Do I bother to pick Sanchez as a backup?

I'm in a 15-round draft, standard Yahoo! league...we do a leisurely draft on another message board (twelve-hour pick limit with a six-hour freeze on the clock overnight) that takes about three weeks.

So far everyone has their backups except one team...I think that guy'll pick Cassel, who would be of no use to me anyway since my starter's Romo and they both have the same bye. Here's the top QB's remaining (there's about fifteen picks left before mine), with W4 matchup in parentheses:

    Orton (at Ten)
    Sanchez (at Buf)
    Garrard (Ind)
    Hasselbeck (at Rams)

There's also Trent Edwards (Jets), Jake Delhomme (Cin), Sam Bradford (Sea) and Josh Freeman (can't draft him cause of a W4 bye as well) but they're not under serious consideration really. So do I go with the homer pick and gamble on late-season upside or should I settle for one of the others?

    No.

Orton is the best of that bunch.

I like Orton (had him on my team last year as Brees' backup and that paid off big-time when he had a good game against the Pats), but I'm not really feeling those receivers post-Marshall, plus I think his W4 matchup is possibly the worst of any of those first four.

The Titans had the worst pass defense in the AFC last year and 31st in the the NFL.

To be honest I would not have guessed that with a Jeff Fisher D...they did have some pretty bad games early when they started 0-6.

You also need to consider if Romo gets hurt. I would pick up Orton if available...then its a toss up b/w Garrard and Sanchez. Sanchez wont have Holmes yet either. I expect Sanchez's numbers to get better as the season goes on and as he gets used to Holmes. Orton may be playing from behind a lot due to injuries on D.

Yeah the other guy could surprise me and pick Orton but since he predicted the Chiefs to win the West and Broncos to finish last in another thread on that board I'm thinking maybe not lol. I do need to rank them in any case, some dope could also pick three QB's (one already has).

So should I rank them Orton-Garrard-Sanchez-Hasselbeck?

I would go that route with Garrard and Sanchez being equal. Hasselbeck is a crap shoot. Garrard and Sanchez are game managers on run heavy teams. Freeman is worth a look but does not help you for your bye.

Based on your matchups for week 4, I would go Garrard over sanchez. I see the Jets running all day and there is the potential for Garrard to be down big forced to throw.

The best fantasy Qb's are not always the best Qb's.

We're gonna run all day against Buffalo, so definitely don't take Sanchez for week 4. Hasselback vs. the Rams would even be a better play.

If Orton is there definitely grab him.
