Ok I know this is completely random but as crazy as it sounds I had a dream last night about the Dennis Byrd game ( i was 7 and i still remember that play vividly). Anyways I was thinking that we as a fan base, totally unrelated to the organization should do or plan something awesome for the 20th anniversary of his injury. I know it is not till 2012 but if we get the ball rolling now we can really put together something awesome for him. Problem is I dont have any idea what we can do. I hope that this thread will help facilitate some ideas for this. This would be an opportunity to show him that we still think about him and appreciate the sacrifice he made for the jets. This would also be an opportunity to show the current players how loyal of a fan base we are and that we really do care about true jets. So all that said, anyone who has any suggestions or wants to share there input please do, even if that means calling me a crazy ass hole for wanting to do this. An idea just off the top of my head is that we have a huge tailgate party in his honor and invite him to it before one of the games..i know its not great but its a start
The Jets can not find him, they tried for the event last season celebrating 50 years of the Jets organization. They could not track him down- Plus I'd rather the date of him walking out onto the field be celebrated not his injury. September 5, 1993
ok, i did not know that. I do agree with you on that second point, absolutely we should honor his biggest accomplishment, him walking again. But like i said we have plenty of time to organize something, and maybe by then some one tracks him down. Even if we cant find him, honoring him anyways would be great.
I'd love for him to come out and there walk/honorary captain again. It'd be great for this upcoming opener, on Monday night, new stadium. It's odd that he's vanished like a fart in the wind.
I was 6 or 7 and when that play happened. I remember sitting in upper deck and waiting for what seemed like eternity for him to get up. Of course I was young so I didn't understand head/neck injuries. I remember the drunk asshole behind me screaming "hurry up" or something along those lines. (He's the dude that wears the green wig and brings the Jets dog statue in section 301 row 19)
yea i was the same age, i remember my 2nd grade class made him a huge card and sang him a get well song, videotaped it and sent it to the hospital, his wife actually sent our class a thank you note back....i think it was his wife, mightve been his aunt mother or sister, i dont really remember, but it was a lady bc she sent a picture of her and dennis in the hospital and dennis was all hooked up the machines but gave the thumbs up in the photo, it was fucking awesome
My Dad went to church with him and went on a few retreats, he was a family friend. I had just turned 12 and when it happened we were a mess. I think it's cool that no one has worn or can wear #90 ever again. They should just retire it.
yea thats a good idea, to be honest though i dont even know what that is.....or we can officially retire his jersey, i know its an unwritten rule that no one wears it, but to officially retire it and have a picture of it in the new stadium would be special
I was at that game when Dennis get injury Byrd returned to the Meadowlands for the Jets' home opener on September 5, 1993, walking to midfield as an honorary captain for the coin toss. During a halftime ceremony, Jets president Steve Gutman presented him with a trophy for the Most Inspirational Player Award, which would thereafter be called the Dennis Byrd Award No Jet has worn #90 since Byrd; although it has not been formally retired, it is understood that no Jet will ever wear that number again.
