Revis feels bad about making Rex look ... bad?

Darrelle Revis plans to meet with Rex Ryan after apparently "humiliating" the head coach with his excuses for missing practice snaps.
"This is the beginning of stuff turning bad," Revis said after a minicamp practice. "I'll talk to Rex today and we'll try to see eye to eye and try to do it the right way." Revis isn't backing down from complaints about his contract situation. Though he insists he was "lightheaded" on Monday, he admitted the hamstring injury had no truth to it.

Not a surprise. Rex seemed pissed at his press conference yesterday.

    Rex.

Cool maybe Darrelle will take himself off the statue, and the Jets man up and give him a nice amount of guaranteed money, and we can all talk about positive things

Jets' Revis: 'I'll talk to Rex today'

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5289222

ORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Twenty-four hours after Darrelle Revis' mini-protest became major news, Rex Ryan still hadn't talked to his star cornerback to find out what exactly happened Monday morning on the New York Jets' practice field. So much for a hurry-up attack.

Ryan and Revis were planning to meet late Tuesday to discuss the matter. If Ryan receives the same version that made headlines, Revis admitting he sat out a few plays to let everyone know he's upset with stalled contract negotiations, the coach won't be happy.

    Jets blog
Looking for more information on the green and white? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

"It's so not him," Ryan said. "It's uncharacteristic of him to get out of anything. I have to hear it from the horse's mouth. I know what he told [reporters], but I'm sure there's an explanation. You know what, it might be just this is a thing he wanted to do and that's fine. But he knows that's not right."

Welcome to another day in the Revis soap opera.

Expressing a more conciliatory tone than Monday, Revis said he was looking forward to speaking with his coach to prevent the situation from deteriorating any further. The All-Pro cornerback said he wants to be "a Jet forever" and that he hasn't considered the possibility of requesting a trade, a la Logan Mankins of the New England Patriots.

"This is the beginning of stuff turning bad," Revis said after a minicamp practice. "I'll talk to Rex [Tuesday] and we'll try to see eye to eye and try to do it the right way. [Monday] was a little frustration going back and forth, but we want to keep things positive."

On Monday, Day 1 of a mandatory minicamp, Revis said he sat out a few plays to make a statement about his contract situation. Initially, he told reporters that a pulled hamstring and lightheadedness were the reasons he removed himself, later acknowledging it was contract-related. Thing is, Ryan didn't get that version until he heard it from reporters -- he thought it was injury-related -- putting him in an uncomfortable position.

After a day to consider his remarks, which fueled an Internet buzz and a huge outcry on radio call-in shows, Revis said he didn't regret anything he said. He conceded the hamstring alibi was a tall tale, but he claimed he was, in fact, lightheaded, saying he hadn't eaten before practice. But he didn't recant the part about his protest being mostly contract-motivated.

"I'm not going to take it back because that's how I felt," he said. "I'm releasing some of the frustration from the course of a couple of months because of the things they promised me ... This is not me. I'm going to take a step back and re-evaluate things in my own personal life."

Revis' approach may have softened ever so slightly, but he wasn't in forgive-and-forget mode. Not at all. He defended his unconventional actions from Monday, telling ESPNNewYork.com he sat out a few plays "to let [the organization] know that, 'You know, don't promise things that you can't promise.' That's hurtful when things don't happen. You're waiting on someone's word for something to get done, and it's frustrating."

Revis said it wasn't his intention to make a statement to Ryan, or to make Ryan look bad.

"He got the message, but the message is not to Rex," said Revis, who participated fully Tuesday in both practices. "Rex wants to get it done the right way. It's not him, it's upstairs."

Revis reiterated that GM Mike Tannenbaum promised, as recently as April, that the organization wanted to make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. He said Ryan was in that same meeting and expressed the same sentiment.

The Oakland Raiders' Nnamdi Asomugha is the highest-paid cornerback, averaging $15.1 million per year -- including $16.2 million this season. Revis, due to make $1 million this season, wants to be in the $16 million neighborhood -- a Peyton and Eli Manning-esque neighborhood.

The Jets have said they're willing to renegotiate Revis' current contract, which has three years remaining, but they're believed to be offering around $10 million a year. They regard the Asomugha deal as an aberration.

"Negotiations get kind of crazy sometimes, but I'm here and I'm practicing," Revis said. "There's no hatred or anything like that. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time and let things be what they be."

The fact that he realized he acted inappropriately is a good sign. You don't do that to good people like Rex.

So none of us are perfect, not even Revis.

    Let's move on.

It's pretty clear that he feels bad about putting Rex on the spot...

He should feel bad - his actions were completely unprofessional, and reflected poorly on him.

I said this before in another thread, but Rex knows exactly what he's doing; Darrelle does not. One is a cornerback genius; the other is a social genius. Darrelle Revis' press conferences go over about as well as Rex's man coverage.

