Have to agree with junc this time. Our D was statistically great, but not truly elite. It came up big while giving shitty field position a lot of times, but regardless, a Great D doesn't allow game winning drives.
Which is the interesting part this year, we are without a doubt giving up ore yards, obviously. On the other hand we are also coming up with big stops and not allowing teams to get back in the game. Coleman with the big pick vs Miami and a pick and fumble recovery in the 4th against the Pats. Last year in these spots we probably give up scores.

You guys gotta stop looking for excuses for Wilson. Seriously. He may become a good or excellent CB, but right now? uggghhh The guy has done nothing impressive. Yes he's a rookie, we know, but to start scouring teh int3rw3bz for something that says: he really ain't that bad... C'mon, If you actually watch games once you can see he's been pretty bad. If you re-watch them like some of us do...he's been absolutely dreadful. As I said, I know he's a rookie but his technique has been pityful and you don't need a "football scientist" for that. Wanna wash it all away w/ the rookie excuse? Kewl...that works, and it's better than trying to make road kill look like the dish of the evening.
No it's not, that is what we are doing this year but we led the league in 3rd down % a year ago- that's not a bend but don't break D. This year until last week we were getting shredded on 3rd downs. When we are playing our best on D we are not a bend but don't break D.
To be honest all I care about his points scored. Right now we are at 15.3 PPG allowed. Which is not even a full point over last years defense, the main difference is our offense is markedly better and we aren't allowing the points in critical situations.
If opposing O's are converting 3rd downs it keeps drives alive and keeps the ball away from our O which isn't good. We have been GREAT on 1st and 2nd downs but failed on 3rd down, if that continues we won't make a deep run. That needs to be corrected.
I agree with that, and I'm positive it will be corrected but we've done these past two games is still different then what would've likely happened last year. Which is getting the stop and even better getting turnovers, which is a major emphasis for Rex going into this season. Creating more turnovers. Yeah the 3rd and longs that are converted have been concerning but with Revis and Pace back it's a whole different game.
There is no easy explanation for anything we do in football these days - the game has evolved that deeply. There could be multiple reasons why Jets in the Q1 have failed to stop on 3rd downs, but I would point that mostly to the absence of the key players. Revis, Jenkins and Pace are all premium players at their position, and incidentally we have lost major key piece in each of the defensive positions (DL/Linebackers/Secondaries) Because of this, Wilson was exposed prematurely. Since we couldn't dominate with current DL, we couldn't generate pressure with the front 7 on a regular basis. Add all that up, and you have shitty 3rd down defense. Jenkins is not coming back, but Pace and Revis are. That will correct a lot of 3rd down woes. Once Rex drafts his NT, this defense will be very hard to attack.
I agree the injured guys play a role and I'm confident this D will be near the top again but so far it hasn't been very good. I think we'll be fine though. I'm excited to see pace and revis back, hopefully they are fully healed and ready to go.
The D was on the field a lot last year because of a lot of turnovers and unsustained offensive drives. That may be why we gave up the last score more often than we would like. Also, I haven't rewatched any games and was at the Braves game Sunday so did not see the Jets/Bills but I agree Wilson has had good position for the most part. It could just be that he is facing savvy vets of the NFL whose eyes don't get wide, who's routes are More crisp, and whose QBs are better by ten fold. I think he's right where We need him in terms of development.
I agree with him, actually. There were no great defenses in the NFL in 2009. The Jets may have led the league in a bunch of categories, but they were by no means dominant, and I can't in good conscience call them 'great'. The NFL had taken a step back on defense, maybe because of the rules changes, maybe it was just an off year - and a Jets team missing their starting NT, with swiss cheese at corner, with no ballhawking safety, and no pure pass rusher rose to the top due to GREAT coaching.
