reconsidered the comment that was originally here and reworked it below NFL awards in general annoy me with the comeback award being by far the worst one. It is obvious that the writers themselves are at odds as to what constitutes the term "coming back".

The following is an old comment that I re-post whenever the comeback player of the year is mentioned. I just never bother to update it. ********************************************* It is a misconception that the award only goes to a player who overcame injury or a personal issue. The award can go to someone who was healthy, but rarely played due to being a backup and it can also go to someone who was not in the league at all the prior season. What you see below was originally written by me in 2006. I'm too lazy to update it. Bruschi played 16 games in 2004, but only 9 in 2005. On the surface it looks extremely odd that Bruschi won the comeback player of the year award for his 2005 season. I suppose that if Bruschi could win the award for '05, then Welker could win it this year even though I could not vote for Welker. The comeback player of the year award is definitely the most ridiculous one because there have been all sorts of reasons why players have won it. Some played all 16 games one year and then the next year they didn't play all the games, but they came back. What do you mean the guy came back? He played more games the year before. Bruschi missed 7 games in the 2005 season and then came back during the season. So maybe somebody who misses almost half of the 2010 season could win this award? Maybe Darren Sharper will be the top candidate then. How about Santonio Holmes? He's missing the first four game. Maybe he'll come back.
It would be awesome if LT got comeback player of the year, but we all know it's probably going to be Wes Welker.