Rex Ryan is not an idiot. Far from it. He knows what Revis was doing. Why feign ignorance, humiliation, embarrassment then? For this quote:

Jets Camp 1, Revis Camp 0.

Remember the "I'm just the defense guy" during the season? "Gosh, I just kind of sit in the offensive meeting room and nod. 'Uh-huh. Uh huh.' I'm just a dumb ol' defensive coach, I don't know nuthin' bout no offense." ("Oh, by the way, I'm going to implement a color-coded system and demand a power rushing attack that'll save our rookie quarterback and salvage our season...")

"Gee whiz, I'm just a dumb ol' football coach. Is there a contract extension goin' on? Shucks, I wouldn't know nuthin bout that. Did somebody fib about an injury during negotiations? Gosh, I ain't never seen that in my twenty years of coaching."

Exactly. Its actually a bigger move by Revis stepping up here, in some way he's putting the team above himself.

We will fix this, but you cant really fault Revis, contracts and money are a huge part of the game.

Revis is getting pulled by his Agent, I'm sure he's really confused right now, sitting down with Rex should work wonders.

Well Revis's diva atitude finally came home to roost...it's one thing to hold out and whine about management, Tannenbaum and the Jets brought all this on themselves with the way they've consistenly lied to the players about taking care of them. Plus I fully understand any NFL player getting what he can get with contracts being non-guaranteed and careers being so short.

But when you do what he did yesterday, that's crossing the line. Not only did he make Rex look bad but he opened Pandora's Box, if he takes a few plays off in minicamp who's to say he doesn't have a minor injury suddenly linger during the season?

Rex is crazy like a fox lol.

Don't love Revis. In fact, I've lost all respect for him. To me, he sounds no different from Moss, Owens, Marshall and the other players who have put themselves above the team and torn teams apart over the years.

These are not normal times. The uncapped year and the lack of a CBA have changed the landscape. The Jets are hamstrung by rules limiting how much they can increase salaries and the uncertainty with what will be in a year if a CBA is signed and a cap reinstituted. Plus add in the stupidity of the Raiders and you see how outrageous Revis' demands are. If Revis does not realize that, he is an idiot. The Jets will take care of him. They would be idiots not to, but it just may not be the right time, considering all of the above and that he has THREE years left on his contract.

In fact, the Jets hold all the cards and Revis knows this, which is why he is resorting to the worst kind of behavior a player can resort to. Think about it. Revis is saying "I want to be the highest paid CB in football and I don't care about anything else." How selfish can he be. All he can do is stage these infintile walk outs and "mini work stoppages." Is he going to let receivers catch passes like Marshall dropped passes last year??? He is following the Kendall-Baker model of bitching to the press on a daily basis, team and coaches be damned.

If I were the Jets, I would tell him we have changed our minds about trying to work things out this year based on his current unprofessional and selfish behavior in a year when the Jets have a very lofty team goal. I would make him play under his current contract. Take care of Mangold and Ferguson first. And tell Revis if he wants a new deal, he and other players should get the players union to sign a new deal asap, because until they do, this is the new negotiation world they live in and they better get used to it. And we'll see him in camp by August 12 if he wants to continue his hissy fit because otherwise he loses his 4th year of service. End of story.

While I haven't lost all respect for Revis, I will never like him the same way as guys such as Martin and Chrebet.

He was promised a contract, and promised his old one would be void. Now the Jets offer him a new one without any guaranteed money I would be pissed off too.

I understand Revis' position but i think we're all disappointed that he (and/or his agent) are being so obstinate. They both know the raiders deal should not be the benchmark. I love having Revis back there. He is hands down the most dominant defensive player we've had in possibly the last 3 decades (i know that's kind of stretching it but the argument can be made). But if he pushes this much further we should just trade him for a couple #1's

    I agree..

Didn't the Colts tell PEYTON MANNING to wait till the smoke clears and that they are not touching his deal??????

There area lot of issues right now and these players every day are whining abourt "ME ME ME.. I DESERVE...."

Come on already, I don't sniff an ounce of TEAM in anything they are saying just "Pay ME TOP DOLLAR".... How the #### can every one of you get top dollar and still have a good team under the CAP...

It's as if they never heard of the Salary Cap and the CBA issues - they are brainwashed by agents...

The media shouid be writing this angle and they should be talking about how fans are disgruntled and would even condier tading these guys

Revis now has to completely re-prove himself after that bush league move. All the people blowing his horn, claiming he wouldn't tank plays, or not play hard (remember his "things may change" comment?) have been proven wrong. Now, after this stunt, if he gets burned this year, or misses a tackle, or takes himself out of a game, how do we know for sure that its legit, and not due to his contract situation? There are some things in pro sports you just don't do, and he did one of them.
