How many people in the business world go from an entry level position to CEO without getting a raise in between?
I knew a programmer at a previous job that is currently the owner of a .com and got himself a bigger raise than Revis is trying to get. When you are the best at what you do, if you work hard enough, raises like that just kind of happen.
I'm wondering what does he mean by "there will be changes"? Is he insinuating that if he doesn't get his money, he won't play as hard? I hope not, cause that is seriously fucked up, even for a modern day athlete.
Remember all of the articles written over the winter on how all of these new signings will ultimately cause the Jets to implode... Well I think it's slowly starting to happen, fueled by a player that none of us would ever have imagined. There is no doubt the Jets need Revis, but at what cost (and I'm not talking about money)?
yeah the guy that was pissed about getting beat once in practice in june isn't gonna play as hard. and how exactly would not playing as hard benefit him? if he doesn't play as hard he won't have as good a year as last year and all of a sudden he isn't the best corner in the league and that would undermine his attempts to get the best deal he can.
Both sides have valid points. Revis is right when he says that if he is the assumed best defensive player in the NFL (at least the CB), then he should get paid like one. Highest paid CB: Aso at 3 yrs $45 mil ($15mil/yr) Of that, 28.6mil a guaranteed in the first two years. Highest paid Defender (non-CB): Albert Haynes at 7 years $100mil ($14.3mil/yr) Both of these contracts are outrageously priced. Next highest paid defender doesn't even come close to them. I think DeMarcus Ware is making about $11mil/yr. Freeney averaged $12mil/yr. Revis can not compare his salary requirements with Albert cuz Albert was a FA. Huge difference. Revis, however, can compare with Aso's contract. Although the reason Aso got a massive deal was to keep him in a shitty team for three more years, virtually guaranteeing him no ring in his prime. Thats an opinion of many people including me, but listening and watching to the press conference, Revis doesn't care WHY Aso was given that sort of money. I'd be fine with a 3 yrs $45 mil EXTENSION ($66mil over the next 6 seasons), but not a new contract starting today at 6 yrs $90 mil. I think they'll have to settle in between somewhere around 6 yrs $75 mil. Thing to note is, when somebody asked him if he'd take $13-14 mil/ yr offer, he said something like lets get the offer and we'll see. So Im guessing Revis is asking $16, but he'll settle for around $13 mil yr. If Revis is given $16 mil yr contract, I can assure you most of the money would be in the final two yrs with not a whole lot of guarantees in those years besides roster bonuses. This will protect the Jets if they believe that paying Revis $40 mil in last two years is not worth it while Revis has a chance to prove himself in the first 4 years at $50 mil. 6 years $90 mil, $24 mil guaranteed with $40 mil in the last 2 years OR 6 years $75 mil, $30 mil guaranteed with about equal salaries over each two years period Problem with the first contract is, Jets already have Revis for three years at $21 mil. Why pay $50 mil for 4 years? This makes the negotiations very tough cuz Jets know what they have. But on Revis' end, he wants his money regardless of his rookie contract. And he wants it starting today. I don't blame him, but he can't ask for 3 years $70 mil extension (since singing a new 6 years $90 deal is essentially giving Revis 3 extra years at $70 extra mils). That is why Revis was apparently insulted with the first offer cuz it was probably given with the next 3 years in mind. This is going to be one hell of a negotiation. Definitely the toughest negotiations Mike T. has had so far. And I'll stand by Mike T in any case.
Looking at the situation from Darrelle's perspective, the Jets can basically "bail out" on Revis if he gets hurt because the Jets have the option to buy back those last 2 years of his contract. So if he gets hurt, he's screwed because his play gave the Jets an option on his contract. Correct?
The Jets signing a few vets to moderate contracts and trading for guys in the last year of their deal is related to Revis wanting a new deal how?
