Coles at least makes sense, unlike T.O. I wouldn't be completely against it. Coles is washed up, but as a bit player, it wouldn't hurt to bring him in to compete with Clowney and Smith for the #3 WR when Holmes is out. The main issue is he doesn't play special teams. So it would basically be him vs Clowney for a roster spot. If you'd rather have the veteran, I'm not going to argue against it too much, but I like that Clowney is younger and at least has a little upside.
We could have five #1/2 receivers on our depth chart and some idiot would still make a thread inquiring about a washed up FA WR. How does this sound?: B. Edwards, J. Cotchery, S. Holmes, B. Smith, D. Clowney. Fuck Coles. His attitude is just as bad as TO's all while being about half as talented. I've never seen a more overrated player outside of Carrie Rhodes... How many times has he demanded a pay raise? Three? Fuck that guy.
Really? http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/02/is_laveranues_coles_heading_to.html Coles and Mangini were actually quite close... I'm not saying Coles would come here and destroy the progress but it's just bringing back a player that symbolizes a past mentality, just by his presence...and at the level coles would contribute I really don't see why the Jets would even bother doing that...continue to move forward, don't reach back into the past... And let's not forget the silent treatment he gave Favre when he arrived...whether or not it was the right move it was his QB and for a large portion of camp he refused to even talk to him....I could go on and on.... Listen, Lav Coles was a good receiver for us at one point...but once he was sent to washington it was never the same between the Jets and Coles.
Give Brad Smith a shot. Plus with him on the field the defense will have to respect some crazy shit going down.
RichCimini Breaking: Ex-Jet WR Laveranues Coles will work out for Jets tomorrow, source says. Barring a snag, Coles expected to sign.
Hahaha, I kind of expected this. See, this is a move I don't mind because it's really just Coles vs Clowney. Neither one plays special teams, and Coles's ego has been knocked down enough to where he'd be willing to be a #3/#4 receiver. He should be better than Clowney at that.
Couldn't Clowney be used in the gunner spot on special teams? I'm not a fan of this move...and with andre alison coming back from injury as well I really don't see a need for it.... this likely spells a competition between Alison and Clowney for that spot since both can probably play the gunner...although Alison has return ability which makes him more valuable... this likely spells the end of Clowney, if Coles is signed.
coles jets head coaches 2000 al groh 2001-2002 herm edwards 2005 herm edwards 2006-2008 eric mangini 2010 rex ryan he has played for every jets head coach this decade all the while leaving the team twice.
Clowney gets a lot of love for catching what two passes in a preseason game two years ago. He's not done much since. If Coles came to camp and played better, why wouldn't they pla him? Until Holmes shows up, the Jets are thin after Edwards and Cotch.
I mentioned this earlier and no one really seemed to pick up on it. I think everyone assumed I was talking about using him as a return specialist and not a gunner. With Wallace Wright not coming back, there's a gunner spot that's open. In my opinion, it's Donovan Warren's spot to lose, but Clowney has elite speed. The only way Clowney will make this roster now is if he makes an impact DEFENSIVELY on special teams.
I think it's worth a look...although he doesn't really have the size...he could break down lanes though with his speed allowing others to break free down the field...
Here's my plan: Hope the weather stays hot, somehow convince Clowney that September is still August and he'll fill in just fine until we get Holmes off the 4-game suspension. The beauty is in the simplicity, Dude.
I really hope Clowney gets cut during camp. So much wasted conversion on here about this guy. Elite speed WR is another phrase for track star not NFL WR
A familiar face apparently is headed back to the New York Jets -- for the second time. Free-agent wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who played with the Jets from 2000 to 2002 and 2005-08, will work out for team officials Friday at the team's headquarters in Florham Park, N.J., a league source told ESPNNewYork.com. Barring complications, Coles is expected to sign with his former team. The Jets report to training camp Sunday in Cortland, N.Y. With Santonio Holmes out the first four games due to a league suspension for violating the substance-abuse policy, the Jets are looking for insurance at wide receiver. Coles would join Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith as the top four receivers for the first four games. Coles left the Jets after the 2008 season, a mutual parting in which he agreed to waive his guaranteed salary in 2009. It was risky, but he wound up signing a four-year, $28 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. At 32, Coles appears to have lost a step. He produced only 43 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns last season with the Bengals. He's also had concussion issues in the past, but he could be a good fit with the Jets because they won't ask him to be an every-down player. He always was a popular player in the locker room, well-respected for his toughness and work ethic. The decision to visit with Coles comes only two days after word leaked that the Jets had placed an exploratory phone call to Terrell Owens' agent. Owens wound up signing with the Bengals. In 10 seasons, Coles has 674 catches for 8,609 yards and 49 touchdowns. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5420050
