1983 also had high expectations w/ the jets being sonsidered a SB favorite after their run to the '82 Title Game and I would say other years since Namath where we had SB aspirations legitimately were '83, '86, '99,'02 and this coming year.
The big difference between 1999 and the other years (83, 86 & 02) is that we had Bill Parcells. Never before did we have a leader like him to deliver us to the promised land. There were times during other seasons (beating undefeated Denver to go 7-1 in 1986) that had our hopes up but if we are talking about coming into a season before any game has been played, 1999 was the year.
1999 and it's not even close. This coming year we are the sexy pick. Between our coach and the players we've picked up, we certainly need to be in the discussion. In 1999 there was no discussion. The Jets were the consensus pick with no logical arguments to the contrary.
I think we had a better shot of winning in 1999, so I'm going to go with that. I think we have a better team now, but with Peyton Manning in the AFC, I think it's a tougher road to the SB
Wow...it look like we have about the same amount of expectations from both years. Of course, we all know what happened in 1999 after all, hence I picked 2010. Even though we have a rookie QB, I just feel we have a better team overall than just a 2nd year QB who should turn things on. I would go as far as saying that if Sanchez gets knocked out for 3-4 games for whatever reason (knock on wood!), we would still be a playoff team.
Not this season, but Manning is getting up there in age and doesn't have too many great seasons left in him. Future does not look too bad at the moment.
we cant base a whole lot on las vegas, but in 1999 we were the favorites in the afc, this year we are the 3rd maybe 4th favorite.
My expectations are superbowl every year, for any of you that ever played they put their pants on just like we do, right?
That is true but we still had legit SB dreams in those other years heading itno those seasons. 1999 definitely had the highest of any since I have been following the team but it wasn't the only year w/ SB expectations. Let's hope this team fulfills those expectations for the first time.
That about sums it up. in '99 there was no other team, not like the Colts, ravens or Pats are to us this year. It was our time.
Going into '99 teams like Miami and jacksonville were also supposed to be serious contendres. jax wound up going 14-2 that year so there were other contenders like Indy, NE and Bal this year.
I voted 1999 for this reason. They even managed to get back to 8-8 without Vinny after a 1-6 start once the team stabilized.
This. We were a much more balanced team in 1999, and also showed that we were very much so a championship-caliber team. Sanchez is what brings 2010 back to reality for me. IMO, I could see us going all the way, or totally fizzling out to a ~6-10 record. As Mark goes, so does our season in 2010...
Yeah, the answer is 99 as I thought, but I think it is closer than some think. Hasty's post was good, but the Jets were better than a 9-7 team last year. Both Dolphins games, Jaguars, Bills, and Falcons games were the Jets to win. Things go their way, or Sanchez is more mature, the Jets could have been 13-3/12-4, seriously.
One word. Bill Parcells. I like Ryan, but Parcells was a capable established figure who has done it before. Not that Ryan can't do it, I think he can. Parcells had the resume. However, I think this team has more talent than that team...on paper.
Also, the 1999 squad was a win now team with plenty of veterans and no consideration towards future cap ramifications. The team wasn't built with the future in mind. Vinny and Martin's contracts were both set to blow up within three years. The core of the 2010 team we have now is young enough that they will have other chances in the future if they don't win it all this year.
