He brought my favorite baseball team 5 world championships during my lifetime and hasn't failed to put competitive team on the field for over 15 years now. Plus he introduced me to the calzone. As a fan, I don't think I could ask for anything more from an owner. RIP

George will fire Billy from heaven by the end of the week.

RIP--I hate (HATE) the Yankees but he was an icon in NY sports and will be missed.

Somebody said Bob Sheppard died first just so he could be there to introduce George in heaven.

His donation to Virigina Tech immediately following the shooting rampage will always stand out in my mind. The fact that he had absolutely no connection to the school was what made it even more impressive.

Biggie , Tupac? Who are these people you speak of?

Great Owner, even better winner. In an age when so many owners don't care about winning, Stienbrenner cared for the Yankees in a way no one else could. RIP Boss

RIP. Wasn't a Yankee fan, but I always admired them for having THE BEST owner in sports history.

    Without argument.

On the other hand, I've driven by Steinbrenner Stadium thousands of times times, and I know that it was a gift to MIT from George and his sisters in their father's name, but there's no possible way that he wouldn't have considered, and taken great evil joy in, the tens of thousands of Red Sox fans driving by the big letters that say "S T E I N B R E N N E R - S T A D I U M" every day of the week. At least I HOPE he considered that. It's only funny if he meant it.

I see some people in here absolutely shitting this thread.
Either their YANKEES hate is just over bearing
or they don't understand what having a great owner like King George was.

This man went all out to win, every year, every day.

Were there times fans got pissed @ him, Hell yes but what George did for this franchise was full throttle 100%.

His donations to society should NOT be forgotten.
The YANKEES always gave during his reign. The Media loved to bash the man because it sold papers but then he didn't care about that and actually embraced it like no other owner.

George, you were a part of my life growing up. Loving baseball, going to the stadium and always having an incredible and memorable experience.

Boss....you will be missed, not only by me, not only by YANKEES fans but by all Sports. You set a bar that will never be reached and for that we thank you.

    R.I.P.

To the Steinbrenner family, my condolences.

To George himself, what a ride! As a Yankees fan for a long time I am saddened by his passing and still disagree with him for several of his moves. But in the end I was able to see him as a man who cared for his sports organization and was loyal to several members of it.

I really find it hard to believe there will ever be another owner like him in the sports world.

Life is full of characters and the world lost one of them today.

    He was not.

Steinbrenner was petty and quick to yell at and put down people, but that was usually related to performance or lack thereof in baseball.

He did far more good things than bad.

I really hope Hal gives control of the Yankees back to Hank and takes over the racing and other businesses himself. Hank will still have the same drive his father did and I'm not sure Hal cares all that much.

    Good-bye George.
I've hated you and loved you.
Ive questioned your decisions and also thanked you for them.
You have done plenty wrong but have done plenty right.
You wanted the spotlight but in the end it was always about the Yankees.

    You will be missed.