Sorry but you are way off base. Two things to consider: 1. The "signings" you speak of are relatively cheap, one year "show me" deals. Cromartie, Holmes, Tomlinson and Edwards could all be gone next year. My feeling is at least two will be resigned to long term deals. Tomlinson is the only one with more than one year on his deal, and all are relatively cheap signings for this year. 2. Without a new agreement with the NFLPA in place, alot of teams are leery to resign players to long terms deals with no idea what rules or cap (or lack thereof) will be in place. Even Bill Polian has balked on reupping a great WR (Reggie Wayne) who in my eyes is one of the best WRs in the game, at the least, number three overall. Read the Q&A with Tanny, he has realized this day was coming for at least a year, and he has preset ideas in place. It will take time to work this out. But I will not overreact when one player says he is upset. You have to realize, alot if this is posturing in the papers to get a few more dollars. I have confidence this will be taken care of.
Uh, financially, probaby not. Don't get me wrong, Revis is a good talent, but its takes more than 1 stellar + 2 above average seasons to start demanding top bucks and a reworked contract. He has had a solid NFL career, but would have to replicate his success from 09-10 to even be considered for a substantial raise. Being a fan of an opposing team does not mean that I know nothing about other organizations, so chill with the bashing. Just comment and keep the childish name calling to a minimum.
No, the Jets didn't offer anything close to $15mil per year deal. See my post above as to why Jets wouldn't offer such a deal. Makes no sense for the Jets. No, the Jets are not regretting any such comments. Revis does not need his coach's conferences to know that he's the best DB in the NFL. Revis can bring that to the negotiations table, but a case can be made that coaches say such stuff to motivate their players. Dolphins owner said Henne was the best QB Dolphins have ever had. I've seen nothing resembling to that thus far into his career. Coaches/owner say such stuff and its very common. I hope so too, but this one will drag. The longer it goes, the better it is. This gives time for a few other big contracts to fall through, giving the Jets some leverage. I hope Revis doesn't sign a contract this yr. That way, we get to keep him this yr for $1mil. But next yrs contract could mean salary cap era. If there is a salary cap era, maybe that gives the Jets some leverage. There are too many ifs and buts. Too many uncertainties as to what the future might hold for us. That, combined with the fact that we already have Revis for the next 3 years anyways means this is not going to resolve any time soon.
I agree .... We own his A$$ for the next 3 years .... If he sits out, we own it even longer .... He doesn't accumulate years of service if he doesn't play .... He'll get his payday .... To side with the team, they are a bit handcuffed right now ... With the uncapped year and not knowing if there is going to be a cap moving forward, or what the cap may be if it is instituted ... IMHO, I don't think that they DON'T want to pay him, I think they do want to give him a good contract, but not knowing what the parameters are going to be makes it tough .... We aren't the raiders, we won't break the bank and make it all guaranteed, just to please Revis .... He has NO LEVERAGE at this point ... Maybe he shouldn't have agreeed to the rookie contract as it was written ...
What does this have to do with Revis? He is not in a contract year, but he is sure treating last year as if he was.
Technically, Revis is in a contract year since incentives voided the final 2 years of his deal. The Jets have the freedom to buy back 2011 and 2012 if they want to pay him 5 mil and 15mil respectively for those 2 seasons. Tannenbaum may have different things in mind since he is a math geek and I'm sure would like to structure money so that it allows him to work with the other 3 players we have in contract situations.
We shouldn't have to. We are not a shitty team. We are a true SB contender this year and that should be considered as an incentive. I can assure you Dan Marino would be willing to give up a couple of seasons in exchange for a ring.
You said a player should not get a huge contract just because he was coming off a stellar year. Players get paid according to what they have been doing recently, or in some cases, their potential. Revis has huge potential and a stellar all pro season last year. He can demand that money. I know last year wasn't a contract year for him, but if the Jets are talking contract with Revis, last year IS the basis for his stand. There is no other way of doing it. Jets want to lock him up to be a career Jet and thats understandable.
Yeah, that is a good point. I just do not want team chemistry to be ruined by wanting money or contracts. Revis and Mangold are great team players. Now, all of a sudden, they might hold out and miss training camp? I don't like that.
Just want to take the time out to thank you and Jets and Boys. Seriously, we can all agree to disagree (someone said earlier he doesn't "deserve" the raise he is asking for, and I'm dying to know how that determination was made), but saying Revis only had "1" good year clearly shows you really do not follow this team. I wont even dignify the Vonte and Sean Smith comments with a response.
