-me mentality that is characterized by expecting the worst to happen every time and most importantly, not being accountable for your mistakes and not learning from them. Speaking of which, the loss to the Colts in the AFC Championship last year wasn't the SOJ either. It was a lack of manpower in the secondary against a first-ballot HOF QB and a depleted running back corps in the second half on offense. Maybe I define SOJ differently, but I have different expectations. Losing is losing, and there are no moral victories, but do you learn from your mistakes? Is it an issue embedded in the team's culture and locker room? As long as there is one more game to be played, there is another day to live for in the season. If this team loses, I want it and expect it to be because the other team was simply better on that given day. I might still be waiting for a Jets championship, but the mentality is no longer like that of years past. That's what killed SOJ for me.
Good teams win even when they aren't playing their best. Not every game is going to be pretty but wins all count the same in the standings so take them however they come.
the SOJ mentality creeps up on us even when it shouldn't. I think it's just instinctive when things go bad because it's so deeply ingrained in us. It's hard for a season and a quarter to erase 40 years of bad memories (or like myself, about 15+). I have to admit i got that sick to my stomach feeling which i havent gotten in a long time. i'm one of the more realistic jets fan you'll meet i think, and don't go off the deep end when things go bad but i had an awful feeling when they scored that 2nd percy harvin TD. Considering we made the AFC championship game and lost primarily due to injuries (hard to say that's SOJ) and peyton manning, we have no reason to think these are the SOJ. but i think until we win a championship, it'll be deep down in our DNA. but no, these are not the same old jets. These jets are resilient and fighters and don't give up. They're also extremely physical and focused on beating the crap out of people. Regardless of the outcome, they are not the same old jets
What's pretty amazing is that if you go back to the Pats game last year (a 3rd straight loss) this team is 11-3. (Including the playoffs) I don't feel like looking but that might be the best stretch in the NFL during that time.
Wow, thats an interesting stat. I think so because new orleans lost 3 in a row towards the end and then 2 this season. the colts lost at least 4 times....so yeah, i think so.
It is really very simple. SOJs= losers. So until we become World Champions of the FB world we are still losers so the SOJs is still in effect at least IMHO. While I understand what a lot of U feel which is in the past last nite W would have been a L easily but because we got the W we buried the SOJs but as I said the the SOJs = unsuccessful season which IMHO is SB or bust so until the clock reads 00:00 at the stadium in Dallas in Feb 2011 & we have more points then the NFC entry sorry to say we are just the SOJs
